Necrocat is a casual roguelite where you fight enemies and collect gear by moving Twilight the Rogue Cat across a grid. I've had a lot of fun with it so far but the game does have a few balance issues.
What Works For Me
✅ The cartoony 2D art is adorable; I especially love Twilight and his empty paws, the variety of creative monsters, and the detailed level backgrounds. ✅ Great music and fun sound effects. The theme is catchy, but does get repetitive after a bit. ✅ Straightforward card design and familiar gameplay mechanics made the game easy to learn, but the random cards and limited amulet space kept me on my toes. ✅ Weapons, magic, and shields lose (1) point of effectiveness with each use, forcing you to stay on the move, collect more gear, and adapt your playstyle to whatever you have on hand. ✅ Different enemy types have a range of possible attack and health values, so even identical monsters may not be identical threats and you can puzzle your way out of tough spots. ✅ The monster abilities are fun to work around, explained well in-game, and add a bit of extra crunch. I wasn't paying attention and learned the hard way not to play fisticuffs with bombers.
What Doesn't Work For Me
❎ When you hit an enemy with a melee weapon or your fists, the enemy hits you back for its full attack value. I love this, except: enemies do this even when you kill or overkill them. So, if you only have a sword and find yourself surrounded by enemies with higher attack values than your current health, the run is over; you can't strategize or finesse your way to safety. ❎ If you hit an adjacent enemy with a ranged weapon or ranged spell, the enemy does not retaliate like they would if you were using a melee weapon. I just think it's silly that I can stab a zombie bat with five arrows and it won't react, but it'll do five retaliation damage if I cleave it in half with a sword. ❎ Windowed mode frequently reverted to Fullscreen between levels, and Fullscreen had a nasty habit of blacking out both monitors for a few seconds and minimizing the game when I attempted to work on another screen. This discouraged me from trying to stream or record footage for a video review.
Final Thoughts
I've had a lot of fun with Necrocat so far and look forward to finishing off the titular boss. Levels play quickly and it's not particularly crunchy or complicated, so it's easy to pick up and play for 20-30 minutes at a time. Something in the repetition and graphics make the game feel relaxed and kinda cozy; I've found it pairs well with LitRPG audiobooks and hot tea. The random card draw can be frustrating, and I still have runs that abruptly end because I haven't seen a potion or shield or ranged weapon in ages and every monster can kill me in one hit. (Not to beat a zombie horse here, but I really don't like that even overkilled monsters retaliate against melee attacks.) But now that I've gotten the hang of things, upgraded amulets, and learned how to manage health, it's more about strategy than luck of the draw; even the incredible OP-ness of ranged weapons can be more of a feature than a balance problem.
Recommendation
Necrocat is a perfect fit for roguelite and puzzle fans looking for something repetitive to wind down and relax with or to play during lunch breaks. It’s a great blend of simple card game mechanics and Cult of the Lamb's dark-but-cute vibes. I would not recommend it if you're looking something with flashy animation, if you struggle to parse through a lot of text, or if you don't like games where bad luck can end your run. Dan da Enchant Games aqui! Eu amei as artes, a vibe e a progressão de dificuldade do jogo! Super recomendo darem uma chance! Ja quero ver mais jogos desse studio!
I hate to say it, but Necrocat isn’t good. I really like the concept, but it just doesn’t work for a lot of different reasons. So, above all else the gameplay doesn’t work, it is mostly luck-based and that makes it feel unfair. Your movement is the way that you strategize and play; however, your options are so limited and you are still at the mercy of so much RNG as it determines what comes onto the board rather than a well-planned route. If you are screwed on healing, armor, or ranged weapons you will take too much damage from attacking and be put into a poor position, sometimes you get out of it often you can’t. This is where the roguelike elements could be utilized to change the game, but they are so sparse that they might as well not even be there. Yes, you can get up to 3 amulets and upgrade them, but with the way that enemy damage and health scales it feels more like a way to keep up with their stats than anything else, but even that is not enough. You are pushed heavily into making certain choices, I felt that I had to take health and dodge as you get so little of it and I kept getting melee weapons on the board you will take a bunch of damage. And that is the thing, melee weapons are the most common, so you will take a lot of damage and you should use the amulet that boosts them, so there is your final slot, it feels like to me there is a right way to build. So, build variety does not feel great as when I started to get the amulets from the second stage, they were not any better. Now these can be upgraded marginally, but once again, it just works with the scaling more than anything else, so that doesn’t free you at all either, you can’t just farm like hell and dodge all the weaker enemies once you upgrade that amulet. So without getting new amulets that made a big difference and the stronger scaling of enemies, I started getting runs that felt so unfair in stage 2 that I decided not to play after that. So beyond the amulets, the other roguelike element you have is the weapons you can buy to start the run with to increase your armor and damage; however, all armor and weapons have a certain amount of uses and with each use, the item becomes less effective (this is true for items in the field as well). So, you can get a handful of uses and then they are gone, when you move between zones in each run you can get the option to pick them back up, but once again you get a few uses and then they are gone, so they kind of just suck. What makes this even worse is the amount of gold you have to farm for this is a lot because if you fail your run most of your gold is lost, so it isn’t like you can start every run with a solid boost. If I want the 80 gold armor and 80 gold melee weapon I need 160 gold and if I am getting screwed on runs I might be getting 20 gold a run (2/3 of what you found is lost on death), so I only get a good start 1 out of every 9 games and it is only marginally useful this led me to ignore weapon purchasing most of the time so that roguelike element loses its luster too. This is strange though because if more roguelike elements were added it could turn things in your favor and make this game a lot of fun. Easier and more unlocks, abilities you can earn to move around cards on the board to give you more control and turn the tides of the board, ways to change card odds so that ranged or magic weapons are more common, and so on. Maybe later the game has some amulets that do this, but with the low amount of amulet spaces and the fact that I would have to bash my head hoping for good luck for way too long to finally unlock them, I think I will pass. There are other issues I have: Enemies are far too punishing, ranged enemies are an absolute pain and in the right spots ruin your run immediately, combat feels bland and impactless, I felt like I was cheesing the game when I fought and beat the Necrocat and was disappointed that there was not any major reward for it, the menu/UI design feels cluttered, in the options general volume is listed as “Geral Volume” instead (which is just a really disappointing oversight and screams lack of polish), and so on but I have other things to talk about. Perhaps in the future, if more roguelike elements and options for play are added then this game may be a really fun experience, but in this state, I just wanted to be done with it and gave it a few hours of my time before tapping out. The story isn’t bad, it is simple and I like it. It builds a quirky simple world and I think that the world expression through text, enemy design, and image cutscenes is good. Overall, for a game of this type, I think it is good and I like it, I just wish it was easier to experience I do however have complaints about the sound design. A single looping track for the combat is not great especially when that loop is roughly a minute and 30 seconds, and I do not think that either the menu or the combat song is great which does not help, the Necrocat fight music is decent though. The basic combat sounds aren’t bad, nothing special but they weren’t problematic they were just kind of there and they are limited in the amount of them that there are. Overall sound design is mixed. Graphically I like the game, I think the art stylization is great and the main cat looks great. The enemy and item designs are a bit odd (except for the Necrocat which just looks awesome), but I think that they fit the world really well. The style and graphics are easily the main highlight of the game. I always hate giving negative reviews especially when the devs are nice enough to give me a curator key, but the fact remains that I didn’t enjoy my time, which is sad because when I saw the art style and saw that it was labeled as a roguelike (one of my favorite genres) I was really excited. Here is what I would say though, for the price I would say that it still may be worth a grab. This is the devs' first game and supporting them for the cool work that they have done here is a worthwhile endeavor, a lot was done right here (even if I do focus on the critical a lot in my reviews) most particularly with the concept of the game. If patched and adjusted enough this game will be good, but I do not review things off of potential, so at this time, I can’t recommend it. I am also always in favor of supporting Indie devs so if the idea looks interesting or if you think that I am being too harsh and want to make your own opinion I encourage a buy. Otherwise, I think this is an easy pass if you ask me.
FOR MORE CARD GAMES FOLLOW US CARD GAME KING
Necrocat is joins the line of the many card crawls where your characters tries to outmaneuver enemies on a grid while picking up equipment and powerups and managing health and attack values. There are already great additions to the genre like Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale, so what does Necrocat do differently? Unfortunately, not much. In many ways it's a distilled version of the tried and true formula. The equipment and power-ups are simple (health and damage - melee, ranged and AOE), as are the enemies. Something positive can be said about simplicity allowing approachability, but those seeking depth will not find it. Artifacts provide passive bonuses and in theory provide provide variety and different builds, but because they are upgradable, there isn't much incentive to change up your gear especially against increasingly difficult enemies. Gold is another resources that feels lackluster, only providing a starting bonus in equipment. It's not a bad game and it rewards some planning, but it doesn't stand out in any way from the crowd.
The positive
+ Simple and approachable
The neutral
* Only 3 slots for amulets and them being upgradable means it's less rewarding to experiment with different setups than to keep the same 3 amulets.
The negative
- Not much depth - The music was difficult to listen to and felt distracting. I had to play without sound. - Repetitive gameplay and low enemy and equipment variety.
Conclusion:
Necrocat doesn't have much to help it stand out from the plethora of similar games, but still follows a simple formula that makes the genre mildly entertaining. Decent pick for casual playing, not recommended for those looking for strategy. Careful Recommendation.
Necrocat is honestly such a cool mix of deckbuilding, roguelike and puzzle gameplay. Every move matters and the art is just adorable. If you’re into strategy games with a fun twist (and cats), this is definitely worth checking out! Jogo muito legal, arte bonito. O Gameplay é interessante. Deixo a dica de sempre melhorar os amuletos e de tempos em tempos visitar as fases antigas para conseguir matar o chefão.
My Playthrough : https://youtu.be/3qdHBJ3eCvo Overall: 5/10 Decent, but it gets boring quickly. Graphics: 10/10 • The art direction is charming, with a fantastic theme and color palette. Audio: 4/10 • The background music is decent but becomes repetitive after a while. Gameplay: 4/10 • There’s too much RNG, making it hard to rely on anything except movement. • Monsters still damage me even when I overkill them, forcing me to constantly search for healing. • By the time I reach Stage 2, I’m already bored. The gameplay loop feels repetitive: check monster stats, attack, heal, and repeat. • There’s no real strategy or synergy between weapons and armor. • The UI font looks a bit amateurish compared to the otherwise fantastic assets. Bugs: • The "Amulet" is sometimes referred to as "Charms."
