About

Malón is an indie tower defense game with a top-down view that combines elements of strategy and skill: victory depends as much on your strategic insight as on your dexterity in controlling your character.
In Malón, you’ll manage a frontier army outpost, taking on the responsibility of defending it at all costs. To succeed, you’ll need to grow your economy, expand your base, and train soldiers to fight by your side in defense of the flag.

Day and Night Cycles:
During the day — when strategy takes center stage — you’ll have to think carefully about how to invest your coins, because once night falls, there’s no turning back.
During the dark hours, you'll have to fight with whatever you've got. The worse your decisions were during the day, the more you’ll need to make up for them with your skill at night.

Upgrade Units and Structures:
Expanding the fort with new structures and units isn’t enough, you’ll also have to upgrade them before it’s too late.

Give your gauchos boleadoras, replace your soldiers’ old muskets with breech-loading rifles, load your cannons with grapeshot… These are just some of the things awaiting you in Malón.

Malon's Campaign:

Each of these has its own characteristics that make it unique. Discover what lies hidden in Pampa, Patagonia, and Andes to earn three stars on every level!

Endless Survival Mode:

Compare your skills with other players! Survival mode features a global ranking, where you’ll be able to fight for a spot in the top 10 players who have managed to withstand the most nights with their fort.
A Good Proof of Concept
(1.0) (Okay, I'm breaking my little review formula for Malón. It's a $5 game at time of writing, so I don't want this to come across as overly critical. I have lots of critiques but ultimately give the game a thumbs up.) This is a frontier-themed outpost builder. I don't think tower defense is strictly the best definition for it, as you're building an entire outpost. You can purchase melee firefighters and set up a guard tower for nightfall. Economy gameplay is pretty basic. Once you've played a few levels, though, you pretty much see all the game seems to be able to offer.
Pros
-Theming The frontier theming is stuck to throughout all the menus and upgrade options. It's a theme I don't think I've really seen for TD, so this was intriguing. I appreciated the detail of the soldier in the guard tower muzzle-loading his rifle. I think that speaks well to the developers' attention to the setting. The Western/frontier setting is one that is prime for a tower defense/wave defense game, I believe, and Lara the Pitbull has done well to capitalize on that. -Some Forgiving Consequences Pretty much every night, I got beat to a near pulp and lost my walls and guard tower. Luckily, you heal and rebuild for free so it gives you a chance to refine your tactics and figure out exactly how to juke the enemy wave. Not everything is completely lost each night.
Cons
-Repetitive Gameplay I got through seven waves and bought each first level building, before realizing this was pretty much all that was going to be in it. The enemies always attack from the same direction, and I only saw one different enemy type. The way to counter both types was the same, dodge behind them as they just destroy your outpost, and attack. -Bland Player Choice Your character will automatically shoot his six shooter at the closest enemy, and then has an undisclosed reload time. Beside that, the only other combat ability he has is a melee attack with a long cool down. Now, the melee is an AoE attack and lets you hurt multiple enemies. But, you're pretty much just standing there otherwise, watching all the other units fight, with no way to otherwise affect the battle, and each night the enemy usually destroy multiple structures. Speaking of structures, they're plug-and-play. You don't get to choose where to place guard towers or set walls. You go to predefined locations, slot in some coins, and watch them build into whatever it is. You can place your hired mercenaries around where you want, but they'll wander and won't go outside the walls, so not a lot of choice there. -Slow Economy You permanently lose your cows (economy producers) when they get attacked, and given the before mentioned combat, it gets pretty frustrating to watch at least a few of them fall while your cooldowns are cycling before you can take out all the attackers aggroing the cows. The money earned otherwise was pretty much a drip feed and just didn't do enough to make each round feel like meaningful progress.
All in all, Malón is a cool concept that needs enhancing. I would go into this with that in mind. Gamers should pick this up primarily to support the devs and provide feedback, not expecting to get an intense TD experience with thematic elements. I think we will see good things from Lara the Pitbull in the future.
Honestly, it's a game that shows promise; if they didn't tell you that, I'd think it was an indie game from Europe. The game needs realistic ambient music, or better yet, the flora and fauna... well, we're in the humid pampas and there's nothing there... an environmental system like rain, or travelers we have to protect... the aiming and combat could be improved. I feel like earning money gets repetitive, and the indigenous people always live in very close groups; they should spread them out a bit. Anyway, the game is worth it!
