I have held of on this review for a while because of how long I've had the game, and don't let that 602 hours fool you, this is my most played game by far as most of it came from before the steam version was available and I've been playing off and on since the latter part of the closed beta. I am a legendary founder from 2012 with at least one mech of every chassis in this game (though nowhere near every variant), excluding any new ones from the last couple months. This is mostly aimed at people who don't know the series and is more a stream of consciousness than anything else. Mechwarrior Online is a live service hellscape combined with some of the worst, most head scratching design choices in the history of video games masking one of the best experiences you can have in video games. Everything that happens in the menus outside of the mechlab is terrible and the first user experience here is a nightmare. From there, the moment you start actually playing the game, you are hit with ghost heat and the lack of melee and the game careens downhill. And on top of all of that, it has tank controls, which I'm sure most of you hate. It's a really, REALLY rough start, and has been for more than a decade. Stick with it though. The community here is incredible and once you get past the bad choices of a couple prior devs punishing you for making mathematically optimal builds by implementing a system with almost no user notification beyond "LOOK IT UP AND GIT GUD", the rest of the game is a masterpiece. This is what mech combat is supposed to be, and the mechlab in this game is the best in the series, or any mech game for that matter. You have a level of control over your mech's performance vastly exceeding any tuner racing game in existence, and because of those tank controls (which have been a thing in mechwarrior going back to the first game), it's WAY easier to hit your opponents than it would be otherwise because you can reliably predict where they are going. This is a cerebral game with a tiny bit of muscle memory instead of the other way around. MWO is worth the BS. It's the pinnacle of the genre right now outside of Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries and maybe Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries or Mechwarrior 5 Clans. If the multiplayer aspect is intimidating, go play those games first. Mechwarrior 5 is a mess of it's own and also fantastic. Final Score is 9/10, but could easily be 9.9 out of 10 if the devs got out of their own way. P.S. One piece of advice. In the early going, grind to your first mech and then look up a build, earn it, and play that one mech for a while before trying to buy more. The money trap in MWO is the way you erode C-Bills tinkering with builds, so learn the basics before you start to try to make your own setup.

addictive old school mech war with a great community and lots of events
It's a great game with a great mythos and community!
Very fun once you understand its not a insta ki** game and how the builds work per weight class and how teamwork and comms are needed, but i will say although im leaving a positive review its strictly for the deticated players who remain that make it worth it to even continue playing. i recently got this game and it took me 170 hrs o get all the o.p and off style niche mechs and legendary/hero mechs through events, this game needs a revamp on a new engine with new maps, to make it easier mech warrior online needs to to be transitioned to mech warrior 5 for the engine and its physics and first person locked to a strict pvp playlist on the new revised mech warrior 5 maps, i can get excited for a build and as soon as i enter a game or say "i just built this ' the community immediately tells me the most o.p loadout for any givin mech. but then again i guess thats what happens over the span of 10+ years and not much additional content besides the occasional new mech, i got a love for first person mech games, pirahnna games if you read this we need a UE5 version with new maps, updated cockpits and weapon types hardpoints and some new unique mechs, over all i give this a 6/10. its not pay to win. its not impossible to learn. but the maps and game modes are repetitive and the dark gloomy blocky maps are a constant reminder of how games just wont last forever before the playerbase gives up. and even worse the gut feeling of the devs giving up. good hunting mech warriors.
Ho boy, this is a game alright. There's a lot of moving parts and it can be daunting at first. At its heart, this is a vehicular shooter with high customization where team play is king. Hitboxes are granular, you shoot a certain part, that part is what breaks. What weapons or systems are loaded into each part can be customized based on load limits, slot limits, hardpoints, and the type of mech (battlemech or omnimech). It's a lot, but it's hugely rewarding when you get things working just right. The real money cost of mech packs is pretty pricey, but they run events four times a year for like six weeks each event and they give out tons of free mechs, currency, parts, and so on. Also you don't need the real money mechs, it's totally viable to play with just game-currency purchases. Usually the paid hero mechs have some funky mechanic that makes them stand out, but not in a head and shoulders "this is just better" sort of way. Most of the time. Arrow-IVs are the most prominent example of a real money thing that negatively impacts the state of the game, but hopefully they get some balance sorted out soon or expand the stable of mechs that can equip them to include free mechs. If you do decide to buy a mech pack, do it through the MWO website instead of Steam's store. Seriously. Definitely during an event is the best time to pick up the game, there's also more new players during these times which makes the learning experience a touch smoother than smashing your face against sweaties. I would also recommend looking at a youtuber like TTB for build recommendations until you get a handle on what makes sense, he regularly posts videos with very effective builds, often on the free mechs that are awarded from events.
Made a family of four disappear with my first LRM salvo. It was a beautiful sight.
I love the diverse mechs and the weapons of the mechs. The mech walkers are very good in this game.
