I would like to start by saying that I played through this on the Steam Deck, and it works/looked beautiful! Now. What to say about Moonflower? Well — firstly, if you’re a fan of visual novels, I highly recommend you play this game. The story is so well written, pulling you into the world of Moonflower, with unseen twists and turns that have you sitting on the edge of your seat, needing to figure out what happens next. The world, its lore and history is incredibly well-thought out, dragging you deeper as the story goes on. The way everything is tied together is done masterfully, and beautifully. You can really tell that the creators cared deeply about this world and its story, its characters and that comes across throughout Moonflower’s entirety. Skylar is an amazing protagonist, and very likable (handsome, sexy, intelligent…all of the above?), with a back story that is as intriguing as it is sad. He’s a very serious catboy — who doesn’t love a catboy, am I right? — but there is a mischievousness to him that makes you smile. Ender is…goodness, he’s so adorable, you really just want to put him in your pocket. He definitely balances out Skylar’s serious nature with his kindness and soft-spoken demeanor. He’s a very innocent and naive man, which makes his interactions with Skylar all the better — Ender is the perfect love interest…and such a mysterious character. Alyvia is the kind of woman you really don’t want to mess with, which just makes her fabulous. Strong willed and bullheaded, but definitely someone who will go out of her way to make sure to take care of someone in need. Definitely a wonderful character, and someone Skylar is lucky to have on his side. Wesley…! He’s so cute, with his stuttering and bashfulness. One might not think he’d be very good at protecting anything, but they’d be wrong. He’s incredibly dedicated, and you can tell he’s stronger than he (than anyone) thinks. The antagonist — well. Let’s just say, you’ll really want to read this story and find out yourself. The artwork for this story is strikingly beautiful. This might sound super strange, but the thighs! Yes. You read that correctly. Skylar’s thighs in particular are just…mm. *chef’s kiss* Eh-hem…but anyway. The sprites are so well done, as are the backgrounds. They really bring the story to life and are immersive. The CGs are stunning — it’s quite easy to find yourself staring at one for several minutes, just admiring it. And the chibis! I loved the addition of the chibis — they’re so cute. Speaking of immersive, the music really pulls you in, establishing you in that moment, helping you feel what the characters are experiencing; very beautifully done. Oh! And the minigame — that was super fun, and expertly crafted by the creators. Definitely something worth revisiting and messing around with more than once! …which I did. More than twice, too. All in all, I highly, highly recommend playing this game. Like, highly. It’s most definitely one of those games that, once you play through, you’ll want to play through again…and again. And probably again. Side note: I cried for all three endings. That’s the mark of a well-made, well-written game.
Two must come together to save a kingdom in danger in Moonflower, one an alchemist catboy and the other a mysterious raven-haired elf.
The Story
You play as the main character, Nika Skylar, an acclaimed alchemist invited as an honored guest to the Royal Palace of Ashmire as a personal guest of Princess Alyvia for the Moonfaire. A festival to celebrate a rare event of the silver moon. Skylar is a member of the elusive Felinis tribe and just as much of an attraction in the kingdom when he ventures out as the royal family themselves. Treated sadly with either fear or disgust and not trusted and closely monitored due to not being a human. He lost his right arm during childhood and in its place is his “living prosthetic”. The lore of this game is vast and I highly encourage anyone who reads it to purchase the art & lore book that is available as dlc. It goes into detail about the story, main characters, side characters and history of the moonflower. A really great addition to the main story.
The Characters
Princess Alyvia is strong-willed, kind and a dear friend to Skylar. They have a deep friendship between them that has grown for two decades. Royal titles pushed aside and at times playful with each other. A wonderful character and very personable. She is the adventurous type and independant, passionate and charismatic. King Eamon Dunn, the ruler of Ashmire. He is arrogant, egotistical and enjoys his power. Not a surprise set of attributes for a King. He dotes on his daughter Alyvia but treats her more like a trophy as opposed to a person. Like all nobles he was raised to despise and fear the fae. Believing them a race to be feared and enemies of his kingdom. Ender Kuu is adorable and mysterious. He is kind, soft-spoken and naive. A balance to Skylar who is more serious and reserved. The perfect contrast for a romantic partner for Skylar. Wesley Siddel is a sweetheart. Bumbling, stuttering and loveable. He is a knight and at first glance does not seem the knightly type. But he is dedicated to his role, sweet and loyal to his princess and his duties. He is constantly compared to his older brother Thane who is the captain of the Royal Guard, and despite their contrast of personalities, he cares for them deeply.
Game-play & Features
The settings are your usual find; display settings, rollback, skip options, audio controls and text speed. There is also a gallery that unlocks artwork during special gameplay moments. The hud can be hidden for those who enjoy taking screen captures. The text is very easy to read and the layout of the hud is very organized and clean. The gameplay for the most part is a typical visual novel with choices you can make along the way resulting in the story ending in one of three ways. A bad ending, neutral and good. There are mini games as well, where you can make potions or magical items. The game itself is wholesome and playable by all ages. Romantic but not spicy.
The Visuals & Audio
The artwork is well done, with colorful and vibrant characters who are drawn beautifully. The backgrounds are equally colorful and detailed. The one disappointment to me personally was the sprites in the game, although beautiful were static. No real body animations or different poses. There are subtle animations to the facial expressions but that was it. I wish the characters had more variety. Where visual novels tend to shine is in regards to artwork, and this one is no exception. The CG art created for the game (character graphic), or as I coined them “special moments” are beautifully illustrated in this game. Some of my favourite special moments or CG’s in the game I captured… https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3241823126 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3241823029 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3241823244 The soundtrack honestly was overall okay, Instrumental tracks that repeat and the characters are not voiced. Ambient noises such as glass breaking, potions bubbling and footsteps are a nice touch to add some life to the mostly static scenes.
Overall Experience
I enjoyed my time with this game. What compelled me to purchase it was the artwork as I love visual novels with well done art. The special moments in this game are beautiful. I just wish there were more of them. Maybe one for each route’s ending would have been nice, even if the ending itself was not the good route. I bought the game on sale and it was well worth the sale price. I finished the game in about 4 hours with extra time to play the extra routes. The achievements are not hard to obtain overall. What I am excited about is the upcoming dlc Moonflower: Fae’s Rest Epilogue where we get to see the romance bloom a bit more between Skylar and Ender. 🌺
Please follow our curator page, Otome Lovers, if you'd like to see more reviews like this one! SO LOVELY!!! I could learn a lot from this VN. It was executed so well, and is so well written and beautiful! If you like beautiful art and a love story wrapped in mystery then I recommend this game! The art is lovely, the story draws you in and it was really fun to see how the minigame influenced the story. Definitely pick up this game if you love BL.
Ohh... My... Goodness...! I asked the VN Gods to send me a good story... And I was rewarded with this! They did not disappoint. What a beautiful game. I am also completely on board with such handsome/pretty/gorgeous guys all gathered together to be looked at... It certainty gave me a thrill. A toned down kind of a thrill. The game itself was made with a delightful abundance of love and care. You can FEEL IT in every word... Scene... Everywhere...! It's so good and warm... Enveloping you as you read it... Making you crave more and more. Backgrounds? Gorgeous. I definitely wouldn't object to seeing some of these in real life! Cat boi? I admit... I mostly kept looking at the game because of that... But the game always felt like it was far more than just eye candy and so... Cat boi became more of a special bonus on top of already delicious dish, filled with goodness that came with a dessert to boot! And the characters?! They were drawn really well too! I was impressed that they made a woman... That wasn't dainty/frail looking! Who was given a well proportioned body and who was actually INTERESTING and had SKILLS! The story... I will admit... I only read the good end... (Come on, I need some goodness in my life... So spare me right this moment until I get my bearings!) But even that wasn't an ending where everything came together perfectly. Hell, it had an interesting turn of events that were BEGGING for a continuation! I paused several times throughout the game to THINK about stuff and just stare at the area they were in. I was also more than normally excited for the romance! And to that I say... I DEFINITELY want what they were having! I too want to have an organic connection/attraction/romance with someone and feel like we are meant to be! (I do like the usage of the word "organic" in the book that way. :p) Well seeing as even the VN Gods favored this game, it is safe to say that this game was pretty damn awesome and heartfelt. I heard/saw that a possible continuation was coming out and there is an art book too, so I AM THERE BABY! LAY IT ON ME! YES, YES AND MORE YES! I will definitely read it again in the future. Probably several times and sigh at all the good parts to annoy the sheet out of anyone around me. Because when they ask "what's wrong?" I will reply... "It's just so good...!" Thank you. Thank... YOU! THANK YOU!!! :D :) >:3
Beautiful art and interesting story! Love the main character! ^_^
Honestly, what can I say about this game? It feels unfinished and it pretty much is, the epilogue is going to be a DLC without a set release date and without something else the story feels very surface level and mediocre. The chibi CGs are cute tho. The playtime in my review is a lie, I left the game open for long periods of time on the bg when doing other things.
A troublesome green gremlin... PLEASE AND THANK YOU FOR THE MEAL!
An amazing short romance story that guarantees some tears being shed. The plot is intriguing, art is wonderful and it is a nice game that, gives cosy feelings as you play it. Recommended to play
色情度不足 Not my type 2/5
