In this simple game, you have no movement option other than the recoil from your two weapons. There is a strong gun that fires single bullets and pushes you backward with force, while the laser can be held for greater precision but deals weaker damage. The goal is to keep your character from flying too high or falling to the bottom, while avoiding damage from enemies, hazards, and a boss. The first stage scrolls downward, while the second scrolls upward and features a different boss. Although there are many things that can damage you, there are also plenty of health flasks that restore one of your hearts. There is no limit, and you can keep collecting flasks to gain even more hearts. It is a small distraction that loses its appeal after a single run, but you can get more out of it with the two player mode.
Murmur of the void, developed by 拾光社 and published by Little Studio, is a compact side-scrolling action shooter that distinguishes itself through a single, highly creative gameplay concept. Set in a bleak, post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious affliction has rendered humanity incapable of walking, the game immediately establishes a sense of vulnerability and adaptation. Instead of relying on traditional movement systems, players must navigate the environment by using the recoil from their weapons, turning every shot into both a means of attack and a method of traversal. This unusual premise is not just a narrative hook but the foundation of the entire experience. The gameplay revolves around mastering this recoil-driven movement system, which can feel awkward at first but gradually becomes intuitive with practice. Every weapon behaves differently, influencing how the player moves across the environment. A powerful shotgun blast can propel the character backward with force, while other weapons offer more controlled movement, allowing for precise positioning. This dual-purpose design creates a constant balancing act between mobility and combat, where players must carefully consider how each shot will affect their position as well as their ability to deal damage. It adds a layer of strategy that goes beyond simple shooting, requiring players to think ahead and adapt quickly to changing situations. Progression through the game is largely linear, with players advancing through a series of levels filled with enemies and environmental hazards. Each stage builds on the core mechanics, introducing new challenges that test both reflexes and control. Enemy encounters become more intense over time, often requiring players to combine movement and combat in increasingly complex ways. While exploration is present to a limited extent, the focus remains on forward momentum and overcoming immediate threats. This straightforward structure keeps the gameplay focused, though it also means that variety depends heavily on how the central mechanic evolves throughout the experience. The world itself is presented through a minimalist yet effective visual style that emphasizes clarity. Environments depict ruined structures and desolate landscapes, reinforcing the sense of a world that has been fundamentally altered. Character animations and effects are simple but functional, ensuring that players can easily track movement and actions despite the unconventional control scheme. While the visuals do not aim for high levels of detail, they successfully support the gameplay by maintaining readability and consistency. Narratively, the game takes a subtle approach, offering only glimpses of its setting and story through environmental cues and brief context. The premise of searching for a rumored place of safety provides a basic motivation, but the focus remains on the gameplay experience rather than on detailed storytelling. This minimalism can work in the game’s favor by keeping the pacing tight, though it may leave some players wishing for a deeper narrative or more developed world-building. One of the more interesting additions is the option for local cooperative play, allowing a second player to join in and share the experience. This mode introduces a different dynamic, as coordinating movement and attacks with another player can lead to both strategic opportunities and moments of chaotic fun. The cooperative aspect helps extend the game’s appeal, particularly for those who enjoy shared gameplay experiences. Despite its originality, the game does have limitations that become more apparent over time. The heavy reliance on a single core mechanic means that once players fully understand how it works, the sense of novelty can begin to fade. The lack of extensive progression systems or significant gameplay variation may also impact long-term engagement. Additionally, the relatively short length and straightforward structure make it feel more like a focused concept piece rather than a fully expansive title. Even with these shortcomings, Murmur of the void succeeds in delivering a unique and memorable experience. Its willingness to experiment with movement and redefine how players interact with the environment sets it apart from more conventional shooters. The combination of challenging mechanics, atmospheric setting, and creative design makes it an intriguing title for players who appreciate innovative ideas and are willing to adapt to something different.
