Reviews
I've known the dev since they released Pumpkin eater and i've been on this project for three whole years, helping them come up with ideas and giving them someone to bounce off of. It's honestly IN-EFFING-SANE seeing this game release. I am, so happy, i'm happier than happy and I just don't have words for it. This game is a story about growing, self improvement, and mental issues explored through a silly visual novel. It tackles serious topics without being insensitive and is overall a great story that I IMPLORE you to experience. You won't regret it.
Everyone is getting their medical license revoked as soon as possible. 10/10 game
A visual novel that has both excellent comedy and drama. The character stories will both hit you in the gut and make you laugh! Definitely would recommend!
Oh this game... Is nuts. A lovely, joyful bundle of nuts. I love it so. I even get all the references...! Seeing as they are right up my alley! ^-^ Also coincidentally... I am writing this review at "6.9 hours". This is epic! This game is a masterpiece in itself. Not only it was hilarious (especially for someone who isn't easily entertained by jokes), but it's also hella interesting and bizarre. AND it drew women with shapely bodies? Holy! Yes. I refuse to spoil anything. Story wise. I will say that: the artwork is really cute/fun and I couldn't stop laughing at some of the "Object Heads" CGs. I mean... Damn... XD Choices... There aren't that many. Thankfully. BUT! You wont always know which one will lead to a bad/good ending. Although I gotta say... These "bad endings" weren't painful or grizzly. So I was actually okay getting them, knowing that even if I failed... That it wasn't the end of things. Another kudos. OH! Yeah! Lewd scenes. There is an option to turn them off... But for this game it actually makes the story even better and you can see how Manson sees things... You will also miss out on some cuteness, however, I understand that it isn't for everyone. I did all four male routes. That was my interest, so... And I gotta say, all the characters were fantastic! I am a VN/Book reader... And this is the first time I just liked all the characters. Also, seeing as Manson sees "Object Heads"... And until you get the GOOD ending, you wont be able to see what the person's head actually looks like. So I was really surprised to find that IF you haven't unlocked a person's real image? They will have an invisible sprite at the end! BUT! If you did the Good ending route for that person? You can see them when and if Manson "breaks the spell"! That was a REALLY nice touch!!! Okay... I think I just like everything. These people... Felt like real people. With real problems. Humor/darkness/pain and all that and it was just more than worth it. While I am rarely interested in reading a female's route... I think I will more than do it for this one. It earned it and I am curious to see how crazy their stories/CGs are! Hah! *Update* I stayed up late and read through all the follow up routes... AH! THEY WERE INSANE! WHAT?! LIKE WHAT?! But... After all that craziness was over... There was a really good message. Especially if you get the "True End". And well... You are so right. :)... Thank you. Like really thank you. You did a fantastic job. You should be more than proud. *Super Awesome Stamp of Approval*
What initially drew me to this VN many years ago was the Object Head gimmick and how it provided a realistic in-world explanation for why it exists. After waiting patiently for its release and getting through all the routes, I can confidently say that it was worth the wait. This story rides the line of being comedic when it wants to be (no small part due to the wacky protagonist) but being absolutely serious when it needs to be. It treats the mental illnesses these characters have as seriously as you'd expect while still making sure to give you a good laugh when it's used for a joke. The humor can definitely be very crude at times, which I personally enjoy, though I can see how it could be too much for some people. But rest assured, it's very sparse and doesn't overstay its welcome when it arrives. All in all, this is a well-craft visual novel experience that takes full advantage of its premise while still being a well-written experience, and I cannot recommend it enough.
As someone with mental health problems, including psychoses, this game was a refreshing look at something that is rarely depicted with any nuance. That's not to say that it's always entirely realistic, but that's part of why I like it- it treats its characters' issues as something we can laugh at without (often) trivializing the dangerous reality of what living with severe psychiatric problems is like. The humor is dark, but it comes from a place of empathy and experience with the subject matter, even if the jokes don't always land. I'd recommend this to anyone willing to try something new and a little strange. And for the record, Randal is my favorite. There's nothing I love more than a train wreck of an old man.
Okay, so. I rarely ever write reviews, especially serious ones, but for this one I want to make a good exception (love Randal, my fav) First of all - characters. Every character is interesting and you genuinely wanna know more about them, their past and experiences. A little confession : I rarely play visual novels for dialogue nowadays, mostly for funsies and some scenes, ifykyk, but this one made me go “oh, hold the horses brother, what the heck is wrong with these guys here?!”. And oh boy, is everyone interesting in their own way! Second of all - plot. Spoilers for the game! Stop if you haven’t played it or don’t want spoilers —————- . . . . . The plot revolves around our main character - Manson, bi (with preference towards men) man. The guy is mentally ill and a ‘what is wrong with you’ weird kind of dude, getting into all kind of shenanigans and everything. Seeing people with objects instead of their heads would make anyone go a bit insane, to be honest. What is really interesting though - is his development and how he changes throughout the game in some endings. Another interesting thing - doctors, inmates and everything in between. Everyone here has their own story, some you need to read between the lines to get, some are explored through different endings. So, back to the plot. After finishing some of the endings (it’s either a few or all available, or maybe even one) at the end screen you hear a voice telling you it was a mistake and she wishes things could’ve gone differently. What is happening..? You reload to the start, and-..what? There was never a pillow-head character, was there..? are we really a psycho? Was she ever real? Why do we hear her in the ‘true’ (friendship) ending? Third of all - topics and growth. Manson, oh my sweet Manson. The game covers really heavy topics without being overbearing with them, but giving really good representation of them. As a mentally ill person myself, struggling with health and control, with bad habits and getting out of the cycle - it was really sweet to see how characters open up and change. Overall - great visual novel, good CGI, had a laugh here and there, sympathized with most of the characters and the dialogue is very nice. Would recommend, 11/10 (+1 for my bbygirl Randal)
When you think the words "What the hell" when looking at a game, normally this means the game is bad. Normally you question why the devs would release something so bizarre. Yet while this game has had me asking "why" numerous times as I played through it, I believe this sanity shattering story somehow made this a good thing. I really enjoyed the music, the comedy, and the characters. It's almost like the story is sentient and knows that it makes no sense whatsoever and rolls with it. As a counselor, I think I can now empathize with clients who may struggle with paranoid schizophrenia just like the main character, because I'm questioning reality as I type up this review. Am I even hear? Did I spend $20 on something that'd break my bearings? No, this must be a dream...
Only two endings deep, but I can already tell this is criminally underrated on here. I'll update my review once I've actually finished the game. I think this one deserves more buzz while the steam sale is going, and I hope adding another positive review helps with that. Gameplay tip: you can go back in the dialogue with the scroll wheel. Missed some stuff early on because i clicked too fast and didnt realize that.
The game is impressive for the scale of the dev team, it has engaging characters, and while the writing can feel rushed sometimes, it's still a genuinely exciting experience. I look forward to experiencing the rest of the game. Also you can die in the game, but I won't say how cause that's a spoiler. Best game death ever.
