Obludia is yet another of literally hundreds of lazy amateur 2D retro top-down shooter/brawlers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. Now, people have said this looks like a bad ripoff of Binding of Isaac and I respectfully disagree... BoI had procgen map layouts and a number of different themed rooms, a sense of progression and a bunch of other stuff to flesh out what was admittedly a seriously overrated 2D top down shooter game. This doesn't have any of those features, it's just a godawfully bad 2D retro brawler. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. The game cropped up a lot of negative reviews, which I suppose it does deserve (it's an awful game). But that kind of made me feel a bit sad for the "developer" behind this little train wreck, because honestly it's far from the worst GameMaker Studio shovelware drivel I've seen on Steam. I suppose it's because this launched back in 2014 so it predates a lot of the Greenlight and Steam Direct abuse that flooded Steam like a nasty asset flip tsunami and gamers just got so jaded they started ignoring indie games like this completely. And that's why asset flips are harmful. Even though genuinely made indie games like this are usually awful, they at least deserve a chance to be seen. But the sheer volume of asset flip pollution games on Steam have turned gamers away from the entire indie scene. So let's talk about this game and why it failed. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features simple, cartoony 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort mobile apps. 3D graphics programming does require a degree of skill and competence and unfortunately not all developers have the budget or talent to deliver this, despite 3D graphics cards hitting the mainstream in the 1990's. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. This looks a lot like it was designed for consoles, but released on Steam instead by mistake. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this never made it to the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", FobTi interactive has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Obludia didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for killing something, trivial to get, but less than 31 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Obludia is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.

Man kommt voran.
Obludia is an action-packed indie arena shooter developed and published by FobTi interactive that embraces the spirit of classic arcade gaming while incorporating light role-playing mechanics. At its core, the game is a fast-paced battle against relentless waves of monsters, challenging players to survive increasingly dangerous encounters inside a series of dungeon-like arenas. Rather than focusing on narrative depth or cinematic presentation, Obludia prioritizes skill-driven gameplay, making it an experience designed primarily for fans of old-school arcade action and score-based progression. The gameplay revolves around navigating fifty stages filled with hostile creatures, environmental hazards, and powerful bosses. Players must constantly move, dodge, and attack as enemies approach from every direction. The twin-stick shooter mechanics create a frantic pace that rarely slows down, demanding quick reactions and solid situational awareness. Every arena introduces fresh combinations of enemies, forcing players to adapt their tactics instead of relying on a single strategy. While the overall structure remains straightforward, the increasing difficulty keeps the experience engaging for those who enjoy testing their reflexes and endurance. A major strength of Obludia is the variety found in its combat systems. The game offers multiple weapons and magical abilities that can significantly alter the flow of battle. Some tools excel at clearing large crowds, while others are more useful against stronger foes and bosses. Collectible upgrades and character progression systems add an extra layer of motivation, rewarding players for their efforts with improved abilities and greater combat effectiveness. These RPG-inspired elements help distinguish the game from more traditional arcade shooters by providing a sense of long-term growth alongside the immediate thrill of survival. Boss battles serve as some of the game's most memorable moments. These encounters break up the standard arena progression and require players to learn attack patterns while managing limited space and constant pressure. Defeating these larger adversaries feels satisfying because victory is earned through skill rather than luck. The challenge level gradually escalates throughout the adventure, creating a rewarding sense of accomplishment for players who stick with the game until the end. Visually, Obludia adopts a colorful retro-inspired style that suits its arcade roots. The graphics may not compete with larger modern productions, but they effectively communicate enemy attacks, power-ups, and environmental dangers. The clean presentation helps maintain readability during chaotic battles where dozens of threats can occupy the screen simultaneously. Complementing the visuals is an energetic soundtrack that reinforces the game's fast pace and helps maintain tension during intense encounters. The inclusion of local cooperative play adds considerable value to the package. Playing alongside a friend transforms the experience into a more social and strategic adventure, allowing players to coordinate attacks and survive overwhelming enemy waves together. This feature extends the game's replayability and makes it particularly appealing for those who enjoy couch co-op experiences, a style of multiplayer that has become increasingly uncommon in modern gaming. Despite its strengths, Obludia is not without limitations. The arena-based structure can become repetitive over extended play sessions, especially for players who prefer exploration, story-driven content, or extensive character customization. The game's focus on arcade fundamentals means there is relatively little variety outside of combat. However, players who appreciate straightforward action and challenging gameplay are likely to find these shortcomings less significant than those seeking a broader or more ambitious experience. Overall, Obludia succeeds as a modern homage to classic arcade shooters. Its combination of frantic combat, character progression, weapon variety, and cooperative play creates an entertaining package that understands its audience well. While it may not revolutionize the genre, it delivers a satisfying and polished experience that captures the excitement of old-school arcade gaming while adding enough modern features to remain engaging. For fans of twin-stick shooters and challenging action games, Obludia offers a rewarding adventure that balances accessibility with skill-based gameplay. Rating: 5/10
