I CRY SO HARD. Great writing, great characters (even Marion who i kind of hated at first) 写的非常动人的一个故事,当然作为一款cog游戏来说的缺陷也很明显,自由度太低了,作为主角来说感觉特别揪心无奈。you don't really have a choice in most of the scenarios.
indulging my middle school fantasies of being a brilliant scientist/engineer and being a literal ride or die for nikola tesla. died in his arms confessing undying love while we gave light to the whole world. crying about it!!
I didn't expect to get so hooked on this game and at the same time learn a little history.
For a single moment in history, there was the conviction that science could electrify the world in one perfect harmony. That is the beauty of the period known as the War of the Currents, one that had both plenty of ramifications in the collective conscience and not the popularity that you would think. So little is taught about it in schools (I can speak about the Italian side of things, at the very least), in fact, that this videogame has often the cadence of edutainment, and I mean that in the best possible way. Rich with historical facts, precise with its contextualisation, passionate about bringing to life the characters as well as their mentality: War of the Currents is a project born out of passion, you can tell as much as soon as you read its vibrant descriptions. However, you could be easily tricked (I certainly was) into thinking that this premise would make for a pretty railroaded experience. After all, there is always a certain risk that comes with rewriting history and the fates of the characters in it, the kind of risk which an historian seldom takes. That’s why WotC isn’t made by an historian, but by a physicist-turned-writer, videogame writer to be specific. There is a clear sense of progression, branching paths, a story that goes places and finds meaning in the struggle for progress, in all its various forms. The story I forged through my decisions was one of struggle for equality that saw science as a means to reach an almost utopian state of it, before the forces of capitalism and bigotry beat us down into obscurity, but it’s much more the result of my choices than the imprinting the game naturally leaves on its players. In actuality, this game hides stories of romance, aliens, weapons of mass destruction, counter-espionage, poetry, betrayal, business-making... the fact that it gives off the impression of being railroaded even when the possibilities are so varied is the best compliment I can give. This revelation came to me as soon as I finished my run and talked about it with a friend who also reached the same ending: our two runs differed not only in the choices we made, but also in the choices we were presented based on the choices we made previously. Point being, it’s natural to stop for a moment by the halfway point and wonder “Couldn’t have this been a book?”. Well, on the one side, being a videogame implicates a number of necessary artificialities: for example, the way the game needs to leap over the timeline of events because it has to focus on specific events that let you choose the way forward, or the way it also needs to sideline Tesla’s own independence of thought because he’s just an NPC of his own story. On the other, it adds a great amount of intrigue precisely because not everything is shed light upon: each run can savour a new flavour you didn’t get before, a different glimpse into the lives of these beloved men and women. It captures the ideal of historical opportunity because you are the protagonist, your decisions hold weight, they matter to you and the people around you. WotC caresses the face of a genius that suffered greatly in life and longs for a connection that transcends time, as today, just like yesterday, goulish capitalists use his reputation and work to their own benefit. 83 years have passed from Tesla’s death and I can write this review here, make it so that it could be immediately read by someone on the other side of the globe, in no short part because of his visions, his way of worshipping God. A man of his times, but a story of abuse that keeps repeating itself, even to those who narrate it. If we claim to love Tesla, then we first need to learn the right lessons from his experience, and this game seems like a good place to start.
Enamoured by Tesla, excellent aroace representation. The characterisation is wonderful, I have an attachment to Samuel Clemens and his avuncular vibe. 10/10 would join his bookclub
Power to the people in more ways than one. This was a great game. Really well written. Emotional, fun, and impactful. You really get a sense your choices matter in almost every regard. Plus it's a great length. Loved it. 9/10
One of the best COG games I ever played. The ROs are all unique and while the story itself, as is already noted in another review, doesnt really change according to your choices, you really need to just min max and thats it (personality is a bit different, its so damn easy becoming an Idealist), but the flavour text it provides? Its so well written! The writing is beautiful, its a work of art. It made me cry. Only thing I disliked: the Ahnenerbe (doesnt exist until 1935), Nazis (also dont exist yet... at least the name, racist antisemits sadly does exist) and I wish there was some sort of epilogue. Especially if MC and RO choose to have kids and Tesla is the godfather... or if we go to space with Tesla.
Recomendadísimo. Podes ayudar a los sindicalistas estadounidenses de inicios del 1900s y contactar con extraterrestres. ¿Que mas se puede pedir? Aparte Tesla es recontra cute
Great writing, amazing style but protagonist feels mostly weak and sometimes useless. I've also encountered several bugs. Lovely reading from someone who's clearly passionate nonetheless. And thank you for the option to stay away from politics.
