YOU'RE MAKING ME SPARK! OOOOGOGGGHGHGHHGH!
No More Furries is a silly round based survival shooter that knows exactly what kind of game it wants to be. I am dropped into a world that has been overrun by werewolves and my job is basically to survive as many waves as I can while finding better weapons and upgrades. The name is obviously meant to be ridiculous, and the game leans into that with crude humour, cartoonish violence and a comic book style. Underneath the joke there is a fairly straightforward first person survival shooter, and I think the simplicity works pretty well. The combat is the main reason I would keep coming back. I can explore the map, find different guns and use them to deal with increasingly dangerous waves of werewolves. There are also upgrades that let me improve weapons or give my character different effects, so I have to make some decisions about how I want to build my run. I like that the enemies get stronger as the waves continue because it gives me a clear reason to keep improving my equipment rather than simply relying on the starting weapons. The maps are probably where I see the most potential. The game launched into Early Access with three maps planned for the initial version, and the developer has said the goal is to expand that to around seven to ten maps over development. Each map is supposed to have its own atmosphere and secrets, which gives me something to look around for instead of treating the environment as nothing more than a shooting arena. I like the idea, although the current amount of content still makes the game feel more like the foundation of something bigger than a finished survival shooter. The biggest problem for me is exactly that Early Access feeling. There are only a few maps at this stage, and while the basic combat and systems are already in place, there is not enough variety for me to ignore the repetition. Once I understand the main loop, I am mostly surviving waves, buying or finding weapons and trying to last longer. That is enjoyable for a while, but I would want more maps, weapons, enemy variety and situations before I could see myself playing it for a really long time. The developer is planning regular additions, but I can only judge what is actually here now. I also think the presentation is going to be a big part of whether I enjoy it. The low poly characters, comic style and deliberately stupid humour give it a lot more personality than a completely serious werewolf shooter would have. I like the fact that it does not take itself too seriously, and the idea of blasting cartoon werewolves with different weapons fits that tone. At the same time, the joke can wear thin if the gameplay does not keep expanding, because there is only so much mileage I can get from the title and the basic premise alone. The free to play model helps a lot for me. I can try the game without having to pay anything, and the current focus is clearly on building up the combat, maps and weapons over time. Since the game is still in Early Access, I think it is important to judge it as a work in progress rather than expecting the amount of content I would get from a finished shooter. There is a decent base here, but I would like to see the planned maps and content arrive before deciding whether the game has enough long term variety. Overall, No More Furries is a fun but fairly limited survival shooter that gets most of its personality from its ridiculous setting and comic presentation. I like the simple gunplay, wave system, weapon upgrades and the idea of searching through the maps for secrets while trying to survive. The limited content and repetitive structure hold it back for me right now, but the foundation is solid enough that I can see the game becoming much better as more maps and weapons are added. At its current stage I think it is worth trying if I want a cheap and silly wave shooter, but I would not rate it as highly as a more complete survival game. Rating: 7.5/10
