Reviewed specifically as a co-op experience. Me and a friend burned through It Takes Two, bounced off Split Fiction because it was too easy, and went looking for something with actual teeth. Nioh 3 has teeth. If you're coming here looking for Dark Souls or Elden Ring difficulty but with two people: manage your expectations. Co-op is easier. More enemies, more HP on bosses, but you're always able to gang up on everything together and that tips the scales. From other reviews the difficulty curve is expected to keep climbing significantly, so it probably won't stay easy forever. But don't expect solo-difficulty challenge with a friend alongside you. That's just the nature of two people coordinating on content tuned for one. That said, it's an absolute blast doing it together. The co-op implementation itself is one of the best I've experienced in any game, let alone a soulslike. Progression saves to your own profile, so you can play solo for a bit, hop on with your friend later, and everything carries over. Chests you opened stay opened for you. If you've overleveled you can actually manually drop excess Amrita into your personal stash and dial your level back down to match your friend before joining. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare. I main Ninja, he mains Samurai. The two class systems are different enough that we genuinely complement each other rather than stepping on each other's toes. There's actual build theory to sink into between sessions, and the depth of the systems keeps growing the further you go. After 50 hours we're still in the first real era. There's a full NG+ mode and two DLC expansions coming. For two people looking for a co-op game that respects your intelligence and rewards coordination, this is the one right now. Recommended.
Liked the first game,m loved the second, unfortunately this feels off. I would recommend Nioh 2, but not this.
Legendary. I love the fact that the game starts with an easy mode and only after 100+ hours of grinding through the main story, getting destroyed, slammed, laughed at, it acknowledges you and allows you to unlock a normal mode. I would expect nothing less. I salute you Team Ninja.
Well... It seems like a good game, from what I've been able to play, but oh boy - people weren't joking about the performance issues. AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 64GB DDR5 And yet this game locks up or stutters more than anything else I've come across. I'd just avoid, sadly. Waste of money on my part, and certainly won't be trusting Team Ninja for a good while again.
Based on v1.0.6 (2026 jun). The PC port is nearly unplayable on a computer which can run Crimson Desert on Ultra. In Nioh 3 a lot of visual settings are Off or on Low and there are still unexpected under 30 FPS areas. Add to that that the game would not look nearly as good as Crimson Desert even on maximum visual settings, this game looks average at best. If I add a few mods to Skyrim, it looks way better than this game. Clearly, the engine coders and environment artists were either sub par or wasn't given the time to do a proper job. It is horrendously unoptimized. So my negative vote is based on the game performance, not the content.
Don't buy the PC port. Just don't. Flat out don't buy the PC port. In the simplest words - the performance is beyond dogsh** and the game performs worse than modern UE5 titles, however unlike modern UE5 titles the graphics look like dog water and PS3 era. Team Ninja needs to retire the Katana engine or completely modernize it because it shouldn't be this bad and ugly. Now the game itself. Nioh 2 has the best action combat of any ARPG ever fullstop, and while I dropped Nioh 1 (because i played 2 first) I still had a decent time with it. Nioh 3? Nioh 3 is genuinely just a giga-lite version of Nioh 2 but slopified into an open world (OH MY GOD GUYS THEY ARE SO INNOVATIVE!!! INSTEAD OF THE BORING LEVEL SYSTEM WE HAVE A BORING OPEN WORLD SYSTEM!!!) The combat, while Lite, is still fun. While I'm not a fan of the Ninja/Samurai build splits I do kinda see their vision. Really the game is still just Nioh at its core. Its just pathetic that they decided to go for the open world approach - the reason why i dropped Rise of the Ronin as well. It's just so, so, so boring and repetitive. It's 2026 man. Why didn't they just use the modern Souls approach? The story is - imma be frank i skipped cutscenes after 10 hours because there isn't a single Souls game with an interesting story besides Bloodborne and maybe Lies of P but i started skipping cutscenes last year when it comes to Souls games because cmon man you don't play them for the story. I remember when I played Steelrising and just didnt give a sh** I mean there's really not much I can say about this game since I decided to drop it after the Hiruko fight. Atleast for the time being. This performance was so bad that I should have dropped the game 30 hours ago BUT I OPTED AGAINST IT because of sunk cost fallacy and because, well, i figured it might get better. The funny thing is i even waited a few months after release because I know Team Ninja and their PC ports. However, as you can see, that did not help LMFAO. The game as a game is very by the books and a safe sequel, well, Ghost of Yotei is a "safe sequel" this is a "barebones sequel", all it does "differently" is just being Open world for the Kyle's that play games every weekend after football practice. I think you should just play Nioh 2 instead and if you TRULY want to play this game for the love of god play it on console. Also prepare yourself for probably the worst boss roster of the entire Team Ninja catalogue. 6/10 it really pains me, the game would be 7.5 if the performance wasn't this bad and if it didnt impact my enjoyment. Again, it's 2026 Team Ninja. INNOVATE. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, INNOVATE. Since it took them this long to make an open world game, IS IT TIME FOR A BATTLE ROYALE?!?!? /s
Game would be good if not for the performance issues I have had. If I hadn't gotten this game for free, I would have refunded it due to performance issues. For reference, I ran Nioh 2 at a stable 120fps years ago with a 1660 TI and a much worse CPU. I struggle to hit a stable 60fps with no framegen in this title with frequent drops below 30 despite a whole new rig. I've now uninstalled. Nioh 3 presents no graphical upgrades with no performance patches in the many months it has been out. It is an utter CPU hog and there's been no word from the devs on any upcoming optimization. If you have a setup similar to mine, or even a little better, do yourself a favor and buy some other hundred dollar title.
