Octopath has flaws. Its flaws make it a more successful love letter to the golden age of JRPGs. The eight disparate plots and protagonists often remain narratively disconnected from each other, and only really come together at the end. Still, when each protagonist has their moment, the bosses go larger than life, and the music kicks in, it will remind you of the era it’s emulating. The visuals are some of the best pixel art around. The combat is strategic. Most of all, however, Yasunori Nishiki burns the kitchen down with that sound track!
