for 49 cents its good game
I went into this expecting a cheap thirty-minute scare and a few laughs with friends over a Let's Play. What I got instead was one of the most viscerally unsettling, and weirdly one of the most personally meaningful, horror experiences I've had in years. If you've spent any time around the Backrooms phenomenon online, you already know the pitch: you wake up somewhere you shouldn't be, the walls are the wrong shade of yellow, the lights buzz in a way that feels almost alive, and something out there is looking for you. This game translates that concept into a first-person nightmare that never lets you feel safe, not even for a second. The graphics and sound design are what sell it. The environments have this grimy, water-stained, fluorescent-lit realism that makes every hallway feel like a photograph someone took right before they disappeared. There's no music cueing you in on when to be scared, just the hum of the lights, some distant thud of something moving through the walls, and then, without warning, footsteps that are suddenly much too close. Plenty of horror games lean on jump scares to do all the work. This one earns its scares by making the quiet moments unbearable first. What actually got to me, though, was how defenseless you are. There's no weapon, no flashlight with infinite battery, no convenient hiding spot that always works. Across the eight levels, each with its own layout and its own breed of nextbot hunting you, your only real tool is your ability to keep moving and think clearly under pressure. That sounds like a small design choice, but it changes the entire emotional register of the game. You're not a hero clearing a level. You're a person trying to survive somewhere you were never supposed to be, and the game never lets you forget it. That helplessness is where the meaning snuck up on me. The Backrooms as a concept taps into something a lot of people quietly carry around: the fear of being lost, of ending up somewhere familiar-but-wrong with no one coming to help. Playing through this, level after level, and actually making it out the other side ended up feeling like a strange kind of practice in staying calm when everything in you wants to panic. I won't pretend a horror game fixed my anxiety, but sitting with that specific dread on my own terms, in a space I could step away from whenever I needed to, left me handling unfamiliar real-life situations with a little more steadiness afterward. For some people, I genuinely think this game could shift how they relate to fear itself, which is a rare thing for something built around chase sequences and yellow wallpaper. If you want a horror game that's all filler and no substance, this isn't it, and if you want one that respects your intelligence enough to scare you with atmosphere instead of gimmicks, this absolutely is. It's short, it's cheap, and it is brutally effective in a way that stuck with me long after I closed it. Fully recommended. Just maybe don't play it with the lights off unless you're ready for what that decision costs you. Sorry for the AI, This game is actually not that bad. Yeah you will only play this game once in your life but its a good 30 minute game play. I could not figure out how to beat the first level but pressing The END in the menu I was able to beat it and it was pretty fun. Especially for 50 cents this game is a 8/10, Just PLEASE turn down the camera shake when sprinting. Also the NEXTBOTS just sound like they are moaning in your ear when running away from then.
