Octopath Traveler is a pretty miserable RPG experience for me. The biggest problem is the writing. The gameplay is awful so the writing needs to carry, hard. The eight stories are so disconnected that they barely feel like they belong in the same game, and only two or three are even remotely interesting. It also constantly undermines its own characters by having them act against their established motivations just to accommodate whatever story you’re currently playing. A high priestess breaking into someone’s home because she’s involved in the thief’s story? Come on. The gameplay isn’t much better. The combat, classes, skills and character building all feel like ideas taken from the Bravely series, then stripped down and made far less interesting. Character builds and passive combinations should be one of the best parts of an RPG, but here they feel barely worth engaging with. When the story and characters aren’t working and the RPG mechanics aren’t giving me anything interesting to play with, there’s really not much left.
Super cool idea, horribly executed. Accuracy is a nightmare in this game. A ton of physical skills miss, which makes sense with multi-hit skills designed to stagger. But when you spend a turn lowering the enemies defense, buffing your Warrior, and then having them use a single hit Super only to miss twice in a row is not fun. Sharing equipment across eight characters isn't that bad resource wise, but actually exchanging and removing the armor is a nightmare. You cannot just unequip items from the equipment menu for party members not in the party. You need to go to a tavern, swap them into the party, and then remove the equipment. Same goes for Secondary Jobs. Your starting character is locked into the party until you finish their 4th chapter (20ish hours in casually). So if you wanted to level all eight characters and experience all eight stories at the same time with a similar balance of levels, it's horribly un-optimal. So you spend each half of the game with two different parties with no mixing or matching until you reach actual end game. Achievements are not hidden and are nonsensically detailed, so do not look at them until you've completed the game if you want to stay blind to the story. I did enjoy the game, but I also spent most of it annoyed. I've been informed that Octopath 2 is similar but with far more Quality of Life. The lore/story for both games are completely separate, so you can just skip this and try the second game.
Clasic 2.5 D game and very good
Man muss diesen Stil einfach mögen.
