I like this game but it is not for everyone. This is a throwback game to the days of yesteryear. However there are things that are deeper here and things that are more shallow. The deepness lies in the vastness of the world. There are literally thousands of dungeons in this world. The shallowness is the lack of creature variety and no actual RPG interaction. But this is More in line with games like Eye of the Beholder, Legends of Grimrock, Fall of the Dungeon Gaurdians and the always ephereal grimoire. The difference is it is free roam. Now that can be a good or a bad thing. Free Roam is great but you might wonder into a tomb where you are seriuosly out matched. You play as a single character, which I usually don't like in an RPG, (combat rpg or real rpg) and take various quest to gain prestige, power, and ability to purchase greater goodies. The quest are shallow, really just go find this dungeon, which is not easy in this vast world, kill certain amount of x creatures or the big bad boss. Not anything that hasn't been done a zillion times. But it is done differently than the games of old. Of course you still attack monsters wth a few different attacks, weapons, or skills but the magic system is based on Gems. Power gems have different levels and different colored gems are for different spells....fire, frost, healing, slowing...you know the deal. You also have three Gems on your HUD. Now these are warning gems and have nothing to do with the spells. One gem lights up when monsters are near, simulating what would be sound and smell, the other lights up because of your dungeon intuition, a trap...booo! I need to mention now there are ways to check for traps, and you better do it cause these aint the prick your finger kinda traps. These traps were meant to kill aspiring heroes....... The third red gem lights up for secret doors in walls So some specifics.... Visuals...uhmm..no, not its strong point sound and music....decent no better. edited..it has grown on me greatly I rally like the music and sounds automapping in dungeons...yes praise be...you need it secrets areas...check vastness...uncomprehendable really the biggest I haveever seen in any game.. gameplay...repetitive but fun, or frustrating depending on how your adventure is going. Oh, you know how in some games you can run back to the entrance and escape disaster? This may or may not work here as monsters will follow you outside. And I already said it was a blobber so one increment at a time movements. There are obstacles out side and the creatures very often cut you off ruining your day. If you get caught outside at night its probably game over..night time creatures are VERY strong. Lots of treasure and stuff? (edited). the magic enchantment system adds a lot to it I forgot to mention this is more a 3-d rogue like. Its designed to be tough. Now I know none of these description are particularly wowing so you may ask why I recommend this game? Its one of those games you play to give your mind a break. Couple hours here. Couple hours there. In small chunks it will hold your interest. (Edited) I easily lose 12 hours now that I know how to play... Now I wont call it relaxing completely because there are plenty of "Oh Crap!" moments you experience. Who might like this game? Old school rpg'ers. Casual adventurers, gamers that love step rpg's. Who will not like this game? Console converts, graphics junkies and people who hate to have their avatars die. You will die my friends...oh but how you will die. Oh one last thing. This game has been in development for a LONG time. Not 23 years Grimoire long but still a long time. The dev is always updating. Cheers. 9/15/19 A LOT has been added. MAGIC!!! And it is done differently than any other game I have ever seen. You get spell disk that hold different size crystals. You combine the crystals to CREATE your own spells. there are plenty of effects. AND the spells are often placed as enchantments on all your gear. In fact All your gear will became magically enchanted in really a short time. The ENCHANTED WEAPONS and ARMOR is the determining factor in this game. You gotta be careful though. Many pieces of gear have multiple enchantments and some can harm you. For example you may find an awesome sword that does 31-42 damage burns enemies and poisons them at the same time, but it may have a negative effect like teleport self, which perhaps being useful for escape at times, can often lead to you teleporting into a worse situation. There are almost no bugs.. I haven't had a game bug in years..not one. In Summary this game is fantastic!! with only one hitch.. the outdoor graphics. If you like-rouge-likes, I HIGHLY recommend this 1ST PERSON game. Edit 2/19/20: My character is now level 29. I know exactly how to play this game and what things do. Almost 200 hours and I have barely scratched the games content. If you are a player that is in for the long haul, just get it, stick with it, (it can be frustrating while you're learning) and enjoy. Nothing but praises for this old school game.

A sloppy unplayable mess for the moment. Spend your money elsewhere.
It's great to see an old-school RPG that is actually "old-school" and not "retro". The feeling, atmosphere and layout feel like a trip back to the RPGs of old without the hassling UI or unintentional confusion that comes with playing my old favourites in a modern setting. The fact that the entire game is procedurally generated is just icing on the cake! The game just seems so expansive with this procedural system and the developer is bringing more and more to the table with each update. Definitely a must have for the explorer type players and a pleasant nightmare for completionists.
If you love the classic dungeon crawlers (which I do) then you'll love this. If you love rogue-like game that are very hard (which I do) then you'll most likely love this game. This game is a blast - it is vast (infinite in fact) and very hard. Alex, the developer has been working on improving it for a couple years and it is always a treat when he releases a new version. For him, this is a labor of love and you can tell it in the quality of the game. He is also one of the friendliest and most awesome developers for any game I've seen (which reminds me, I need to get active on the forums again.) I owned this game before it was put on steam and I put quite a bit of hours into it then. Unfortunately, I have been tied up with work and some side projects and consequently I haven't spent much time playing games. However, this is one of my all time favorite games. I am looking forward to going back to it and will be playing it off and on for the rest of my life. It is that cool.
Wow. After all the years it´s finally released ! Grid based game, turn based fights. Really 90´s graphics and an old school RPG. Created with much heart blood and is having a good soul of a game. It´s not a so called retro game, or old-school-like, it IS retro (in all the good way it can be). The dungeons are giving me the "good old times" feeling. I like the sounds and the music. It´s really hard at the beginning. Never surrender. Never give up. But always remember: try to sleep to fill up your life energy, using "P" key ! But sleep can be interrupted by enemies. A chance to find some more loot. I will update my review after some more hours. And, again, sorry for not best english writings ;)
Take one part Might and Magic. Add in some gfx flair. Multiply it by a million for how big the world is. Then convert to pints of blood, sweat, and tears, cause the only being that has shed more of that than this dev has poured into this game...... is you when you walk over that first spike trap! Controls are standard fare, done well. And the new magic system is eagerly awaited. Can't wait for the polish run! 2,000,000 Pints/Spike Trap. SEVERELY recommended!
A game you can play forever. I got lost in its soundtrack and ambient environment. I have lost hours just adventuring in game, it's almost hypnotic. I die all the time, and just keep coming back for more.
I have died so many times to pit traps. I have waited so long for the magic update. This game is just a lot of fun to play. The update was worth the wait, and this game shines with it in place. There isn't much more to say here. Yes, others have claimed the game is unfair as an early access game. B.S. Play it and have fun. September 20th update: Hotfixes have already started fixing the long awaited magic update, and the developer has made it his mission to start fixing and tweaking what he has released. Great game if you're into procedural generation and its madness and roguelike difficulties. Thumbs up. April 23, 2017 update: Developer cares for his community, and cares this game runs correctly. The newest enchantment update is phenomenal and opens up gameplay possibilities. It's nearing 1.0 final release. If you really think you're not part of a community with the game, you're just not trying to get involved. The opportunity is there over at the official Malevolence forums. A gem of a game. If you're looking at reviews thinking: nah. You're losing out and will pay more money when 1.0 goes live. April 8, 2019: VERSION 1: All I can say is: excitement. The game really is a fun time. Now to wait for the expansion. Congratulations Alex. Big thumbs up.
You have got to be kidding. This is a very bad game. I wouldn't even play this if it were free. The "walking" controls are ridiculous. One click on left or right turns you 90 degrees. Don't bother with this one.
