[h1][u] Midnight Shift could definitely be worse [/u][/h1]
[h3]Shatter Glass games shows us an immense amount of promise in this first outing. You play as Johnny, a casual dude with a broken car who very reluctantly decided to take the bus to work. He probably should've just stayed home.[/h3]
You'll quickly find that this game has a unique art style, and the fact it's all put together by one person is even more impressive. I love the way the NPCs look and the world is interact-able. The advertising on the items in the store are funny and the dialogue isn't half bad, (despite some typos.) I [b]REALLY[/b] enjoyed the music, (scored nicely by [i]Karl Casey[/i]), and the sound design was simple but effective. Every time the doors dinged open, I jumped, and the occasional twig snapping outside made it impossible to focus on the tasks I was given. The game does a good job of building tension.... but only really towards the last half.
This game will give you a lot of free time to wander back and forward, confused as to what you're meant to do next. You'll find yourself cleaning a spot on the floor, wandering around for 5 minutes looking for the next one, only to find out that you had to walk in a certain place to trigger certain events. The comedy felt out of place, but I welcomed it. That dance at the end had me rolling. The killer was okay, but a little goofy looking, and I found the AI to be either really dumb or really smart. (he'd get caught on a garbage can one second, but then kick open a door I was about to lock right after.) I suppose the unpredictability made the final encounter a little more nerve wracking, but it ended up more in the realm of trial and error. Thankfully the game gives you a checkpoint right before this encounter happens. The gun-play could definitely be worked on, and the killer is a bullet sponge, but honestly, Shatter Glass didn't have to add combat. the fact that it's here is enough for me to give it a point in it's favour.
I enjoyed my time with Midnight Shift. It's definitely not perfect but I was seriously expecting something considerably worse. Do I think it's worth the $3.00? Sure! There's a lot to love here, and if you're a fan of [i]Chillas Art[/i] games, you'll probably have a good time!
