Reviews
I only bought this for two reasons; catgirl, and because my friend recommended it to me. Having said that, Memento of Spring provided me much more than I could have ever expected. I found all characters and their dialogues very entertaining and consistent throughout the entire story, which was surprisingly much longer than I had anticipated at an estimated 10 hours. Plenty of laughs were to be had, and the narrative and presentation made it surprisingly easy to get immersed. The background music is primarily piano tracks that do a superb job at maintaining the tone of the story and scenarios without being intrusive. It's a shame the soundtrack isn't available as a separate DLC (as of writing this review, that is). Overall I definitely recommend Memento of Spring. It has enough story content to justify its price, and moreso if it goes on sale. Definitely a hidden gem of a story that I fear will go overlooked simply because of its relatively simple-looking artstyle. If I had anything to compare it to, I'd say it's like a lighter and funnier fault:milestone one. Definitely worth looking into if you enjoy visual novels, or want a good lengthy story.
Introduction
Memento of Spring is a simple, comedic, all-age friendly, slice-of-life visual/kinetic novel that features an all female cast that focuses on the characters and its plot(sorry guys, no ecchi-like stuff, so don't even bother if you're into that sort of thing). As a person who's never read or seen a slice-of-life anime or novel, I got to say, it was a pretty solid and somewhat relaxing experience for myself to enjoy.
Story: NO SPOILERS
You take place in the perspective of two different characters in the visual/kinetic novel. The main character of the story is Juliane von Westerholz, a young sorceress who's know for having a reputation against her tutors and caretakers from a magical academy who calls herself the "Princess of Calamity". She's often taken care by a person named, Amalie, a grown up with the responsibility of Juliane's desires. She's then greeted by Autumn, a sorceress from the magical academy who is a substitute for a tutor from the academy who couldn't attend due to various issues. After a few days, Juliane shows Autumn and Amalie her magic sorceress skills. After doing so, she's then travelled to another world from far, far away. After completing the game, within 10 hours, I felt like I was pretty satisfied with the game. For a game developer's first game, this was a pretty solid storyline for a 15-30 hour game. However, there were some minor peeves that I felt towards the end of the game. I felt like that some of the main characters (two of them in particular) don't have an appearance. One of them has a physical appearance but it's only for a very brief moment (fortunately it’s in the gallery, so you know what she looks like!). Also, even though the the game's is run on multiple save data as game progress, the visual novel is chapter-based. After finishing the game for the first time, with no intention to use the other extra save data slots, you can't go back to a specific chapter you'd want to read. It's a minor thing to me, but for others, it may seem bothersome to replay the game in order to read the specific chapter you want to read. I also didn't feel like there was much comedy into the story, not that's a bad thing, everyone has a different sense of humour. Also, don't expect a lot of action, this isn't an action-based visual novel. I'd also like to mention there's no player choices as stated in the store page. This might disappoint fans who are more involved with player choice stories. But, for starters, this is a great example of visual novels to start of as well as a decently lengthed slice-of-life visual novel. Overall, pretty solid story although my stated peeves might be realised by people who are really into visual novels.
Visuals
The game is made in Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine, a free engine for developing visual and kinetic novels. The visuals look really, really fantastic. Some of the characters even look really cute, especially when they're showing an expression not normal to their regular personality. The background places each look different and even feels different to the reader when the time of day or night is different. There's also one point where the sky looks really, really vivid (that scene is unlockable in the gallery!). There's also a gallery where the game saves certain scenes from the story, a very nice feature when you're currently or finished playing the game. Overall, the characters are all adorable and the background settings are a nice touch to the visuals.
Soundtrack
The music is mainly composed by a piano. And it's very soothing to listen to it as you play the game. It's very relaxing and nice to listen to. You can even listen to the music from the main menu if you just want to listen to the music without playing the game (although you can only listen to the music while running the game... so... eh...?Nvm). However, after a few minutes it may get a bit repititive and somewhat stuck to your ears, which for me, has only been on some occasions (which isn't a bad thing). Overall, very nice music but can't really listen to them unless you're in-game and may get repetitive.
Conclusion
Memento of Spring is a good "memento" (LOL. not sry for the lame joke) to your collection of visual/kinetic novels, anime games and games in general. This visual novel is a recommended try (imo) for a person who's new to visual/ kinetic novels or to the slice of life genre. The characters are great, there's no ecchi scenes, the visuals are beautiful and the music is very soothing. My peeves, as stated in this review, shouldn't discourage you from picking up this beautiful game to add to your collection.
Shoutout
Special thanks to the kind people at Bright Onion Studios for giving us exclusive access to the game for us to review.
Pros
+Beautiful Visuals +Soothing Music +Great Story +Solid gameplay length (may vary for different players on different playthroughs) +Cute and adorable characters characters
Cons
-Music can be somewhat repititive for extended amounts of time -Some characters not getting enough visual time -Music can be only be played "in-game" -No Player made choices, which can turn off die-hard visual novel gamers -Can't read the specific chapter you want after your first playthrough on one save file unless you use multiple save files to read the desired chapter. A good memento to start spring, Interesting characters and story.
First of all I'm gonna say I wasn't expecting a lot from this visual novel, I was expecting a decent read of around 5-8 hours of story. Oh how wrong I was that it turns out it had quite a lot of text. I'm gonna be telling the positives and negatives on it subjectively of course and will give an overall summary of my experience. Spoilers:
it's an okay game

Characters 7/10
There aren't a lot of many characters in this game which could be a good or bad thing depending on what kind of story it is, in this case the story felt lacking not because that they use few characters but the fact that they didnt make each character unique enough for me personally. Some of the characters felt like their roles are just way too small and are just there for the heck of it. The point of view of the first I'd call main character especially, since she barely plays a role in the story after the first 3 hours by my read time. I'd have enjoyed it more if we were playing from juliane's perspective. I do have my favorites though which are Juliane, Hitomi, and Yukari in that order. Juliane doesn't pull her punches when she insults someone and that is just a trait that I really like, especially by the end of the game when she shows character development. Hitomi doesn't get much spotlight in the story but I really do like her sour but realistic attitude unlike most of the other girls. For Yukari I like her a lot at first but then it slowly dwindles down as she interacts more with Lily in the second half, she might've been my number one for the fact that she wears a maid outfit alone lol.
Graphics 6/10
The artstyle of the game is cute and really just fits the overall story and atmosphere of the game, I have a gripe about it that the jaws are a bit pointy but that's just me. some of the backgrounds are pretty nice and some of the CGs are also nice, a typical moege graphics but not that I mind.
Music 6/10
The music in this game is really good..... if not for the fact that it only has a few soundtracks. I'd have rated this higher but for a game this long to only have a few soundtracks, it gets repetitive and also boring at times. Don't get me wrong the soundtrack is still amazing and fun to listen to.
Story 6/10
Now for my main gripe of the whole game, the story is comedy and slice of life I know what I was getting into.... but the real story only happens when its the beginning of the game and the last hour of the game. The other 18 hours were basically fluff and getting to know the characters and them interacting. Maybe because I only cared about a few characters that's why I rate the story quite low but I had gripes with the pacing of the game. The character introductions got a bit too long for me. To me, this whole game is just a prologue of what's to come, a prologue to Juliane's adventures. While it is a whole lot of fluff which I'm not a fan of, I still enjoy it enough since I like Juliane as a character. I hope that the developers would make a sequel to this which is a bit more adventurous and talk a bit more about the magic aspect of the game.
Overall 6/10
First of all I do think this is a solid game if you just want to chill back and have fun, I probably had a bad time mostly because I was playing this game for long periods of time at once (like more than 8 hours) which might have reduced the enjoyment of the game. I'd probably have scored the story a bit higher if I took my time with the game but I usually play visual novels in long periods of time like that. The only character memorable for me personally is Juliane though which I'm still kinda sad we didn't play in her perspective. Overall cute characters, cute artstyle, nice music, an okay-ish story if you like slice of life and comedy, be sure to check this out.
This turned out to be quite a fun read. Juliane's behaviour is quite unique in its way. Just because your smart doesn't mean you can act as your above everybody else. I knew I was on to something when I purchased a certain story advertised for catering to the fond of spoiled princesses. I was not wrong, Juliane has now forever been immortalized into the proud collection of my favorite characters. Overall this was an excellent novel, every component of it was detailled, thorough and expertly crafted. The characters were the favorite part for me, the entirety of the cast is very memorable and very enjoyable to read. These characters are also quite well designed, and have lifelike flaws and virtues, well rounded and appealingly complex. Quite a few surprises about why they act in a certain way will become apparent. This being a visual novel, is quite dialogue heavy, which I enjoyed. Clever and witty conversations are the order of the day, and my free time became that much better for it. It has genuinely hilarious jokes, and all too often I found myself giggling at its somewhat dark humor. The cast is all female, which I found enjoyable and maybe you will too. Many of these characters are consistently introduced later as the story advances, which means you will always have interesting new characters enter the story. Also, note that this is a Kinetic novel, which means it features no choices. It is also not a romance novel, yuri novel or anything of the sort (which is good, given the age of the main character). Truth be told, the story is so good on its own that I did not miss these dating elements on the slightest. Overall I thoroughly recommend this novel, it gave me more wonderful things to entertain my mind with. I am thankful to the authors for providing me with this lovely experience. 5/5 stars, all the way through.
hat a great visual novel! Simple layout but great in story telling, smoothing original soundtracks that fits every moment of the story and the artstyle and backgrounds is beautifully well done, detailed and in high quality too. Very cute and relatable characters, If your the type of person who loves visual novels then put this on your list.
Prelude & Review Information
Be advised, this review contains spoilers for the game that won't be censored. If proceeding without having played the VN, then it should be noted that this game does garner my recommendation. However, that isn't without a few stipulations. Remember, this VN does not include any choices, and as such, no replay ability. Also, this VN, as properly advertised, is catering to the slice of life type of story, with less dramatic reactions and outlooks. People may view the story as boring or dragging on as a result. Be wary of buying if you don't like the aforementioned traits. However, if none of the above applies to you, then rejoice: you've stumbled upon quite the game.
Now The Real Review Begins
Visual Novels can really be surmised in three categories: the UI, the story, and the music. If all three work in tandem well enough, they orchestrate a beautiful symphony.
UI
The UI, what every VN has and needs. Made in the Ren'Py engine, the trademark engine of most VNs, the settings and options are all there. Fast forwarding, quick saves and loads, the whole deal is included. The only thing that I could do to benefit it would be to create a save every arc (arcs denoted by an achievement), but that's a minor gripe and there isn't anything to complain about. The illustrations for the UI are also quite nice and colorful, in the same vein as the CGs and BGs.
Story
Let's focus on the first achievement, when Juliane first uses her magic. Depending on the reader, it may take a while to get here. In all honesty, it did feel monotonous. Whether intentional or not, it's my belief that aided the story. Upon the music Princess of Calamity playing, it felt mesmerizing. After, blinded with a flash of light, I was suddenly whisked away to what initially seemed like a different VN entirely. The settings and characters changed but actually it was really fun! Of the new cast, Hitomi by far seemed like the most likable character. Maybe that speaks about me as a person but the way she was written is such a good combination of sarcasm and bitter humor. For a while, I didn't see why this was combined with the original magic universe, and finally, upon the discovery of Juliane's teleportation to this universe, it clicked. Transdimensional interactions between sorceresses and local store owners in a bog standard town. The highlights of their time here were Hitomi and Lily bonding over Yukari's fleeting logic, Hitomi's arguments with Juliane, and pretty much all of Tsukiko's interactions with the group. If you didn't get it by now, Hitomi is pretty great and Tsukiko, given more dialogue, is probably just as great. However, on the other side of the portal, I just didn't feel it was up to par. Before transporting and after, the story didn't feel as good as it did during the middle. Honestly, the end arc with Lily transporting to the other universe felt unneeded. Certainly, the surprise that Lily was pulled forcibly to that side was interesting and we also got the backstory of Juliane and finally the full name of the Academy, but there really was no point to it. That isn't to say the final bits of dialogue with Juliane's gratitude didn't feel nice. I believe, that with proper voice acting, that would've been a genuinely heartwarming moment for our Calamity Princess.
Music
I had scoured the music gallery before playing the game. Initially, I was wary that the music of each looped too quickly and some of the songs carried a similar melody. That's also the reason Princess of Calamity was the best track of the bunch. It was played on at integral moments and each time, it was distinct. Overall, the music was fine but nothing to write home about besides that in particular. Note, it didn't detract from the story as it did loop well and fit thematically. The only reason I'm indifferent is because outside of this game I wouldn't be ecstatic about it.
Final Thoughts
Yes, this is a good game. Despite all the complaints I could wage against it, it's everything that it advertised and more. Don't go into it expecting another Steins;Gate, that isn't this. This is a comedic and lighthearted story of a gluttonous princess with an appetite that can't be satiated. Play at a pace which you can enjoy as it's a bit slow. I hope to see another VN in this universe, possibly with a more dramatic edge.
Juliane is my spirit animal! Interesting story, I loved the art of most of the characters. The idea about sending people into a different world would have been done better, like I really wanted to see their reaction of more modern things, like cars, trains and so own, not just manga ... I really wish that the developers will gave us more of these characters, but I dont think that will going to happen since the ending, Still it is a nice little kinetic novel, nothing groundbreaking, also a bit short, and has some repeating stuff over and over, but overall, I would give it a 7/10
