About
Hey folks, Jason Rohrer here. After 8+ years of existence, the Discord server had devolved into a very unfriendly, negative, and drama-filled place. It had gotten to the point where I didn't even like stepping foot in there myself, and every time I did, I regretted it. I considered just closing it down entirely.
I recently took some very big steps toward cleaning it up, appointing a new outside moderator (a personal friend from real life who has a very level head), and banning anyone who was continuing to be unfriendly and negative (including some of the old moderators, some of whom who had become ringleaders of negativity and personal attacks).
Of course, the people who got banned are upset, and (surprise!) they are review bombing the game.
But it's pretty amazing: in just one day, the Discord server is already much more calm and friendly and positive. I'm sure game sales will be temporarily affected by this review bomb.... but... well... something had to be done.
Thank you for taking a look at One Hour One Life anyway, which is a deeply personal game that I sunk my heart and soul into.

Hey folks, I'm Jason Rohrer, and I spent more than 6 years making One Hour One Life. I did everything myself---I drew all the graphics on paper with pens and markers, I coded the entire engine from scratch, I composed and performed all of the music*, and I even made all of the sound effects. It's a very personal game, and it's really unlike anything else that's out there. It's also a huge game---over 4,400 fully interactive, craftable objects and over 2,400 hand-drawn sprites. The game was initially released on my own website in February of 2018 and then later that year on Steam. Over next few years, I released 154 weekly updates as I aimed for my goal of making the largest, most comprehensive crafting game in history.
Okay, so what about the game itself?
First of all, you only live for an hour, where each minute marks a passing year. You join the game server as a newborn baby, and some other randomly-chosen player is your mother. You depend on her for your survival. And why will she be willing to waste her valuable time and resources to keep you alive? Because she's going to die in an hour just like everyone else, and if she wants what she accomplishes in her lifetime to have any meaning, then the next generation (aka, you) is her only hope. And if you survive into adulthood, you may get the chance to have babies of your own---other players, just joining the server---and those babies will be the next generation that gives meaning to your own life accomplishments.
Across this ever-growing family tree of generations, players are collectively conducting an enormous project: they are rebuilding civilization from scratch. The online game world starts out as a near-infinite expanse of wilderness (four billion meters wide from east to west, and four billion meters wide from north to south, with a total surface area of over 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 square meters, or 36,000 times bigger than Earth). The very first player to join the server is Eve, and she starts out in the wilderness as the root of the family tree. Eve and her immediate offspring lay the foundation for the future civilization, perhaps making a few primitive tools, cooking basic foods, and starting a small farm as they scrape out a meager existence before dying. Future generations will build on this primitive foundation, eventually mastering more and more advanced technology, including domesticated animals, metal working, permanent buildings, engines, transportation networks, photography, electronics, and even interplanetary travel.
But as real-life history has shown, civilization is fragile. A generation that is born into the lap of luxury---on the backs of their ancestors' hard-won accomplishments---can just as easily squander their inheritance as build upon it. Key resources run out over time, so careful management, planning, and organization are necessary to prevent an inevitable collapse. Thus, the game graduates from the individual challenge of primitive survival in the early stages to a group organizational and leadership challenge in the later stages. How do rules and procedures for group survival propagate across multiple generations? What did our great grandparents have in mind for this village?
The main mode in the game involves being born as a helpless baby to another player as your mother, but you can also play with your friends as twins, triplets, or quadruplets. One baby is hard enough to take care of---any mother that can successfully take care of quadruplets deserves the eternal gratitude of you and your friends.
All of this is happening on my own centrally-managed, persistent servers, and your purchase includes a lifetime account on these official servers. After you buy the game, you can instantly connect to this world with no configuration or server set-up. It all just works. You also get access to the full source code, including the server code. Technically-minded folks can run their own private servers, or even use the powerful content editor to make their own mods.
And once you master interplanetary travel in the game, you will gain access to Another Hour Another Planet, which features an alien world where all game elements and artwork are made entirely by the community.
I hope you'll join us as this sprawling civilization-building experiment continues to unfold. Many tens of thousands of players have already collectively lived over 3.7 million hours in this endlessly-changing world so far. Over the life of the game, he average playtime for each player has been 22 hours, with over 1100 players logging over 500 hours each.
No two lives are ever the same, and a new story always awaits on the other side of the [GET REBORN] button.

Reviews
I quite enjoyed this game for awhile and have played it a lot. I would not recommend it to anyone. I have many of the same complaints as other people about the allowance of toxic and bigoted behavior in game, followed by Jason's endorsing of said behavior. However, I want to make something else clear. Jason is currently searching every avenue he can to silence any criticism against him and his game, and he claims that it and the discord he owns are separate entities, so none of these recent reviews are fair. I do not believe this to be an apt claim. Jason directs to the discord through the game itself, and it is the primary place to report bugs in the game, report players, and where he claims to seek community guidance for the game updates. In this way it is inseparable from the game itself--in fact many of the users in the discord joined it to receive assistance for the game. Jason himself clearly does not believe the discord (and therefore his behavior within it) to be inseparable, otherwise his most recent update would not be majority spent on his version of the recent debacle. Inside this discord people have been harassed and become the targets for deepfakes. Jason himself has made fake chats using ai of 2 female community members and a game moderator with sexual undertones. He claims it was not made with "malicious intent," but I argue intentions do not matter, he still made and propagated such images. He accuses people who made negative reviews of libel, which is a matter that can only be settled by a court. I say the natural conclusion to draw from that is that this is a man who has gained lots of money from his games threatening people who post criticisms he does not agree with. When players grew frustrated with his refusal to remove a name in game related to sexual violence, he released the first names of recent buyers to prove the fanbase is predominantly male and thus no one should really be upset by the name. He has joined unofficial, fan-made discord servers that ARE separate from his server to instigate and inflame users after banning them from his for criticisms of his behavior . He has stated his opinion that "It's been 85 years, so it's not exactly too soon, and Nazis and Hitler are pretty damn funny." It is important to note that all of these points I have levied against Jason were his response to members of the community explaining to him the griefing, bigotry, and harassment that has been occurring in game, and criticizing his refusal to moderate following these complaints. Oftentimes, it is the same people who are harassing players in-game that have moved to harassing them through his discord. My complaints said, I do not recommend this game. The developer cannot be trusted to protect his playerbase, their private information, and is often active and complicit in the bad behavior that runs rampant within the community.

Play 2HOL instead: https://twohoursonelife.com/, a free fork that still gets gameplay updates from a healthy community. It's generally much more polished, featureful and just fun and interesting. There's no longer a reason to touch OHOL as far as I, and many others, are concerned, as it's simply a worse version of 2HOL in way too many ways now. Other reviews have said this better than me, but One Hour One Life's developer has cultivated a community space that's awful, nay, *dangerous* to be in, with their refusal to moderate due to their beliefs of "free speech": this means banning moderators who kicked nazis, griefers, rape threat senders, doxxers, etc. As a developer they've also made many anti-player decisions over the years and have now basically abandoned the game. Lastly, it doesn't matter what your "political" stance is, the game is nigh unplayable with the griefers. I say this out of genuine love for the core game that was originally created by Jason and then taken over by a better community: Please, save yourself the trouble, leave OHOL to die and play 2HOL. Jason, you keep saying it was all a social experiment, but what exactly was the experiment? You saw the results of a lack of moderation years ago and it's only been getting worse. What now? (for the record, my time is inaccurate due to mods)
Congrats Jason, you just had to screw it all up. Rip to one of my favorite games.
play two hours one life instead
The developer refuses to moderate in game behavior leading to multiple griefer accounts making the game stressful and near unplayable. Not to mention the lack of moderation in the game's discord including the dev himself doxxing of the personal information of people who have bought the game. This game was once so fun and was beautiful and emotional to play but the dev will not take any accountability and is blaming others for problems he has created. He has tried to skirt accountability by making a note on the steam page saying the people making negative reviews are those who are banned from the discord but that is simply untrue. You can add this to the list of transgressions by Jason (the developer) I would not recommend this game currently. Although there were great memories here, the game has devolved into spending your life trying to undo the horrible deeds of a few select players who the dev refuses to ban over "free speech." Interpret as you will but I will say it is not good.
This game is full of nazi propaganda. It's full of sexual assault threats. It's full of pedophilic propaganda. If you care about any of that, don't play this game. The developer is part of all of it. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ass game, don't play.
Will no long be recommending this game, or supporting anything in the future from this dev.
The dev has completely lost the plot, is fine with griefing & antisemitism, and abuses their powers of ownership to literally track down players addresses and info. Such a sad way for what was once a decent game to be remembered.
Unfortunately the developer went down the wrong path and wants his community to participate in rape and racist genocide, it's pretty wild what a crazy downward turn this game took.
