Nomad Defender is a roguelike tower defense game with deckbuilding involved. Despite its looks, there is a lot to like about the game. The game is pretty easy to get into. You have nodes on a map (upgrades, enemies, etc.) and choose your way to the boss. Every run starts with one of four decks. Your cards are towers that you need to place in battles. You can upgrade and enhance your cards (towers) throughout a run in several ways (Changing the projectile, giving bonuses such as +60% damage, giving ability, and more). You can level up a card up to level 3. Having higher-level cards can be upgraded more within a battle. Every few nodes you will need to fight in a battle. The map can have several lanes (mostly one or two), which you need to defend. It's possible to lose one lane but survive the battle by defending the other one. This will result in you being forced away on the map. Back to the battle: Every few seconds you will generate a resource used for playing cards and upgrading towers. Survive for X waves to win the battle. Upgrading a tower will give better stats but you can't upgrade a card more than their card level is.
Pros
- thanks to the different ways of upgrading/enhancing your cards, the game can get tactical depth - harder difficulty after beating the game - it's addictive thanks to it being a fast-paced (if you speed it up) roguelike - I feel like the balance is in a pretty good place right now - very atmospheric thanks to the main menu and the little story there is
Cons
- missing words in the UI/description - has a few bugs and crashes sometimes, which is especially bad considering you can't save during a run - little meta-progression (from what I can tell)
Conclusion
Nomad Defender is addictive and exactly what I searched for: a roguelike, deckbuilding tower defense game with a map and nodes to choose your path to the end. It's a bit niche but if you're into that: Get the game. But even if you're just into the deckbuilding or the tower defense genre, this is definitely worth a look. Considering the asking price, I definitely recommend Nomad Defender! Mechanines Tower Defense is a roguelite tower defense game. This game is a lot of fun, cool idea. Decent story and interesting gameplay.
Look... i support indie devs and their projects. No difference here. I can see that the game had thought and design behind it. Its nothing monumental, but still its not soulless. You can see the care behind it. With that being said however... im sorry, but this is a tech demo. A school project. The entire game is one single map long to the point it feels like a scam. I cleared the tutorial, entered first map and when i completed it, the credits screen greeted me. I spent less than 60 minutes clearing the entire game just to be told to now try hard mode which is a slightly longer map, and then i assume there is going to be an even higher difficulty with an even longer map. Maybe there is some length to later maps, maybe it offers a lengthier gameplay, but i cannot help to voice my surprise and disapproval at meeting the credits screen after what should have been level 1. Had it been some 2 euro game, i'd cut it some slack, but its almost 10. Sorry. No. Good game. Lots of potential. Completely ruined by length. Its like getting to taste something delicious you can never actually eat from. Absolutely not recommended.
Tower defense game with a starting deck and 4 decks to try. Player chooses which areas to visit including upgrades or copying a turret. If you lose on the the end node, you are not able to visit that level or upgrade. Each turret has a level for each turret and each turret has 2 upgrade limit. 👍
Pros:
- Simple game play and steadily gets more difficult with more nodes/lanes to defend. - Clean and intuitive menus/screens. When visiting upgrade nodes, I understand the changes or upgrades I can choose from. 👎
Cons:
- Low replay value with only 3 difficulties. 🚩
Suggestions:
- Give 2-3 seconds pause for each new wave so player can plan and place the turret. - Add collection section for enemy units encountered. - In tutorial, explain which towers are effective against specific enemies. There is a mention of armored and unarmored units, but I don't know which kind of enemies appears on harder waves. - Add leader board for top scores with each deck. - Add endless mode for more fun and challenge besides hard mode.
- Change boss level where they can disable your turrets during wave. That was annoying to fight against and the level was hard hard enough.
[b] Conclusion: Overall, a good tower defense game that is simple to understand. Adding more decks or an endless mode would improve the replay value. For players that want to unlock achievements, you will get at least 5-10 hours of enjoyment.
Positive with caveats (read on): I'm at about 12 hours of play at time of writing, and I'd say I've certainly got my money's worth of entertainment at the asking price. What's here is solidly executed and enjoyable, and the game offers a fun aesthetic with some interesting twists on the TD concept. That said, I've reached a point where success in the final levels on the Hard difficulty no longer feels dependent on me learning more about the game / improving my skill, so much as on whether I happened to find the right combination of upgrades along the way. I'm certain that's not entirely true, but there isn't enough variety in enemies / levels / upgrades / towers to justify another dozen attempts from me. With a sense there's nothing new left to find, but having enjoyed the time I've spent, I'm content to close the book on Nomad Defender.
It's clear that the game stands on its own aesthetic and gameplay compared to, say, Plants Vs Zombies. And as a seasoned player of such, I value the effort put into creativity and refreshing take on the tower defence genre. As well as the deckbuilding aspect of which incentives me to start a new run and see what pops up. All in all, a pretty favourable experience for the tower defence enjoyers.
A VERY fun rogue-like tower defense game, I had been looking for a game like this for a long time and few have hooked me so much in this genre.
This is a really sweet genre mix, it takes parts from Deckbuilder and Roguelike games and brings them to the juicy tower defense genre. Also the neon aesthetic is amazingly used and makes me not get tired of the loops!
