I've played this for quite a long time, and genuinely went from being one of the many, MANY fodder players that just exist to be killed to being a threat on the field, at least half the time. HOWEVER With the matchmaking being so abysmal, and a good amount of the remaining players (new or otherwise) refusing to rub their two braincells together to do anything other than press W+M1, you are either trapped on a team with people that WILL die and you WILL lose... or trapped on a team with people that steamroll over the competition because there was no chance for the other team to even push back, and at that point the win doesn't even feel good. EXTREMELY RARELY will I get a match (that can take upwards of 5 minutes to get into even with the recommended weight class) where it was down to the last few guys on both teams, and both sides are playing to the best of their ability (which can still be extremely poor). Oh yeah, I almost forgot; there's the WONDERFUL Pay-To-Win weapons of THE RAILGUN, and ARROW IV! I wish that Arrow IV worked how it did in tabletop...
old battletech fans will love it, mostly. maybe it has a learning curve. some say it is pay to win. when they drop new content behind a paywall they tend to make it stronger then scale it back. then when it is balanced it becomes available for in game currency. the game is outside of its service life, and it still works. it is free, and they give everything away. play this game

MechWarrior Online Legends is a large-scale multiplayer mech combat game developed and published by Piranha Games Inc., built around the enduring BattleTech universe. Rather than pursuing the fast-paced style of traditional shooters, the game embraces a more methodical approach that emphasizes strategy, teamwork, and the immense power of giant war machines. Players step into the role of elite MechWarriors, piloting heavily armed BattleMechs across a variety of battlefields while competing for supremacy in the Inner Sphere. The result is a multiplayer experience that remains unique even years after its original release. One of the game's strongest qualities is its dedication to authenticity. Every BattleMech feels massive, dangerous, and mechanically complex. Movement carries a sense of weight, and each decision on the battlefield has consequences. Heat management, armor distribution, weapon placement, and ammunition conservation all play critical roles during combat. Unlike many action games where success is determined primarily by quick reflexes, MechWarrior Online rewards planning, positioning, and battlefield awareness. This creates a more tactical and immersive experience that captures the fantasy of commanding a giant combat machine. The progression system offers a satisfying sense of growth. New players receive access to several BattleMechs that allow them to learn the fundamentals without requiring an immediate financial investment. As players participate in matches and earn currency, they can unlock additional machines, purchase upgrades, and expand their collection. The game encourages long-term engagement through a constant cycle of earning rewards, refining builds, and experimenting with new strategies. This progression feels meaningful because every new mech or modification directly affects battlefield performance. Customization is arguably the feature that gives the game its greatest depth. Players can modify weapon loadouts, adjust armor allocations, unlock pilot skills, and personalize their mechs both functionally and visually. The amount of flexibility available is impressive, allowing players to create highly specialized builds suited to different combat roles. Some machines excel at long-range engagements, while others are designed for close-quarters brawling or missile support. This extensive customization system ensures that players can tailor their experience to match their preferred playstyle, while also providing countless opportunities for experimentation. Combat encounters are intense and rewarding because of the game's detailed damage mechanics. Rather than relying on a simple health bar, individual mech components can be damaged or destroyed. Weapons can be disabled, ammunition can explode, and critical systems can fail under sustained fire. This layered damage model introduces a level of tactical decision-making rarely found in multiplayer shooters. Skilled players can target specific sections of enemy mechs to neutralize threats efficiently, making every engagement feel dynamic and strategically engaging. Visually, MechWarrior Online succeeds in presenting an impressive collection of BattleMechs that showcase the scale and power of the BattleTech setting. The machines are highly detailed, and the sound design reinforces their mechanical presence with heavy footsteps, powerful weapon blasts, and explosive destruction. While some graphical elements reveal the game's age, the overall presentation remains effective because it focuses on atmosphere and immersion rather than flashy effects. The battlefields provide a convincing backdrop for large-scale mechanized warfare and help reinforce the game's distinctive identity. The free-to-play structure is handled reasonably well, especially compared to many modern online games. Optional purchases and mech packs are available for players who want to accelerate progression or expand their collection, but the game also provides opportunities to earn valuable rewards through regular events and participation. Dedicated players can gradually build an impressive roster without feeling completely restricted by monetization. This balance helps maintain accessibility while still supporting ongoing development. The game's greatest challenge is its steep learning curve. New players must invest time in understanding the many systems that govern mech performance and combat effectiveness. Concepts such as heat efficiency, weapon synchronization, armor optimization, and tactical positioning can initially feel overwhelming. The game demands patience and commitment, and players looking for immediate action may find the early experience difficult. However, those who take the time to learn its mechanics will discover one of the deepest and most rewarding multiplayer mech games available. Overall, MechWarrior Online Legends delivers a compelling blend of simulation, strategy, customization, and competitive multiplayer combat. Its dedication to authentic mech warfare, extensive customization options, and tactical gameplay make it a standout title within its niche. Although the learning curve and slower pacing may not appeal to everyone, fans of giant robots, military strategy, and team-based combat will find a rich and rewarding experience that continues to hold its own in the multiplayer landscape.
