Genre
Ein Hidden Object Adventure
Story

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow third group

Save mafia bosses... and children! ... in this quirky title
An odd little game that somehow has this crazy premise, but makes it work with some solid gameplay. So many hidden object games follow the formula of playing as a detective because it works so well with the exploration and puzzle-solving aspects of the game - and this one gets it bang on. Not only is the protagonist quite a 'looker', or beautiful 'broad' if I'm getting my lingo right, but more amazingly, there isn't any silly behaviour that is often used as a plot solution to keep the story going. I played on hard and am proud to say I got stuck several times. Most of these were late game, and some were quite simple - often I'd just completely missed a point of interest. I managed to get through without wasting too much time trawling through different screens, and without hints, so it isn't ridiculously hard. My only grief with this game is with the gameplay. There are no hidden object mess scenes - the ones that give you a huge list of items to find. Instead, this game takes a more realistic approach, where everything you pick up is needed to advance. In terms of what this game calls a 'hidden object scene', is actually a domino effect sequence of finding and using a small list of items (clues given as object outlines) to conclude with one final item. Other gameplay elements involve looking around different zones (maps or screens) for areas of interest, applying items in your inventory to points of interest to find more items or clues, or just looking for helpful items lying around. I do feel like the game could have had some mess scenes though. There is an expectation for them when you start a game like this, and a feeling of disappointment when you don't get one. _____________________ Good variety of areas, some collectables to look for, morphing objects as well, nothing fazes our protagonist ... just a really neat package all around. Recommended.
Very decent hidden object game.
This is actually a pretty great HOG puzzle adventure game. It's a modern HOG, meaning that there are no classic HOG scenes where you just find objects; instead, you solve small puzzles on every HOG scene. It also has collectibles and extra stuff to find in every area. Very decent playtime too, almost 9 hours! When I read it had to do with the mafia, I thought I might not get into it, since it's a topic I'm not particularly fond of; however, the story barely touches upon that, and instead focuses heavily on supernatural phenomena and ghostly shenanigans. It's a good opening for an HOG series, I'll definitely check the sequels in the future.
What can I say? I am familiar with Five-BN games via their "Lost Lands" and "Darkness and Flame" series (Fourth doesn't exist) and they always had something interesting going on. Whether it be a mystery that makes you think or the game play itself is fun... You are there for the Hidden Object experience of it all. Here is no different. This also seems to be the first game listed on their page and I was awake for the entirety of all. (When you play as many H.O.Gs as I did... You will start to sleepwalk through most of them.) I liked the pretty MC, (even though she sleeps and wakes in her makeup and nice hair lol) the story was okay, but I always like the extra Hidden Objects ya gotta find and they do get crafty with mini-games. The whole H.O. scenes are just "get this item" and "use it here". Which is fun too, considering the 99% of the "find the item on the list" I've been through... XD Again. This H.O.G. is fine. It'll take you longer than 5 hrs for all Achievements, but for just the heck of it? You'll get something out of it. (Probably).
New York Mysteries: Secrets of the Mafia is actually one of the hidden gems in the HOG genre. The presentation and aesthetics all build up a sense of urgency and dread that one would expect from 60's America. The hidden object puzzles are unlike the more familiar ones found in Artifex Mundi games, instead of finding objects by their name, you are given a silhouette through which you have to find said object. The objects themselves are meant to be used again in the scene, unlike traditional HOGs where you just find random unrelated objects and only 1 of them is added to your inventory at the end. I have played many HOGs and I much prefer the mechanics in this game. But where the game truly shines is definitely the voice actiing. Characters speak so naturally with their voices actually fits their personality. I recently finished Nightmares from the Deep 3 and the difference in quality of VOs is night and day. New York Mysteries defenitely beats all other HOGs released in the same period. Although, one irritating issue was that the lip sync on the characters is laughable blurry mess. The pre-rendered cutscenes are also of a much lower quality, espically noticable in underground tram scenes, but such issues are to be expected from indie made in 2015. Putting aside the minor issues with this game, I am looking forward to playing the other games in the series now.
loving this game
