This is probably the best language learning game on steam. As someone learning spanish, I've tried literally every single language learning game on steam to get some immersion and content. While other games focus on vocab, this game focuses on actually interacting with NPCs and solving problems. The ability to communicate with any words you know, while having an excellent in game translator is huge. This is the best game I've come across for comprehensive input, while not being overwhelming and providing in game resources to learn and apply new words. I only played with the intermediate DLC, which seems almost mandatory to get the required language learning results. Is there loads of AI scripts and Voice? Yes, but the people frustrated miss the value. its set up so you can say ANYTHING and have people react. You can't learn a language through pre selected prompts and pre recorded dialouge responses. Your brain needs to develop sentences and ideas constantly and AI voices let you express yourself in your target language. Overall very impressed. Bought this on sale and its worth every dollar.
Dear developers, Brazil is one of the countries with the highest number of people interested in learning a new language. Therefore, it is essential to consider including Brazilian Portuguese as one of the native language options in your game.
allright so a quick first impressions review, I booted it up tonight and as of right now put in 2 1/2 hours thus far I have primarily been using Clozemaster and watching stuff in spanish as my primary way to study as far as a learning game, its great, it does a fantastic job of giving you as much help as you need to understand the dialogue each character presents, the combat system so far is fun and a few times I found myself wondering around an area with respawning enemies to get a few more battles in for the extra practice just because I like drilling information the only thing in regards to that I might add would be the possibility of a training dummy npc in each town the player could endlessly engage in battle for extra practice but with enemies that can respawn it might be kind of moot the dialogue with the npc characters I think is particularly well designed in that it forces you to recall words and phrases you have learned when deciding what to say to the characters you encounter which really reinforces the biggest weakness of how I have been learning and gives me that extra push with output that I've been needing overall I think this is a great way to learn a language, I dont have the dlc yet but I will probably end up picking that up after I complete my first run of the game on beginner currently I plan on using runs of this game along with how I'm studying spanish currently untill I can understand every line of dialogue without having to translate either in game or in my head and I will update this review as I play if any of my thoughts change or as I discover new things
If your goal is feel immersed in a world that will allow you to learn another language without thinking about it, this is your game. I enjoyed playing it myself, but I was even more impressed that 1. my 4th grader wanted to try it, and 2. she was able to complete the first level in Spanish having never taken Spanish or played an RPG for that matter; I'm sure she will finish the game over break. Newcomer gives you a taste of what it's like to have that desire to really need to know the words in order to communicate, something other learning apps just can't match. This won't be the only tool that you need to learn a new language, but it will be the most fun one.
It's one of the few language learning games and I am enjoying it so far. There is room for improvement, but I am happy to just have it for practice. Also I don't mind the small investment and hoping updates come in the future. Thanks for the game!
It's a helpful game for intermediate and advanced conversations. The content isn't totally relevant to everyday life or practical uses, but there are a lot of great tools for speaking and writing sentences. It could be improved by having the option to slow down the conversations. The bot speaks fast.
Only spent a short amount of time with this game before writing this, but I gotta say I'm pretty impressed, it might be early access and missing some things, but what's there surprised me. I'll say I don't know how well this game would work if you're trying to exclusively use it to learn a new language, but if you were taking a class or using something else in tandem this is a great tool. I studied spanish in college about 10 years ago and have used it sparingly since then, I was never very good, once you start getting into past and future tenses and possessives I had trouble keeping up. I was surprised right away this game starts you off with very normal sentences, people aren't talking to you in basic beginner spanish they're using normal speech which might include possessives or present progressive tense. Which with my limited background was really nice, because I mostly knew what was being said and actually learned some new things within 10 minutes of playing. However the game lets you translate the entire speech box to see what they're saying, then you can highlight sections of it, as in, parts of a sentence, to translate just that part (great for my partial knowledge) and then you click again to bring up a translation of a particular word where it also explains the context, so if a word literally means "until" but it's used like the at the start of a sentence to reference what was just talked about, it explains it very clearly. So those possessives or conjugations I don't know very well are explained simply. Really impressed, if you're trying to learn a language this is an awesome tool that's totally worth the price, right now it only includes spanish, french and italian (I believe double check for yourself) hopefully they add more, would love to see norweigan , or at least german.
I was looking for a language learning game for a while now, and found this one by accident. I played just 2 hours at the time of writing this review, and while I cannot comment about the quality of translation, I still spent this time learning new phrases, trying to pronounce the newly learned sentences, and trying to focus on spelling as combat needs it occasionally. In my opinion, the game has a good idea and the execution is good, especially for the price tag. I will be playing more time permitting and hope to learn more.
It's a fun little way to learn a language. I wish the IPA was involved though.
