This is a very cute and fun indie kart racer. I like to play a lot of these and this one has a really neat gimmick with the water/land speeds. When you touch water, you get a bit of a speed boost. This makes it really fun to try and navigate to the many different bodies of water whether through solid racing lines or clever gadget usage. If anything, I think that the speed difference should be even greater, further emphasizing strategic play. Speaking of the gadgets, I think this is a really solid suite. I love the abundance of speed and traversal gadgets as they pair really well with the swimming mechanics. Trying to chain rockets and propellors together in a way that makes me spend the least amount of time on land as possible is a blast, and allows for some neat optimization. Not to mention the fact that you can see every available gadget as you approach, as opposed to most kart racers where your item is randomly generated based on placement. Here there's a lot of strategy as to which item you go for and I can imagine as I learn the tracks better, choosing specific items for specific sections will be a lot of fun. The overall aesthetic with the turtle theming was also cute and charming (I especially loved the news crawl on the title screen. I was laughing for quite a while at those). I do think a few of the courses, especially the first few, could do for a bit more visual variety, but I understand there's only so much you can do with the theming. A few minor nitpicks, because the courses are so open, I did encounter a few oddities, like when I tried to take a shortcut using the rocket item, but in the process missed a key checkpoint, but didn't notice until I finished the lap. I also noticed a few times when the CPU turtles would occasionally get stuck on things, but there wasn't anything that I felt would hamper my enjoyment of the game. All in all, this is a charming little game that I can easily see myself keeping loaded onto my Steam Deck for a few fun rounds before bed or other such occasions. There are even a few things that I haven't gotten a chance to check out yet, and I'm excited to give them a try. For what appears to be a solo dev project as far as I can tell, I'm very impressed. It's leagues better than anything I could make. This game is well worth the couple dollars I spent on it, and I look forward to seeing where this dev goes next!
Chaotically fun and thematic. Play with friends or play speedrun mode, either way its an enjoyable time!
Better than Garfield Kart.
If you’re looking for a simple, fast-paced, and fun multiplayer racing game to enjoy with friends, Nitro Turtle is a solid pick!
Great game, had some bugs, but not major ones, and they are being fixed. Update:just got back into the game, it seems like the bugs are fixed, and over all, really fun game to play when I've got friends and family over and need a game for a tournament.
Nitro Turtles had the potential to be the greatest, bestest, most awesomest game ever. It’s a racing game, only the cars are turtles. nitro enhanced, super powered sea turtles. ...yeah, that’s the whole reason why I thought it looked awesome. What can I tell ya; I’m a simple man, and simple men love turtles. BUT, after about two hours of play, beating every track, and getting roughly half the achievements
(with the other half mainly being the time trial stuff. I ain’t got time for that)
I did find a lot of cracks, some of which are surprisingly very apparent. I still recommend this to any and all turtle lovers on Steam, but there are a few asterisks. But hey!! super powered sea turtles!!! Wickedly epic!! To describe it in a sentence, Nitro Turtles is basically another Mario Kart clone. ...I mean, seriously now; what else did you think it’d be? All the pages of the playbook are in plain sight: colorful cartoon graphics, several themed tracks to pick from, eight competitors for each race, goofy powerups placed around the track, it’s all there, it’s all been done, and I don’t need to go on. It is, however, done pretty well, and for the most part I was having a lot of fun! With plenty of boost pads and clever short cuts (not to mention the impeccable frame-rate), you really do feel a thrilling sense of speed. Considering you’re racing turtles, you’ll move much faster and smoother in the water, which adds a little bit of strategy to the mix. Not a whole lot, but it’s still nice. While most of the items are what you’d expect
(seaweed is just mushrooms, seagulls are just green shells, all that good jazz)
I did like a couple of them a lot. The bubble allows you to have underwater effects even while on dry land for a period of time, and the jetpack straight up allows you to skip entire sections of the track
(within the limits of the invisible walls, of course).
Again, pretty creative, and good fun! Unfortunately, this Mario Kart clone also happened to copy Mario Kart’s worst problems. The opponent Al is brutal, with the rubber-banding problem at full force. You could be playing a perfect race, seemingly miles ahead, and for no explicable reason the CPUs will still catch up to you, and be just so smugly casual about it. look at that turtle’s punchable smirk. what a chump. Oftentimes you’ll get “Mario Karted”, as my bros call it, where you just get absolutely pummeled by CPU items, where it feels like you can’t even move for like twenty seconds straight.
If that hasn’t happened to you yet, then maybe try actually opening the game, bubby.
Despite the stuff I just said, the enemy Al remains kinda stupid; with at least two racers getting stuck inside a rock each race
(guess the CPUs forgot how to drive backwards…?).
You can only go to the next lap if you go through the finish line, so if you drive on the side or (more likely) fly over it, then it won’t count. I had to learn that the hard way. And finally the biggest and most surprising problem, pausing the game doesn’t actually pause the game. Everyone is still driving even with the menu on screen. I lost a race because I swatted a mosquito. literally unplayable. Now that I brought it up, though, it’s probably an easy fix. This might be an odd comparison, but Nitro Turtles’ production values kind of feels like eating decent fast food. It’s great at the moment, and it’s certainly nothing bad, but after everything’s all done and the fun is over, you start to think yeah… that probably could’ve been better.
(no offense, City Wings. you make a respectable chicken sandwich).
Most obvious issue is that there really isn’t a whole lot on offer. Nitro Turtles only has nine tracks. They look pretty nice at first glance (and first drive); very bright and colorful, clean sand and rock textures, and some really satisfying water effects. Sure, the graphic quality of it all is comparable to something like Face Racers for 3DS
(which, to be fair, looked pretty slick in 2011)
but it’s made by just one guy, and he did a good job. Unfortunately, the longer you play, the more you notice that everything looks… a bit samey. See, a good racing game tends to have at least one track that stands out from the others, one that makes you suddenly stop one day and think “oh hey! that was pretty neat!” , but this game doesn’t have that. Nitro Turtles doesn’t have its own Coconut Mall, or Music Park, or even Quakeville
(the track from Face Racers where you drive through a town that recently suffered an earthquake and jump down into a crevice and it’s actually pretty inspired).
It just has… well, beaches. and rocks. with an occasional tropical island. Every single track fits into at least one of those categories; with no unique landmarks to call their own. The tracks also never seem to escalate in difficulty, sorta excluding the final one. The first stage, Nitro Turtles Circuit, feels no harder than the second to last stage, Ancient Turtle Ruins.
In fact, Nitro Turtles Circuit is actually significantly longer than that one.
However, the big finisher, Scorched Shell Volcano, is pretty cool. It does the whole Wuhu Island thing and replaces laps with just persevering through a long course. Nothing amazing, but a decent finale. But we’re all just ignoring the real star of the show because now it’s time to talk about the TURTLES. TURTLES ARE AMAZING. And these guys look pretty great! The turtle model itself is adorable, and I love the contrast between the waddling helplessly on the beach to the swimming animation. And whenever you win a race, your turtle does a little dance on the podium! Look at that big smile!! A winner truly is you!! You can also customize your turtle friend with things like sunglasses and pirate wear and stuff, which is always fun. And the “turtle facts” on the title screen are hilarious. “Recent Scientific Studies Show that Turtles are Actually The Fastest Animal. Just Trust Us, Bro”; seems airtight to me! The sound department could be a bit better. It’s fine how it is, but as is, it just feels generic. Stock sound effects, completely absent voice work of any kind
(even Face Racers had characters say “Woooo hoo!” once in a while)
and a lot of stuff you’d assume would make noise just being completely silent. The music, on the other hand, is straight fire.
Epic Turtle Dubstep Dance Beats To Study To.
So, no surprises, the best part is the turtles; but everything here is at least competent, even if nothing particularly stands out above the pack. Still, at least it’s better than Racing with Ryan amirite guys??? ...sorry. it’s just that I’m obligated to say that every time I review any car or racing related media.
Made for an awkward Christine review.
Am I recommending this game just because of the turtles?? . . . . .yessssss. But taking that aside, I still had a lot of fun with Nitro Turtles. It’s a cool, fast paced, pretty well made little kart racing game that just so happens to prominently feature my favorite animal. What more could I ever ask for??
Good racing game, singleplayer progress is mostly just getting the achievements so it's really a multiplayer and speedrunning game. Speedrun leaderboards aren't that competitive yet so you can easily get good times.
Nitro Turtles is a very exciting, pretty, and fun racing experience. It is very cool because you race with turtles and realistically turtles don't go very fast so that is very creative. The soundtrack is good and I love all the Nitro Turtle skin choices (especially the wizard turtle, whoever thought of that is a creative genius). This game was worth all the money I spent (steam key) and I would definitely receive a steam key for this game again.
Very fun game, I like when the turtles go fast
