Interesting gamejam style game. Not sure who recorded that gameplay footage on the Steam store but that's not how you are supposed to play, about halfway through I realised you are invincible to enemy attacks while dodging so you are meant to time your dodge dash right when the enemy attacks and get through the screens doing that. Playing agressively it's almost like your attack sound effects sync up with the beats and can be quite satisfying. It's good that there's no lives/score system in the game and you just respawn on the same screen, removes a lot of frustation and really encourages you to try and perfect the dash punch combo for each encounter. Speaking of sounds, the soundtrack is amazing jazz-hop beats and one of the best parts of the game, really like the vibes of the soundtrack alongside the color palette chosen for the stages. Now onto my criticisms - The guy who double attacks with the long hand needs his hitbox tightened up, it's too easy to trigger him from outside of his attack range which makes him a pushover. Not sure why those big red flying crab things exist as they don't seem to pose any threat? Should be an early game enemy rather than late-game. They attack way outside of your range and you can just easily take them down. Graphically it could use a few tweaks, some of the scenes have bad cropping and cut the enemy sprites in half but it's only every 5 or so scenes that you encounter that glitch. Enemy variety is okay for this style of game, the fat guy with the tounge most annoying enemy for me. Game is incredibly short with no storyline. Around half hr long and the ending was so abrupt I accidentally skipped past it. Whenever you backtrack off a screen the enemies respawn which is a little annoying but it's understandable, they need to pad out the length wherever they can. I thought it was alright for $1. Get it on sale if you can.
Nekobyte, developed and published by Blaze Epic, is a small-scale indie action game that blends retro-inspired visuals with a surprisingly deliberate and methodical approach to combat. While it initially appears to be a straightforward side-scrolling brawler, it quickly becomes clear that the game is designed around timing, spacing, and observation rather than fast-paced button mashing. The premise is simple and somewhat quirky, placing players in control of a hoodie-wearing protagonist accompanied by a cat, navigating through a stylized world filled with hostile creatures. Despite its lighthearted visual identity, the gameplay leans toward a more disciplined and occasionally punishing structure. The combat system is the centerpiece of the experience, emphasizing precision over aggression. Each enemy encounter requires attention to patterns, with players needing to carefully time their attacks and dodges to avoid taking damage. This gives the game a rhythm that feels closer to a simplified soulslike than a traditional beat-em-up, where patience is often more effective than rushing in. While this design adds tension and a sense of accomplishment when mastered, it also exposes the limitations of the system. The range of moves and interactions is fairly narrow, and over time, the repetition of similar encounters can begin to feel predictable. The challenge is engaging in short bursts, but it may struggle to maintain momentum across longer sessions. Visually, Nekobyte adopts a clean pixel art style that draws inspiration from classic 8-bit games while maintaining a modern level of clarity. The environments are relatively minimal, focusing on readability and function rather than intricate detail, which works well for a game centered on precise movement and combat. Character design stands out more than the backgrounds, particularly the protagonist’s cat-themed aesthetic, which adds a bit of charm and identity to the experience. The overall presentation is cohesive, even if it does not push boundaries in terms of artistic complexity. One of the more interesting elements is the inclusion of a randomizer mode, which changes enemy placements and encounter patterns. This feature adds a layer of unpredictability that helps extend the game’s replay value, encouraging players to adapt and refine their approach with each run. Given the relatively short length of the main experience, this mode plays an important role in giving players a reason to return. However, while it introduces variation, it does not fundamentally change the gameplay, so its appeal largely depends on how much the player enjoys the core combat loop. The pacing of Nekobyte is clearly designed for quick play sessions. It does not attempt to offer a long or content-heavy experience, instead focusing on delivering a concise and focused gameplay loop. This makes it accessible and easy to pick up, but it also highlights the game’s limited scope. There is little in the way of progression systems, narrative depth, or evolving mechanics, which may leave some players wanting more after they have seen everything the game has to offer. From a technical standpoint, the game performs well within its modest ambitions. It runs smoothly, has straightforward controls, and is easy to get into regardless of hardware. Its simplicity ensures accessibility, but it also means that it lacks the level of polish or additional features that could elevate it further. The overall package feels functional and complete, though not particularly ambitious. In the end, Nekobyte is a focused indie project that offers a brief but engaging take on precision-based combat within a retro framework. It succeeds in delivering a consistent and occasionally challenging experience, especially for players who appreciate methodical gameplay and replayable structures. However, its limited variety and relatively shallow systems prevent it from reaching greater heights. It is best enjoyed as a compact, skill-driven experience rather than a deep or expansive action game. Rating: 6/10
