Paper Odyssey has this unmistakable student‑project warmth to it. The hand‑drawn aesthetic, the little personal touches like graffiti in the sewer level, and the quirky cutscenes all give the game a sense of personality that’s genuinely endearing. You can feel the developers having fun with their ideas, and that sincerity is one of the game’s strongest qualities. Unfortunately, the technical side of the experience doesn’t hold up nearly as well. One of the biggest issues is the complete lack of mouse support. You can’t move the camera, can’t adjust your view, and can’t interact with anything using the mouse at all. This becomes immediately noticeable in the opening parkour stage, where the camera frequently blinds you or points in unhelpful directions. The obstacles themselves are spaced so far apart that the level is still doable on the first attempt, but the experience feels clumsy purely because you’re fighting the camera rather than the platforming. The plane level takes these problems to another level entirely. Without camera control, it’s difficult to understand what’s happening from the start, and in my case the entire scene simply broke. The plane drifted out of the map, I fell underneath the level, and I continued falling through the void until the game abruptly decided I had “completed” the stage and moved me on to the boat section. It’s hard to judge the plane level visually or mechanically because I barely saw any of it before clipping out of bounds. The boat level, ironically, is both the most visually impressive and one of the most mechanically unstable. The water and the boat model look fantastic — easily the most promising art direction in the entire game. But the camera is extremely choppy, constantly clipping through walls due to the lack of collision bounds, and the boat physics are so sensitive that even the tiniest directional adjustment sends you flying. It’s a shame, because the visual potential is clearly there, but the technical execution makes the level far more chaotic than it needs to be. The music adds another layer of inconsistency. While the tracks themselves are funky and upbeat, they don’t match the tone or pacing of any of the levels. Combined with the fact that there’s no settings menu — meaning you can’t adjust the volume, resolution, fullscreen mode, or anything else — the audio ends up feeling disconnected from the rest of the experience. The game loads at whatever resolution it chooses, and if that resolution doesn’t suit your monitor, the visuals can become genuinely uncomfortable to look at. Some levels, like the sewer, look great; others, like the plane and ball stages, are harsh on the eyes. Despite all this, the cutscenes remain a highlight. They’re silly, charming, and full of personality, capturing the exact spirit the rest of the game is clearly aiming for. They reminded me of Sprout — that same quirky, hand‑drawn vibe that makes small indie projects feel personal and memorable. Overall, Paper Odyssey is a promising little game with a lot of heart. The creativity is there, the visual ideas are there, and the student‑project charm is undeniable. But the lack of basic settings, inconsistent art direction, broken camera, and unstable physics hold it back from being as enjoyable as it could be. It’s the kind of project you root for because you can see the talent behind it, even if the execution is uneven.
