memento mori
Adventures of 2012. Colonel Ostankovovich, the commander of a special police department in St. Petersburg and the man who risked his honesty by swearing that no item in the Hermitage would be lost under his command, receives a report of a brief alarm failure at the Hermitage . He suspects something happened. In order not to lose his reputation, he contacts Maxim Durand through Larisa Svetlova. Because of his past, Maxim is at his disposal and has to help him. (Editor) In search of the stolen paintings, Max and Lara (mostly alone) visit the Hermitage, an old library, Interpol headquarters in Lyon, the residence in Scotland and more. It is played in classic point & click style. Very classic! Without help, without a guide and without hints. For a game that's over 10 years old and that has so many players, that's pretty unusual. I only found 8 players who struggled through the game, only 2 of them marked it positively. Now my evaluation after 4 hours is clearly negative. Not because it's bad, but because of the gameplay. In order to get further you need triggers and that often means just walking back and forth, repeatedly in and out or clicking everything that is possible over and over again. It's a shame because the story is very well done. Clearly negative.
This is another game where I wish there was a mixed rating. This "enhanced" version doesn't deserve a positive rating, but the game itself doesn't deserve a negative either. I got the game around 2014, played it for 1 hour and quit.... 2024 decided to give it and go and try to finish it, and I did. Memento Mori is a point and click adventure game where choices matter. The game has 6 different endings, but I'm not going to replay it 6 times to see all of them. Once I saw that choices, and 'reactions' to characters mattered I followed a guide to get the best possible ending.
This game is NOT worth 13$, that includes the issues, and the fact it's a 12 year old game. Wait for a big sale.
Memento Mori came out in 2008, so 16 years ago, but this is the "Enhanced" version so it's 12 years old. Though to be fair the fact it's a 12 year old game and there's only 168 reviews as of me writing this it's obvious this game didn't gain a lot of traction in the first place. It's not a horrible game, but this version is really wonky and had a lot of issues. I was planning on giving this a negative review but changed my mind after half way through the game. The game started out really boring I honestly didn't think I was going to finish it, the graphics aren't the best for an "enhanced" version, and the characters movements are really wonky, to the point where it was sometimes broken. I had a lot of issues playing as Max and him not wanting to walk up or down stairs properly, or the wonky things characters would do when trying to move them around. There was quite a few times where playing as Max I would click on him to do something, and he would just 'moon walk' in place for a little bit, and I'd have to keep retrying/clicking for him to do something. Like in one scene I was trying to get him to turn on a lamp, he legit ran back and forth for about 30 seconds, then just stopped. So I attempted it again, and he just moon walked for a bit, then went off on the complete opposite side of the lamp and turned it on. I also had some issues where both characters didn't want to go do what they were supposed to, or puzzles broke so I would have to either leave the scene and come back, or reload to fix it. A specific puzzle with Lara, the puzzle would act like it was 'open' but show as shut, so I would have to exit the puzzle and get back in it. Another 'issue' for something I needed for a different puzzle, I had to exit the screen and go back in so the 'thing that needed to happen.... happened'. There's a LOT of instances where stupid small things would happen, it got to be annoying, and a couple of instances were game breaking so I would have to reload. As for the story, I was bored until about half way through the game, then I got kind of excited to see what would happen next. I really liked how they did the ending, and I want to see more, but there's no real reason for me to replay again.
Genre
Ein Point & Click Adventure
Story
Was steckt hinter diesem Mysteriösen Raub?
Gameplay
Some puzzle/actions didnt make sense, but the story was sad. i still cant blv what happened at the end. and must to say, the cinematic parts were 10/10,
It's alright but doesn’t leave me with anything worth remembering. Well, except for the curveball ending. To be fair, they didn’t just create a twist ending that is unrelated to the rest of the story. They certainly committed the rest of the story to the weird ending. But I feel like the end of the game doesn’t match the universe of the game as it was in the beginning. I’ve seen other stories that being grounded and end with supernatural but those stories usually build up the supernatural gradually. But in this story, everything is entirely grounded in reality until the last minute of them game. For a minute there I thought the game was going to pull the “it was all in his head the whole time” routine but no the game is serious about the magic. But it just doesn’t feel right due to lack of proper build up. By the way, the notion that this game has multiple endings and that your choices throughout the game determines which one you get is just nonsense. It’s a gimmick, they are all the same ending with a slightly different voice over. Here’s the formula for all endings Max gets happy/neutral/bad + Lara gets happy/neutral/bad ending and with that you can just imagine even better endings than what the game has, don’t waste your time re-playing to see the other endings.
Well for playing this for 13 hours-ish on the steam deck actually felt like I was actually playing it for 6 to 7-ish hours instead to me, the other half of the hours is because I had to go back and forth between figuring out something myself in the game first and then maybe considering looking at somebody else's game walkthrough to figure out what to do next, because either something was overlooked or something would blend in the game to find that I didn't see it or think about what to do next sometimes to continue on. Other than that, I do think this is a decent, nice, 3D, point/click game with the story. There was also one thing I did notice that "SMPTE color bars" would flashbang my vision when there was supposed to be a cutscene to watch everytime that would not load at all to watch on the steam deck for me to know other bits of the story that I didn't know about until I found out from somebody else's playthrough instead for help in the game. Also also, I had to turn down the volume when I paused the game to do something because the random music and mumbling would get annoying to listen to for a while. Other than that this is a okay game.
Boring and confusing.
