Judging by the friendly and colorful artwork, I initially thought that Miko Adventures Puffball is a sweet and easy 2D platformer, mostly aimed at casual players. Oh boy, I was really wrong with that! I'm neither good at this genre, nor do I completely suck at it but after trying the game out for a bit, I reached the conclusion that it is really challenging. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2634958565 The game is structured in 14 levels that are composed of several rooms each. You’ll have to go back and forth between these scenes, collecting the keys needed to unlock respective doors that will then open the path to new keys / doors, until you’ll finally be able to reach the exit. Partially a pretty unforgiving platformer due to the level design full of spikes and enemies that constantly jump at you (or attack you in groups), partially having a difficult-to-learn setup due to it’s maze-y nature, the levels clearly require practice, exploration and perseverance. On top of that, you are allowed to make more or less 3 mistakes in one level - each level starts with 3 lives, and while there are spare lives to pick up to replenish the ones you’ve lost (up to max 3 lives), these are encountered pretty rarely. It's not a game meant to be experienced at your own leisure - on the contrary, it's a game in which you have to continuously retry and perfect yourself with every run. It’s aimed at players who enjoy dying over and over again until they make it and who derive satisfaction from accomplishing something after investing a considerable amount of effort. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2634958548 Depending on how well you perform (time, enemies killed, diamonds collected and secrets found), each completed level will get you a bronze / silver / gold medal. There are no Steam-integrated achievements but there are some in-game challenges that push your limits even further (for example, completing a certain level without killing any enemies). The controls are pretty good. I often have issues with the controls when playing platformers, (most of the time I struggle with them in various amounts) but Miko Adventures Puffball is one of the few games I can't complain about. Double jumping is possible, aside from grabbing platform edges during jump or shooting enemies mid-air and these actions are all very responsive. I love how each level feels so individualized, a separate world from the others. Each of them has a unique art style / theme that is different from the rest, with distinctive mechanics, special traps and sometimes even unique enemies. All the environments in the world of Puffball are pleasant and interesting to experience, and the music is also fitting. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2634958598 Miko Adventures Puffball was developed by a single person over the course of several years. The end product is a solid platformer, yet there are many ways to further improve the game. Having an accessible map, or a shop in which you can buy rewards with the diamonds collected (or depending on the medals won) are just a few ideas (I’d love to be able to increase the number of life slots that Miko can have, or maybe being able to upgrade the weapons to stronger ones). But even in its state, it’s a game worth checking out for those who like challenging platformer games. Going through all the levels will probably take on average 4-5 hours, while experienced players (or rather those that already know where to go) should be able to complete the game in around 1.5-2h (the levels are moderately long, taking 5-10 mins each).
Warning: Asset Flip!
Miko Adventures Puffball is a Digital Homicide style asset flip, or what Valve calls a "Fake Game". The "developer" paid for/pirated a few Unity asset store packs, dumped them all in a blender by copying + pasting someone else's GDevelop platformer tutorial, and submitted it to Valve as if they're real game developers. The game assets are stolen from a number of places and used without credit (it's unclear if they have permission to use the assets at all but I guess we have to give these plagiarists the benefit of the doubt). Here's another game with some of the same assets as proof this is an asset flip: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1199150/Raccoon_The_Orc_Invasion/ Two notable criteria for what makes an asset flip instead of legitimate use of stock assets are whether those assets comprise the majority of the game, and whether the "developer" properly credited the people who created most of the assets in the game. This game fails both of those tests. The "developers" here didn't credit any of the artists and real, actual game developers who created the assets here, so this is plagiarism, as well as cash grab shovelware. Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the video game construction kit/toolset, GDevelop. This is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur/unskilled developers as it doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Miko Adventures Puffball has the laughable, eye-watering price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
原价37块的游戏,实际不到1块钱的隐藏捆绑包,游戏非常可爱的艺术风格,扎实的游戏玩法和许多小细节。它比我预期的要好得多。
A little wacky, very cutesy, and a great way to introduce your kids to the wonderful world of 2d platformers. It's on the easy side but that's good for the kids and I found joy in trying to 100% each level. A solid 2d platformer with some very cute graphics and simple gameplay that will appeal to younger audiences. Fairly easy as platformers go (although it gets tougher). 14 levels with nice scenery. Full review at: https://thegamehoard.com/2021/09/24/miko-adventures-puffball-pc/ Miko Adventures Puffball asks you to explore its maze-like stages cautiously, but because Miko controls as well as he does and the hazards and enemies are placed just so, doing so feels like a rather relaxed procession of decent challenges rather than something slow or laborious. You always feel in control but the danger ahead, while not pressing, keeps you lightly involved as you have to make sure you can approach it without getting hurt. Collectibles and special goals make the small set of levels more interesting to engage with, so while some ideas like the use of the mouse feel too simple, Miko Adventures Puffball provides a light bit of difficulty to spice up an otherwise fairly tame but relaxed platformer.
Super cute artstyle with solid gameplay and many small details. It got far harder then I expected. It's good fun for a few hours!
It's a challenge! Super fun but not only that. The graphics are so adorable and the mechanics are smooth. I love the fact you can use fire balls to get rid of the enemies. This is a fun game that I can see anyone enjoy.
Miko Adventures Puffball is a cite platformer game with challenging levels. The music ad backgrounds are very cute! I was surprised that you can hang on ledges.
A great casual platformer to play in your free time. I have found each level challenging enough to make me re-try it a couple of times before beating it (with the "bronze" medal), but also casual enough to not find it as frustrating as other platformers. Plus you can always go back and try to 100% complete it if you want to increase the difficulty. I also love how cheerful the music is. I'll definitely be playing more of this game in the future!
An exemplary example of wonderful level design and incredible reward It's crazy to think that ONE person put this game together themselves. It's truly a labor of love and grand effort, as well as a wonderful love letter to the classic platforming challenges that have come before it. The game itself feels like a whimsical trip to Disney Land coupled with tight platforming and narrow escapes and creative hazards that keep you on edge, yet all within an undeniably cute shell. Don't let the cute looks fool you, because the challenge is real, and it is addicting. This game presents a similar narrow victory path as Dark Souls, and it's equally as rewarding when you actually overcome a great obstacle by a thin margin or when you finally complete a level. I'm not a fan of most collectathon games but I found myself actually wanting to go out of my way to the to find everything that I could, albeit the real challenge was to try to just make it to the end of each level with my life intact. I also greatly appreciate the stamina for attacking. You can't just spam attack endlessly, you need to actually plan wisely ...or you'll die by the time an en enemy get to you. All in all, Any one with an appreciation for all that is cute will find joy in the charming aesthetic. Classic gamers who favor tight, thoughtful platforming will also be pleased with the well thought out level design as they unlock paths and backtrack in each level to discover what feels like a present as you crack open hidden secrets along the way. To conclude, this is a great game with heart, tightly wrapped up with great attention to detail and presenting a fun and rewarding challenge, a lot of love went in and a lot of love should be received for it. This is Coriander Games first work so I'm really to eager to see what future work holds!
