"Monster and Snakes 1.1" is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. The story revolves around a man collecting coins and gems while battling snakes and monsters. The gameplay, however, is extremely basic. This is all just a collection of pixelcrap assets, slapped together with Flowlabs with as little effort, talent and skill applied as humanly possible. This truly is a dumpster fire of a game. And I don't say that lightly, I've done a lot of game reviews and seen some truly awful games. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Worse, the developer decided that "up" and "down" arrows on your keyboard will be the way that you move... left and right. Not even an excessive drug habit could cause this kind of bizarre non-conformity in terms of making controls so absolutely useless that the game is barely, if at all playable. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. I'm not sure if the assets are original or flipped... they're horribly mismatched which does imply the developer has embarked on a bit of plagiarism here. To make matters worse, while lazy, low quality pixel "art" has been used, making the game look bad, many elements of the game aren't done with pixelcrap. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game all-time peak player count was only ONE player. That's right, only one person ever played this at a time. When I played this for the purposes of reviewing it, I equalled the peak player count for the game. OUCH. So, should you buy this garbage asset flip? Is this one of the best of the 110,000+ games on Steam? "Monster and Snakes 1.1" is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 14,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.[/quote] This is a little disturbing as the developer indicates they started stalking me and feverishly reading through my reviews... either just obsession with me, or desperation to try find something in one of my other reviews that would somehow change the objectively terrible quality of this failed "game". Creeping on reviewers like this is [b]not okay[/b]. The developer provides a blatantly untrue, libellous lie, a deliberate mistruth, that this reviewer "hates" 2D games. This is simply untrue, indeed, my profile page features a positive review for a 2D game of excellent quality. The developer seeks to lie and spread libel in an attack on this reviewer... which has absolutely zero bearing on the quality of his garbage product. The developer attacks this reviewer in an attempt to divert user attention from his failure and his garbage product. Clearly his ability to stalk me properly is on par with his game development skill - none at all. But more likely he's just choosing to lie. The "developer" argues that I review a lot of games, therefore this game review isn't valid or truthful. Huh. If I changed all my other reviews to positive, would the graphics and gameplay of this crap game suddenly improve? No. The developer seeks any possible angle to throw shade at me personally to discredit my review. You can see what they are trying to do. If this was the only review I have ever written, would that change any of the properties of this game or alter the facts contained in my review? Of course not. [b]My reviews for other games have no bearing on the dismal quality of this failed product[/b]. The developer attacks the review by pushing the absolutely bogus claim that "2D graphics are fine in the era of 3D gaming". This isn't really true, in fact, when developers use 2D graphics when every single gaming PC in the world has a sophisticated 3D accelerator in it is an insult to the gaming industry. Making a 2D game in the era of 3D gaming (which, importantly, kicked off in the mid 1990's with the release of dedicated 3D hardware like the ATI Rage and the 3DFX Voodoo3) is a disservice to gamers. Ignorantly demanding that 3D graphics are worse is a bizarre and dishonest mental contortion. So why has the developer pushed this bizarre and incorrect narrative? Almost always, when a 2D franchise becomes successful, [i]the sequel games adopt 3D graphics.[/i] Because the developers, professional, successful developers, know it's better. Professional AAA publishers [i]don't make 2D games.[/i] 2D graphics are an incredible handicap in the era of 3D gaming. For any 2D game to be considered at all by the 3D gaming population (even consoles can do 3D graphics now!), it has to be truly exceptional. Even then, it would be better in 3D. So the developer makes this perverse and wrong claim... because he personally is incapable of creating 3D visuals. Through lack of budget, or lack of skill or talent, is irrelevant. [b]Because it doesn't matter why the developer did a bad job, what matters is the product that gamers have to evaluate.[/b] If he could have done better, he would have! But he didn't. But the developer never considered what's good for gamers, just himself. This disgusting attitude is made clear by his breach of Valve guidelines. Finally, a bombshell... this garbage is just an asset flip. The developer was so incompetent he took the work of real asset creators, put his own name on it, and called himself a developer. Appalling. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes the objective facts of my review. I have amended my review to more properly warn gamers that this is an asset flip. I cannot recommend this asset flip to anyone.
