edit: There has literally never been an update, it is abandoned. This is a tough one, as there are benefits using the software, but there are also some huge downsides.
Pros:
+ I can recommend this software if you only want to document and write your campaign information down. + The internal wiki features are good, you can hyperlink to other articles and quickly get around your information + One time purchase, no subscriptions! Thats a huge plus. Not to mention that the software itself is pretty inexpensive to begin with. + There is a virtual tabletop (VTT) component that covers a couple of good things like dice throws, video streaming sync and permissons for individual players.
Cons:
- No documentation. Its so hard to figure stuff out. The software covers way more than just writing text, but you will miss it as there is no explanation for a lot of it. You can simply miss out on features. - You need to code. If you have no knowledge of programming, the software loses 90% of its features. You need coding for the simplest things. Dice strings are more complicated to set up than in any other VTT I used and its a huge hassle to even try to implement custom dice or other necessities. - Setting up a character sheet is way more complicated than it looks. The worst thing is the formatting. If you make a table and make a mistake.....there is no Ctrl+Z to simply undo stuff as far as I know and it can ruin a lot of work. Deleting tables or images can lead to huge formatting issues, that are not undoable. - The free to play version is nothing more than the client for players to connect to a paying host. Its nice that players dont have to pay anything more, I much appreciate it, but not being able to try out the actual campaign writing as the GM is not a good thing. 2h with Steam refunds does not cover enough time. - I tried it out with players and we had a couple of problems. Images werent visible, permissions were sometimes ignored by MA.....we quickly returned to other options available. - I hate the standard dice throw. Its a minor thing that bothers me to no end. On a standard throw the dice will always display the complete sum of all the dice.......you have to hover your mouse over this sum to actually see the individual dice numbers that make up this sum. 90% of all Pen and Papers I played use individual dice outcome or a dicepool where one of those contributes to a success. Having them hidden each time was tiring. And it makes no sense to me that this is the default. - no documentation of dice strings.....how am I supposed to know which strings this software uses, every VTT has their own systems and this isnt different here, only that there is nowhere to look them up. - Look up Sophies Dice on Steam. Its such a good software, that allows you to string all the dice you need, seriously all of them in an easy documented interface. Custom dice are simply dropping an image file onto the side of a die. User friendliness is very important and I wish MA would understand this and patch in that direction. - The dev answeres questions on his discord and tries his best to help, but there are so many questions you can ask and he can answer in time. It would have been best to have.....documentation. - Workshop downloads didnt work for me. Downloaded a character sheet, its nowhere to find, cant be used and again there is no documentation on how to implement it. Oh boy........I so wanted to love MA, but its too complicated for actual play. I hoped it would be the all in one solution that I so craved for, but in the end it is too complicated and user unfriendly. But I wouldnt refund, as making a wiki for your campaign is quite good.

(my time with the app is way larger then whats show on steam) TLDR: came for one thing and stayed for features that arent even listed. The storepage doesnt make the app any justice. For starters its like Legend Keeper, World Anvil and similars but whitout subscriptions fees. that alone means a resounding YES, RECOMENDED. But i was surprised to find it already goes beyond that and aims to be much more- theres already all the foundation to actually run games with Mythic Archive, going into the role of a Roll 20 and similars, and a extremely interesting system for automating rolls that ive never seen before; Its like the kinds of scripts/mods programers do for specific rulesets in Foundry (a virtual tabletop app) but completely adjustable in the app itself- to the point ive been able to 'program' so to speak 2 weird self-authored rulesets. All the stats, skill rolls and so on, even the more complex or multi-step. I could be already runing games with it if the maps/images were working online (right now multiplayer isnt loading the maps for players yet if they run on the web, but would work if everyone had the app). The most awesome thing for me so far was a wizard chargen builder- it allows to create a extremely user friendly step by step process of character creation for the players; At every step explanations and lore/pictures are possible, and all the busywork of assiging points, writing down skills or whatever a system uses can be automated wich is freaking amazing for non-veteran players (and even for veterans for speed). Feels like how digital adaptations of famous ttrpgs (like dnd) handle character creation. Even rolling stats can be automated. In brief the features: -maps with markers and drawing, markers and areas(shapes) can be linked/show to articles, sheets, etc. -The pages/articles are like a wiki, with easy hyperlinking (start typing and it matches existing pages) --Amazing layout options and editor for the pages. Very clean, intuitive, includes columns layouts, pictures with text, tables, etc --secrets and sharing options (ways of showing and hiding what the gm want from the players) -Tabs for any pages(and character sheets) -online chat, dicerolling, initiative tracker --advanced automation/triggers that can be used in the chat but also inside the pages -character generator step by step, fully customizable +a very interesting way of making projects and modules- it allows to create details for a ruleset for example as 1 project, and then any number of other projects that can call information and functions from the ruleset; So it allows to make a basis like the rules and not needing to repeat or import into different campaigns Now for the cons: -the web version (very handy for players joining) cant show images and maps yet, only users with the app can see those. -no line of sight, fog of war or strict grid for battlemaps yet -no fancy extras like corkboard or relationship maps like some similars do, but similars are aparently planed -some roughness around the edges (but surprisingly polished for me, i was expecting way less from early acess) And the biggest one imo, to the point its almost a cardinal sin: No Documentation, nor tutorials nor any tips. For the most part they're uneeded, the whole writing and map handling is extremely well polished, clean, responsive and intuitive... ...but the character generator and creating the events(automated rolls to advanced scripts) is up to the user to figure out. Theres examples built in and builders for most things that help the process, but even figuring those out is tricky as of yet It all comes down to the pace of updates, the dev is focused on polishing the features and the new priorized ones before documenting- its that Early Acess experience as to be expected, theres no way of having a full documentation on the parts that are still being reworked. The dev is very helpful on the official discord to clear any doubts and some documentation and further help may be coming soon. Im hyped in a way i didnt expected when i bought (i tought it was just campaing/lore/maps)- the character generator and the advanced way to automate anything rules wise is already amazing- to the point that if the app was abandoned today i would still be happy simply because i never found anything that allowed that, even more so combined with all the bells and whistles of a good wiki for ttrpg (and writers too i guess). The potential here is amazing, considering where i imagine the will app will reach this price is a steal, even more so considering the glimpses i got on what is in the works. I wish steam allowed for review scores. It would be a solid 8+ for me as it is (considering whats missing) - and as an EA title definetly a 10. I would recomend it for being a solid non-subscription no cloud-limits full fledged wiki alone but it already outpaces most of the alternatives for being a great wiki+virtual table in one package.
This is the perfect app for world building, all data is stored locally and as it doesnt have a subscription it already puts it head and shoulders above the competition. The developer is very active over on discord and although its a little rough around the edges fixes are quick and get any problems fixed. Highly recommend!
Super cool and easy to use, a lot quicker to use than a lot of web based rpg stuff. Edit: I wrote my original review on the assumption the software would continue to be updated, the dev has abandoned the project and it hasn't been updated in some time, they are not active on their discord either. If you do buy it make sure you will get some use out of the existing feature set and know that it is extremely unreliable when connecting to players over the internet to the point where it has ruined several sessions of my campaign.
A labor of love for TTRPG homebrew and worldbuilding. Especially useful if your map sizes are large (my overworld maps are usually at least 100mb), it feels pretty good to have a desktop solution that's pretty much all-in-one. If in doubt, consider wishlisting for later! Also join us on the discord
Not a paid review, I mod the discord
Cool app but severely unstable--breaks more often than it works
Potential exists, But so does failure. Sadly this is failed potential. I can't say much , but that is because there isn't much to speak about.
Almost really cool but it breaks so much and so reliably, takes several tries and sometimes we just give up, but it's like the only thing that does this. It blows, we're over invested and stuck with it
Mythic Archive, on first sight a promising program for creating your VTT games and worlds. The interface is not at all user friendly, it is quite difficult to figure things out, and has a LOT of bugs. Sometimes I find myself not being able to click somewhere, write something or do anything at all. The only solution? Deleting all of it and starting over :) Awesome. Thanks. It's a shame for the fact that you could literally set up complex systems for your plays, making VTT games incredibly fun and useful but.. the truth of the fact is, you can just use an excel file to create your system and send it through your friends. This program is just an overly complicated, buggy, abandoned project that barely works. It wastes your time, your nerves and your money. I tried to make a simple Character Sheet FIVE TIMES!! Each time, of no fault of my own, the program bugged out and I had to start EVERYTHING over. It's such a shame, but avoid..
