munchy mammals is a snake-inspired puzzler, not unlike greedy corgi or sniks, to name but a few. no timing or arcade nonsense, just eat everything and get to the right size, then leave. 64 levels in 5 worlds, multiple puzzles available at a time, so you can get hopelessly stuck on more than one. there are even a few extra mini-levels in the settings, pretty cool. no level skip or unlock all levels option but everything can be opened with very little effort, then you can keep trying. I managed to solve every level, perfect the first 3 worlds and left a few silver and a bunch of bronze in the rest. soft move limit with a 3-tier rating, a certain amount of gold is necessary to access the next level pack, a total of 40 to start the final batch. bronze is for anything above silver, so solving a stage in 524 moves still counts. undo got patched in, so that's good, but it doesn't work from a fail state that can sometimes be achieved. level complete shows the rating and has level select, retry and next level buttons but no on-screen level numbers. would be great if level select had more than 3 columns, less mobiley and the whole thing would fit on 2 or 3 screens. an important thing to keep in mind is 2-piece creatures and only those can turn around, as it were. things get more complicated as levels go by, what with different munchers hankering for different food, even each other. cannibalistic! in fact, this is the only mechanic: herbivore, carnivore, omnivore. I played with the mouse, works well, left click to drag stuff around, the end. controller and keyboard are also supported but hotkeys aren't shown all the time and they're not rebindable. wasd/arrows to move, enter selects, 'r' to retry. the problem is, no undo hotkey that I could find and esc quits the level instantly instead of bringing up a pause menu. decent cartoony graphics, annoying sfx and not-for-me music. loved the facial expressions in various situations (trying to eat the wrong food, standing next to a more dangerous creature, etc.). settings are only available in the main menu, with 2 separate buttons to access them for some reason (this is the second time recently, another game had 2 buttons for the credits, weird). separate volumes, resolutions, windowed mode, v-sync, screen shake slider, cursor size with an option to hide it completely. progress is stored in the registry, the worst possible place. good stuff and not too expensive, make sure to try the demo first if you're unfamiliar with the concept. it's outdated, doesn't have undo but still helps in making a decision. and while I don't care about achievements, I'm gonna mention how extremely idiotic some of them are. 1k moves on a level, 1k undos altogether, waiting 10 minutes on a level without moving, and in case these didn't waste enough time, there's another for spending A WHOLE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ HOUR on a level. divide them by 10 and they're still ridiculous.
It has a great mix of easier and more difficult levels and I like the challenge of finishing levels in less moves to get a gold medal! I also like that new mechanics are introduced every now and then throughout the game. I had a lot of fun and I hope I can get the last two gold medals after sleeping :)
Cute puzzler where you try to make the worm kinda creatures the correct length. There are herbivores, carnivores and eventually omnivores in tight quarters, and the goal is to complete levels in the most efficient manner -- it gets tough pretty fast. And my favourite feature is that, as stress relief, the game allows you to go wild and just drag the meat eaters wildly around the screen, forever eating their own tail and causing wild earthquakes.
Super cute and pretty challenging puzzle game. I want to know how many pizzas Hjalte consumed to make this.
Darker and harder than Dark Souls.
A neat and well-executed game, Munchy Mammals is clearly inspired by Snakebird, but takes that core Snake-control mechanic in a different direction. Each new puzzle mechanic is introduced well with a simple and explicitly designed level, and when mechanics are combined the puzzles become quite challenging - I've still not got gold on three of the final set - though the compact levels give one a better chance at being able to work through and find obtuse solutions. That said, the concept of a self-consuming hotdog still disturbs me.
Wow, these puzzles are small, but very difficult! Love it!
Munch
The cute looks are deceiving this game gets hard. I like that I can solve a level with a low score and come back later to get the gold medal if I need a breather on a level. Very fun sometimes mind melting game. Makes you feel like a genius when things go your way
A fun little puzzle game. I enjoy my time for this one.
