A great roguelite that allows unlimited customisation and buffs based on the cute animals that comes across your way. At the start of each round, you will get to place your animals and plants to gain upgrades which allows your base to grow (look much better) after each round. Gameplay wise, it offers unique weapons and passives that make you want to try new builds after each round. I particularly like that there's no cap to how many passives you can have so you really get to see your character get really OP towards the end. The boss fights are really unique as each 'arena' fits its environment and the boss moves are 'fair' in a sense that they are lightly telegraphed so you have a chance to dodge it. The story itself is interesting enough for you to want to read the every dialogue to really see how it unfolds, with the ending being 10/10.
What to say about NEB? This is the buggiest game I've ever enjoyed. That about sums it up. While some bugs on release are expected these days, I would expect far fewer than what I've experienced in 5 hours of playing NEB. - The currency has no real discernable way to accrue it. At one point in a run I was up to 1600 currency and 5 minutes later I had 50. Someone watching me play said that they thought the game was frequently subtracting what I earned from my total while other times it was adding. - Add to that multiple game-freezing runs where a new menu popping up for a game choice just freezes everything. - Add that when exiting to the main menu after a freeze, you keep your animal/food/scenery progression, but lose any currency you accrued, making unlocking power ups that much harder. As far as criticisms of the game itself, I was disappointed in how easy it was to get overpowered. I beat the game on my 3rd run. A specific ranged weapon + heal + poison just lets you sit in a corner and hold a button down to win - that is, if the boss doesn't glitch and you need to quit to main menu and lose your currency. The story is also extremely odd. I am going to assume the dev has a real nihilistic opinion of humanity considered how irredeemable they are in this story. There is also no real reason to do runs after you beat it once. The story is over and the same cutscenes play every time you fight a boss that you saw the first time. There isn't new dialogue or expanded scenes or anything like that. The players home base sanctuary also seems devoid of things to do. There's a building that has stuff in it that in any other roguelite you'd expect to be able to interact with to power up different abilities. But in NEB, nothing is interactible and you can never repair your cabin. The most you can do outside your cabin is decorate with stuff you find from your runs, which is nice enough if you're into decorating, I guess. That said, I'll repeat: this is the glitchiest game I've ever enjoyed. The pixel art of the little animals is very cute and I especially like the little dinosaurs you can get to accompany you. The art of the various plants that bob around on your sanctuary are also extremely nice. Seeing all of your animals bouncing around your sanctuary is great. The various powers the animals give you are excellent and fun. Becoming overpowered is extremely easy and can be fun - just not when it lets you beat the game so quickly and easily. Overall, grab this at a discount and go in expecting a very cute, very easy, VERY glitchy roguelite and you'll have a great time.
I don't usually play roguelites but having cute bouncy animals by my side made it super enjoyable :3 The art and animations are just adorable!
Highly recommend getting this game if you're looking for something unique compared to your daily run-of-the-mill slops which are pushed by big budget studios. A very niche genre of game which blends both minor homesteading on one side and fast-paced combat levels which are guaranteed to reel you in and leave you asking for more. I truly wished this game could be longer but it is not a bad thing considering this game falls into the category of "short & sweet". Really looking forward for more releases from the talented team of One More Dream Studios in the near future!
Get this game if you: - Are a fan of its art design and visual effects - Appreciate smooth animation and input response - Love roguelite mechanics - Support the indie dev scene
Pros: -Lots of cute little animals -Pretty fun gameplay -Lots of potential combos Cons: -Pretty buggy with clunky controls, especially in building the garden. -Very easy, I beat it on my 3rd try -Pretty short/lackluster story. It was over so quick Honestly, I absolutely love the concept and this has so much potential, but it just falls short. If this game had a long, in depth story, was much more difficult, and had all of it's bugs fixed, this would be on a completely different level. Still, having said all that, for what it was worth, I still enjoyed what it had
I genuinely love this game. The sprite animations are beautifully crafted, and the gameplay feels fresh and engaging. You can really tell a lot of heart and care went into making it. There’s a sense of passion behind every detail that makes the experience stand out.
Love the story. An interesting spin on the roguelite genre. Plus i have my cute pet friends w me
At first I dont get the 'bullet hell' tag, and soon I completely get it! Surprisingly, the hit impacts feel really good! Quite a fun short game regardless of some tiny bugs. Could be even better when improved.
