Reviews
I am honored to have the spot for the first ever steam user review for this game, and will have to update it once I get some more hours on it. An evil maniac, fergooson is bestowed upon a jetpack and the command of an army of evil babies and other miscreants, by an unknown seemingly greater evil with a very peculiar silhouette residing beneath the surface of this mysterious world where the surface is inhabited by humans so stupid you will be unsure wether or not you want them to like you, and it becomes very clear very quickly that none of them have your best interest in mind, a very bizarre but entertaining piece of social commentary, and the humor is very on the nose with alot of references that made me laugh out loud but at the same time being just obscure enough that it doesnt come off as offensive, brought to life with talented voice acting and expressive animation. The game does not shy away from challenging your mental capacity as a human being, or mocking you for the lack thereof, and will hurt your pride on several occasions, I love this. The gameplay is tight and responsive, but as of right now, does not support controller, i am however glad to see the controls are intuitive and work well with mouse and keyboard. Finch, the playable protagonist is very much alive, he is responding to things as they happen even during gameplay, he will be upset when tricked, or grin smugly when completing a challenging platforming segment. The story seems to be built around the city on the surface, where everyone seems to be out to get your money. And the action seems to be happening in the toilet, where the game operates as some sort of roguelite and a way to earn money in order to proceed on the surface. The game does also feature a day and night cycle that continues even while in the menu, so use your time wisely, as you will learn to fear the night. I will work on the formatting and content of this review as I update it, but right now I want to congratulate the developers on their first commercial project and I am very much looking forward to what they have in store for us, this game reeks of passion, talent, and care for detail. Bra jobb, folkens!
Let me start this off by saying, Im 40, and I kinda live a little distanced to odd humor... But yet here is this beautiful, unnerving, wonderful, weird, and yet to be finished game. I greatly enjoy the main protagonist as he reminds me a bit of Chrono triggers, Glen. The art style reminds me of superjail, and the voices were as if they ripped someone from Adult Swim.. Its on point odd humor. The fighting system is really interesting as its vastly different than any game on my list. Massive plus. The movement mechanics are literally tighter than a clam shell. Ive spent about 5 hours in the game, with 2 of those hours just running around and having fun. Can not wait to see Whats in store whats in store whats really in store... (kinda super lame joke from someoen in the game) Just buy it and play it. Feel enjoyably ashamed.
Good potential and unique world with weird and interesting characters. But so far the game feels a bit too little and repetitive for the full price. Will be looking forward to updates! PS: The first boss is ♥♥♥♥.
HIPA HOPA! Loving it, a very solid early access build with great gameplay + voice acting, has had me laughing at my screen like a goober. I recommend to all and am excited to see what the future holds for Mongrel!! BogOrk Forever xox
I had such high hopes for Mongrel. It definitely looks like my sort of game. It is a run and gun metroidvania with dark (sometimes toilet-style) humor. That being said, I just could not get past the control scheme. For me, metroidvanias are best played with a controller, and Mongrel (at least not at the time of this writing) does not offer good controller support. There are vital controls missing from the controller layout, and what is there, doesn't feel good. It controls alright with a mouse and keyboard, but at times, the mouse and keyboard controls feel just okay at best and clunky at worst. If Mongrel got some good controller support, I believe that it could be an amazing game, especially at its price point; however, in its current state, I cannot recommend it.
The weirdness certainly makes it worth playing. Not since the binding of isaac have you seen this many dead babies and feces in close proximity together. But the actual gameplay is very boring. After the opening sequence that was very fun and weird, you are flushed down into the actual roguelike part where you just have to clear randomly generated rooms of enemies. Those rooms start repeating very fast and so do the enemies with them not having any amount of variety or challenge to them. Movement and gun play are fine, but the small rooms don't actually utilze a moveset where you can sprint faster than doom. Also the range on attaching to flies is too short which makes vertical climbing not flow togther as well as it could. Needs a lot of work but is promissing.
