About

A short story of about 50 minutes awaits you! I hope you enjoy it.Don't think of this project as something that will seriously scare you — it wasn’t intended to be a terrifying horror game, but rather more of an experiment or a fun little joke!

You receive a job from a dealer and learn that a group of archaeologists has discovered an ancient tomb in an abandoned mine near the city! Now you must get inside and steal the ancient artifacts to sell them.

You will have to explore the forest surroundings and the tomb to find anything valuable. Since you are an experienced thief, you have an active skill called "Thief’s Instinct." It highlights tracks and important items! Keep that in mind!

Pretty Good graphics and surround sound completely immerse you in the eerie atmosphere of this mysterious place!
Mara isn’t your typical first-person indie horror. You won’t find tons of loud jumpscares here. I wanted to create a small, interesting, dark, and sometimes funny story, so I focused more on the overall atmosphere rather than fear.

Mara is a compact first-person horror adventure developed and published by Nick Abrams. Rather than trying to compete with lengthy survival horror experiences, it embraces the idea of being a short atmospheric journey that can be completed in roughly fifty minutes. The game casts players as a skilled thief hired by a mysterious dealer to infiltrate an ancient tomb hidden within an abandoned mine after archaeologists uncover its existence. The objective is simple on paper—steal priceless artifacts and escape—but the mysterious setting gradually transforms what begins as a straightforward burglary into a tense and unsettling expedition. The developer openly presents the project as an experimental experience with a blend of horror, mystery, and dark humor instead of promising relentless scares, making it clear that atmosphere is the true focus. The game's strongest quality lies in its environmental storytelling and immersive presentation. Players travel through gloomy forests before descending into the forgotten tomb, with every location designed to create uncertainty through dim lighting, detailed environments, and carefully crafted sound design. Rather than overwhelming players with constant jump scares, Mara builds tension through silence, exploration, and the feeling that something unknown may be waiting around every corner. The use of surround sound enhances the sense of isolation, while the realistic visual presentation helps transform relatively compact environments into places that feel far larger and more intimidating than they actually are. Even though the adventure is brief, the pacing rarely feels rushed because each area encourages careful observation instead of mindless progression. Exploration forms the backbone of the gameplay. Searching for ancient valuables is more than simply collecting objects, as players must investigate hidden corners, examine clues, and navigate the dangerous environment while staying alert. A unique gameplay mechanic called the "Thief's Instinct" serves as the protagonist's signature ability, highlighting important objects and tracks that may otherwise be overlooked. This mechanic successfully reinforces the protagonist's identity as an experienced thief while preventing exploration from becoming frustrating. Instead of relying on excessive hand-holding, the ability simply guides players toward meaningful discoveries, maintaining a satisfying balance between player agency and accessibility. Although marketed as psychological horror, Mara leans much more heavily into suspense and mystery than outright terror. Players expecting endless monsters, elaborate combat systems, or frequent scripted scares may find the experience surprisingly restrained. Instead, the game focuses on maintaining an eerie atmosphere throughout the adventure, allowing curiosity and uncertainty to replace conventional horror tropes. This design philosophy works well for players who appreciate slower horror experiences that emphasize mood over shock value. Moments of subtle humor occasionally interrupt the tension, giving the adventure a distinctive personality that prevents it from becoming relentlessly bleak while still preserving the mysterious tone. From a technical standpoint, the game delivers an attractive visual presentation considering its independent scope. Environmental textures, lighting, and environmental effects contribute significantly to immersion, while the soundscape consistently reinforces the unsettling mood. The controls remain straightforward, allowing players to focus on exploration without unnecessary mechanical complexity. Since the experience lasts less than an hour, the game avoids overstaying its welcome, although some players may wish there were additional puzzles, optional secrets, or branching outcomes to encourage replayability. The concise runtime makes Mara feel almost like an interactive horror short film, delivering a complete narrative without unnecessary padding. The narrative itself remains intentionally simple, centering on greed, curiosity, and the unknown dangers hidden beneath forgotten ruins. Rather than presenting an elaborate plot filled with exposition, the story unfolds naturally through exploration and environmental details, encouraging players to interpret events for themselves. This minimalist storytelling complements the game's experimental nature and allows the atmosphere to remain the primary attraction. The developer's transparency about the project being an experiment also sets appropriate expectations, helping players appreciate the experience for what it intends to be instead of expecting a full-scale horror epic. One noteworthy detail is the disclosed use of AI-generated sound effects for some audio elements. While this may generate discussion among players regarding creative tools, the implementation does not overshadow the overall presentation, as the game's audio design remains effective in supporting immersion and suspense. Overall, Mara succeeds as a short atmospheric horror experience that understands its own limitations and builds its identity around focused exploration, environmental immersion, and psychological tension rather than lengthy gameplay or excessive scares. Its engaging premise, effective use of sound, attractive environments, and unique Thief's Instinct mechanic combine to create an entertaining adventure that horror fans can complete in a single sitting. Those seeking a lengthy campaign or action-heavy gameplay may find it too brief, but players who enjoy slow-burning suspense, mysterious locations, and compact narrative experiences will likely appreciate what Nick Abrams has created.
Game has a bug where the lock pick animation does not appear thus rendering the game totally unplayable (you can’t progress without opening the case with the lock picks as you need the item ti stop the gas leak). Other than that, some text was illegible. The atmosphere for the time I managed to play was good but not scary. Thief skill does not actually help much.
ไม่เลวแต่ไม่น่ากลัว! สำหรับราคาดังกล่าวก็ยิ่งดี!
Honestly, this game surprised me it's genuinely good and pretty funny in parts! This is coming from someone who saw the 'Mixed' reviews on Steam. The playthrough took me about an hour. I watched someone else play it, and they blitzed through it in like 30-40 minutes. But you know what? The dev is totally upfront about it being short it's right there in the description. Gotta respect that honesty! I also really dug the voice acting, even if I needed subtitles to understand what was going on, haha. For such a tiny price tag, I'd definitely recommend grabbing it. Solid 7 out of 10 from me. In fact, I liked it so much I already picked up another game by the same developer
