Marvel rivals, alongside Deadlock, is one of the best hero-shooter style games on the market, but that doesn't mean it doesn't come with it's own set of downsides and issues. Gameplay, I'm completely happy with. The game is snappy, responsive, and there's nothing I could say that wouldn't effectively be opinion or preference. 9.5/10, very VERY good. Sound and art is fine too. I'm not the biggest fan of how some characters look, but again, that's entirely preference and this is a review, not an opinion-rant. However, the main issue I have with Marvel Rivals is it's addiction to FOMO mechanics when it comes to skins. A hero shooter lives and dies by it's skins, honestly. Look at games like TF2. If nobody could customize, or their only options without having played for hundreds or thousands of hours was just the gibus? It wouldn't have the status it has today. Overwatch is similar, in that skins are the lifeblood of what drives most players to play certain characters. Customization is a HUGE part of expression, and in a hero shooter, expression is almost (keyword, almost) as important as the gameplay itself. So why, in God's good name, do they lock costumes behind time-gated paywalls? I get it, you want to encourage people to come back and play often, but sometimes even $10 isn't in the cards, and that means you will NEVER AGAIN get the chance to unlock that skin ever again. My suggestion, and it's been this since season 2, is that old season passes should remain purchasable at a markup. $10 for current season, $20 for a past season. That way it's accessible, even if more pricey, and if someone joins right now, there's dozens of skins they will never have access to, ever. That's not fair to new players, nor is it fair to vets who took breaks, or anyone who hasn't played the game endlessly. $10 for current pass, $20 for old passes is more than fair, it encourages people to do the same thing of playing the game more regularly and buying passes consistently, but it alieviates the punishment of having taken a few months off to play other games, or because health issues got in the way, or whatever the reason may be. It allows content that is STILL IN THE GAME to be purchased without punishing those who bought it at it's release date. It's the best of both worlds, the company gets access to more funds from players who want to spend money but can't because there's no avenue to spend said money, and players who have been playing and continue to play religiously still pay the same price, a "discounted" $10. I would GLADLY buy $100 worth of season passes right this moment if the ability to purchase them was ACCESSIBLE, but the skins I want come from passes long gone, some even before I really got into the game. So that's just money they don't get, and skins I can't access despite being willing to pay a premium for said skins.
