I have spent about 90 minutes in MUTS NO TYPO and I am at a loss for words. The game is exactly what it is purported to be… a dystopian typing exercise. Beyond that, there is not much to say. You are welcomed into Typing Trial 2391. You agree to be judged on speed, accuracy, and hesitation. Like a true Type A personality, I am determined to “pass” this test and prove that I am a proficient touch typist. The test is predictable until Round Six, when the rules start to unravel. Suddenly you are asked to make corrections, type backwards, censor, and interpret. My fingers stumble and I am eliminated. Removed from competition, as in “game over” and I am added to the list of typing ne'er-do-wells. Not willing to accept such a personal failure, I try again. This time I achieve passing scores on all ten levels of competition and I win a prize which is not quite what I expect. In a supreme act of benevolence, the office of all things related to typing (the OCPPET) offers to let me repeat the same test in Typing Trial 2392. Hmm… MUTS NO TYPO has a 1960’s Soviet feel to it… That environment is not part of my personal history, but I have watched enough TV to have a limited sense of how it might feel to be a “comrade” in a totalitarian state. You are tasked to type whatever is asked of you, with a crisp authoritarian voice reading the on-screen instructions. The data is presented in a legacy mainframe terminal interface with no frills. You can quit at any time, and the test starts all over when you return. There is no save. This means that you must complete all levels in a single sitting and if you fail, you go back to square one. The same test is used each time so you can give yourself an advantage by writing down the tricky sentences for future reference. Steam achievements are not supported. I can't give this game a "thumbs down" because it succeeds in its stated objective. However, I am not sure what target audience will enjoy MUTS NO TYPO. I found it somewhat challenging to beat the levels but once I had accomplished that, there was little else to hold my interest. If you are a “hunt and peck” typist or a very slow touch typist, then this game is probably not for you. Repeated elimination in the first few rounds is likely to result in mild irritation followed by a permanent withdrawal from the contest!
