Edit 2 years after the fact: Forget about all of that, it's unplayable without dgVoodoo, and it's actually a terrible port. Literally a copy/paste of the CD version without a single modern compatability fix added to it. Sure, non-german players can now IN THEORY launch the game and play it without that stupid DirectX error thanks to the patch that only german copies got back then as far as I know, but it's barely the... bare minimum. The positive review is for the game itself, but this Steam release is awful. Alright, so first let's talk about this Steam version. It launched a few days ago, and it was a big disappointement. I was really hyped when I found the game was going to be on Steam because I thought everything would be fixed. Well, It wasn't the case. The DirectX crash was still there, the overall instability of the game too, no music, and most importantly, the playtime was broken so you couldn't write a review. (No Steam Multiplayer support but while it's a bit of a let down it wasn't as important as having a functional product.) Some feedback from the players later, the 1.04a Patch that fixed the DirectX issue among other things has been applied to the game (precisely today, a few hours before I started writing this review), alongside a fix for the playtime issue. I haven't encountered any crash so far. The music is still missing and it's still sad that there's no multiplayer support. [strike]But the game now works as it should without the need to use 3rd Party software such as dgVoodoo, and it looks like the devs/publisher really cares about the game despite the awful launch. As a port of the original game on Steam, and without including Multiplayer, I'd say it's a solid 8,5/10. Fix the missing music and some rough things and it's perfect (as a port)[/strike] For the game itself, it's a bit janky, bugged, rough around the edges and a bit budgety-feeling, but it's so much fun that 90% of these rough edges and weird physics moments are easily forgettable. The Arcade mode is your classic racing game, pick a track, pick a car from many different categories and have fun. It's the most accessible mode of the game. The Expert mode is your more serious and complex Career mode, with a good numbers of things to manage and take into account. I haven't played it much because it's where the game's instability shows up the most, but it's still fun. What keeps the game from being an outdated classic racing game is the variety of the modes and the personnality of the game. As stupid as racing with cars that won't go further than 90km/h sounds, it's still interesting and honestly rather challenging since a simple mistake can really screw you up. Racing with American trucks or Monster trucks sounds stupid? Who cares, it's fun and refreshing to switch from time-to-time to these unusual modes, even if the physic problems really shows up in these. Cars with weapons sounds stupid? It is, and it's so damn fun. Or why would someone want to drive a Bus against a car that goes from 0 to 300km/h in 4 sec? Because it's dumb and you can still win by just making sure the car crashes in you so hard it breaks it! It's really far from a perfect game, and sometimes the AI is just frustrating and feels like it's sticking to the road but whatever, I always come back for more because it's so fun and the vehicles still handle really well imo, apart from the janky physics.
it's not as charming as I had in mind.... Retro is sometimes only a memory ;(
keeps crashing like there's no tomorrow. I can't believe so many defend this port and why for many it works and I have been trying all kinds of fixes to no success...it will run for like a minute until you touch an AI and it's gg crash2desktop
Crashes frequently :(
Bring back childhood memories. The game is nothing for today's gamers. However, I grew up playing these kinds of games and I think it's great.
Amazing that this historic masterpiece was added to steam! It was my first racing game, I loved to play it together with my brother in my childhood! We can play now again together! Thanks a lot!
(EN): I have a mixed opinion. I've been looking for the game for decades. I played the game as a child but unfortunately never found it among the key data listed. I came across the game more or less by chance (on Steam) and bought it straight away for 1.99 EUR. About the game itself: It really is the game from my childhood. Even if there is a golden rule that you should leave the games of your childhood there, I still find the game positive, even if it logically can't keep up with well-known games, regardless of the type. Technically, it runs perfectly on my modern PC, as long as you don't set the resolution to 2K in the first run (yes, I tried and failed). However, the game ran at a typical resolution at the time. I somehow remember the start menu and the configs differently. The menu is unfortunately buggy (either because of the resolution or because it simply doesn't cope with the system). Thanks to my IT savvy, I was still able to click my way through and played a few fun rounds. For newcomers, I simply advise against this game. If you remember it from back then, I think you can give it a try, even if it will probably only give you 1-3 hours of play. But you like to remember the good old days, don't you?
