This is a gem. Edit: The 1.0 release was kind of a joke though. All the features that the game previously told you were not implemented are still not implemented (guild quests, crafting). I don't care about a new graphics shader. At this point I suppose the expansion, which was originally announced for 2012, will literally just feature 1-2 new enemy types and new markov chain quests, if it ever releases.
I'd call this game a gem in need of cutting. It's got a lot to offer and a rarely done style of gameplay, but in it's current state is incredibly rough around the edges, sides, pretty much all over, but it'll give you quite a lot of enjoyment if you don't mind the general wonkiness it has, and given plenty of polish could be something absolutely wonderful. If you can get past the graphics and clunkiness it's a good game and in some part the clunk is part of the charm!
Only purchase if you like M&M like RPG
The game is good? No, but there are few first person RPG's. This is why i recommend for M&M fans. First of all, the loadings takes a ethernity. Second, the character stats are very ambiguous. Thrid. The insta kill traps + ethernal loadings turns some quests very annoying. Mainly if you have to clear a dungeon and there are few enemies left in dungeon. All dungeons fells like the same in terms of design, but there are few first person RPG's. This is why i recommend the game. M&M X Legacy still worst,
I am really getting into Malevolence. Now that I have put a significant amount of time into the game and overcome the initial learning curve so to speak, let me tell you why I am enjoying this game so much, and why I see myself playing this game for many many more hours. I am playing permadeath, I have had enough characters die, to know that to get one up to a high level requires a careful play style, and significant planning. I have gotten to the stage where I am now getting significant treasure hauls from my dungeon delves, and can start focusing on purchases other than healing potions (which I have required in bulk to survive). I am currently collecting the spell gems now, and having lots of fun crafting my own enchantments on my equipment, and crafting spells to get me out of trouble. The dungeon delves all get to be very same same as the game progresses, (they are all computer generated after all) but I enjoy the challenge of the monster difficulty getting progressively harder as you level up yourself, and enjoy the randomness associated with the boss monsters attack which adds an element of additional risk to the boss monster when you finally get to him. Also I love the fact that the world is infinite but each player gets their own instance of the same world, and the fact that you can claim a location as being the first person to visit it if no one else in the real world has found it yet. Once I have amassed a bit more cash, I am going to go in an in-game journey to try and find gameworld (1,1) (you start in gameworld (500,600) each gamework I would estimate would take hours to cross from one end to another) - I have a feeling I could get there eventually with enough investments in Griffin flight along the way. This game really appeals to me - I love challenging old school type games, the turn based aspect of the game is great, and the allure of endless loot and unlimited level up potential has me wondering how high I can push myself before I throw in the towel.
Learning Malevolence: Step 1: Make Character Step 2: Enter First Dungeon Step 3: Immediately fall in to a pit fall trap 10/10 :D Love this!
One of my favorite dungeon crawlers. The world is immense, Permadeath, amazing amounts of loot, and a suprising degree of dificulty. Meaning sometimes you never go into a dungeon unprepared. The early game can be very difficult. Some people might get bored quickly with the lack of monster variation but with the recent magic update monsters can have as many varied spells as the player sometimes which makes up for that. If you are into dungeon crawlers, rougelikes with massive amounts of loot this is a game for you.
wholeheartedly reccommend this absolutely fabulous
Maybe the Idea of the game is excellent , like MM8 BUT -loading world blocks every 20 seconds -empty fields , walk,walk,walk...nothing here, nothing there -graphics in 2022 should be a litthe better than amiga textures -required optimisation , HD patch , 1 building slows down whole world -price is a way to high for this product
Great old school open world rpg. Reminds me of daggerfall. If this is your thing, get this!!
I believe this game is going to be either a hit or a miss depending on what the gamer prefers. The game is very difficult but it is not fast-paced. In fact, the entire game requires some strategic thinking and a little bit of luck. First, regarding the genre of the game, it is a blobber. Specifically, it is a blobber where you are alone and there's no party turn-based battle system like Etrian Odyssey. Instead, the battle system is turn based on the square movement grid. You move around, you bump into monsters, and you hit them and they hit you back. Each square you move consists of a turn. Even more, the entire game is almost completely randomly generated except for maybe the starting area. For the programming expert, the random generation is basically a "seeded" random generator. That is how the world is persistent. So is the game decent? It really depends on your taste. If you like blobber games where you delve into dungeons, look for loot while avoiding and disarming traps, fight monsters turn-based and have to think a little and ration your potion supplies, and want an infinite gameplay version of that, this game is for you. The amount of dungeons and places to clear is simply huge and all of your level ups will feel like you have achieved them. The downside, however, is that once you understand this game and know what to do, the game can sometimes be a bit monotonous. The game suffers from a lack of monster variety, and the randomly generated quests needs more variety as well. The game is not vast and filled with different mechanics and build abilities like some rogue-like games such as Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. However, I believe it does a good job in creating the first "infinite" blobber and I can see huge potential for this game. For me, I personally enjoy this game and I would rate it an 7/10. Your experiences will differ from mine depending on what you like. However, I find it astounding that this game is developed really by 1 person and that there is still an upcoming expansion for it. I hope the expansion can really make the game much better and add in the necessary content to make the game more interesting.
