Just a glance at the store page for Make a Killing will let you know exactly what type of game it is; there's nothing more, and nothing less to it than that. It's, of course, one of those "run through the woods and collect things while avoiding a deadly bad guy" Slenderman-esque clones; although done in a black and white style that's bathed in film grain. It's also a game that is actively being worked on by the developer, which is normally a good thing. However, in this scenario, Dystopia Interactive is pumping out content for something that nobody wants to play, while not taking into consideration that they are making a fundamental mistake by creating a game for themselves and not their audience. To describe a little bit more of what's happening in the gameplay, you run around a forest while wielding a shotgun with limited ammo. You start with six rounds, but you can increase the starting capacity by picking up gold and spending it on ammo in the main menu. Rounds can also be found on victim bodies around the game. The goal is to activate all of the pillars on the map, by finding dismembered limbs and putting them on the pillars, all the while avoiding floating screeching entities called Votaries. These Votaries will give away your location if you get too close, and an immortal man named Ira may or may not come running up to slaughter you. In the end, it doesn't matter if a Votaries screams or not, Ira will find you at some point, which you have to shoot him to make him go away. Once you activate all the pillars, you can kill Ira. Herein lies the problem; Ira is silent. You can hear him scrape his blades together, but that sound occurs even when he is nowhere to be seen. He'll just suddenly appear somewhere close to you, run up and stab you to death. Even with a 7.1 surround sound headset on, I could not hear this NPC running up behind me. It's irritating, it's frustrating, and it completely kills any urge to continue even attempting to progress, since once you're dead all of your progress is lost. You have to memorize where these limbs are, which is next to impossible, and hope that Ira doesn't appear right beside you and maim you before you can finish. This won't happen, since his appearance is triggered by a few factors; one of them being the activation of a pillar. Just to make sure it wasn't me being completely out of touch with this style of game, I took to YouTube to see what other people had to say. Sure enough, every video and every comment I saw had something to say to the effect of "I don't understand this game" and "It's too difficult". Flat out, Make a Killing is not fun. No one out there is praising this title, nor are they trying to finish it to even get to the new content that is being released because it is not something that anyone wants to spend time slogging through. The developer has driven up the difficulty to compensate for the lack of actual gameplay, otherwise it could be finished in 30-60 minutes, tops. It is my understanding that upon initial release there were procedurally generated maps, a feature that has since been removed to make the game easier. Dystopia Interactive... what are you doing? Why are you making content for a game with no playerbase? Why are you not, instead, dedicating your time to making this a game that someone would actually want to play? Fix the difficulty. Make it so that pillar progress saves. Give Ira some footsteps, at the very least. Instead of doing any of this, you are now working on a third chapter, when no one gives a care enough to even get to the second chapter. Is this game for you, or for us? I would also beware the other reviews as they seem suspicious. Nothing but brief, positive ratings from accounts with very few games, and very few reviews. Once you understand what you have to do, this game is actually pretty fun and challenging.
Tense atmosphere and beautiful graphics. A very simple gameplay with easy to understand mechanics and yet so deep and scary. Very good ambience sound and the vutures scream is just terrifying. Amazing experience for something so short. The status of itens picked, gold collected and enemies killed makes you push even harder to play over and over again to get all achievements and no matter how many times I got killed by that knife guy, I always got a jumpscare when he suddenly apears. 10/10 would definitely die again!
I must say this game plays perfect. Very smooth and an intresting graphical choice. Everything is nicely done. HOWEVER : The game wants you to die over and over, and there almost no story... How do you die? Well there is this unkillable freak that will keep chasing you out of nowhere and end your game. For me that's a game breaker, because the gunplay feels solid and they could have made a nice story-driven game out of this. Now it's just rinse and repeat. Some people might like this kind of gameplay, well I'm not really a fan. So not recommended, maybe on a sale if you like these kind of games.
This game is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid. The game basically drops you off with ZERO knowledge or information. I am all about games being difficult if the rules are established and clear. This game fails to do that. It even fails at providing basic instructions to succeed. Along with that, with little to NO info, the game's "rules" constantly change. It is basically randomized. To be honest, it is a Slenderman clone if that is your thing, just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ buy Slenderman. Not this POS. I will say, that the tone was pretty interesting. Very spooky even, but that is immediately ruined because most of your time is spent on trying to understand what the ♥♥♥♥ you're supposed to be doing in this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. Side side note: 1 ammo = 50 gold?
so, after nearly 2 years from when i got the game, ive finally beaten it, and now i can leave a proper review to it. editors note: it came out a litle bit too big. its like a guide/review at this point. another note [m] is for small/dumb spoilers and [M] is for important spoilers so, the most important part, THE GAME ITSELF. in the first part of the game, it seems to be only a shooter. Some may even call it a "slenderman knock-off", think its a "run around the dark forest searching for something, while running from a scary man" kinda game, but its way different. although at first it may seem to be like it, later on it becomes way scarier. the game shifts from scaring you with "the scary man" [m]
the scary man is called ira
to making you anxious by its atmosphere. the tight corridors, the creepy caves, all accompanied by a well-made soundtrack, all made to make you afraid to even make a step. you feel as if youre petrified, but you know, that you have to move, thats the only thing you have left. but heres where the worst flaw of the game surfaces, which is that after a death, you respawn at the beginning of the part. this is most noticeable in the first part, where after youve beaten the first one [m]
which have only <8% of players have one :(
youre shaking, and seeing the note saying [M]
its not over yet, im still here
only makes it worse. and when you die, you... just respawn at the beginning of the part. this really ruins the immersion. yet i myself cant come up with a better solution, so we'll have to live with that :/ another flaw with the game, is that its short. which is unerstanable for an indie game, but still is kinda sad. Now comes the GAMEPLAY! honestly, besides part 1 and 2, there is not really a lot of things to say about the gameplay, an to be honest it says enough about the gameplay in the later parts, so well focus on the first two. in the first part your main goal is to find 4 altars with limbs on them and sacrifice them, [M]
after which Ira becomes mortal and charges at you and when you kill him
the door will open, which leads you to the second part. the first part begins with us being dropped out in the middle of forest with a sign in front of us. showing 4 points on the map, which we have to come to. (this thing wasnt in the beta too. thanks for the sign a lot, Dev) while roaming around the forest youll notice a couple of things. some structures and some black creatures [m]
called voltaires
. there are 3 types of structures. the first one are small box-sized slab, with some black matter above it, that lights up, when you approach it. those are beacons of sorts. because the map isnt randomly generated anymore (once again, thanks, Dev) they are really useful to navigate. the second type is four pillars standing round 2 meters from each other in a square shape. in between those pillars youll find a body bag with "free or kill" written on it. if you decide to "free" it, by interacting with it, itll fall down, and youll be able to get 2 ammo from it. however, you can actually shoot it down, after which itll fall down and set on fire. the thing is youll be able get a random amount of ammo, from 0 to 4 i think. and ammo here are sparse, so be careful when you take this risk, because it might now pay off. an the third type is a bunch of pillars standing together very close. in the center youll find a slab with gold on it (around 6). and the gold is really useful, since you can spend 50 gold in the "status" menu to get a +1 to starting ammo. it might not seem like a lot, but itll be very helpfull later on. the Voltaires' spawn is set in some places, but mostly they spawn randomly. they spawn near the altars with the limbs. when you go near them, they will scream, which makes Ira more aggresive. you can shoot Voltaires, so that they dont scream, but i didnt really find it that usefull. the second part is way different than the first part. in this one you dont run around the forest, but instead you [M]
enter the shaft system, with its tight corridors, dark lightning, and sharp corners, with all kinds of horrors lurking around those corners
the last point is THE SOUNDS this game cant boast with a large variety of music, or, any music at all to be fair. as far as i remember it has only ambience and sounds, but holy hell do they do a good job. sounds always make 50% of the game, in any game, and they made this game great. besides ambience which makes you anxious at all times there are a lot of sounds to identify every single thing there is. from Ira getting getting agresive, to being close to a voltaire. the sounds telegraph everything. an the greatest thing about the sounds in this game, is that the sounds arent cluttered. the sound isnt messy. you always listen to the audio, identify the threat, and pinpoint where it comes from. That makes using audio not only necessary to beat the game, but also makes you makes you constantly anxious and scared, which is absolutely awesome. My rating: 8/10 awesome game, short and sweet.
Initial impressions: great atmosphere, the sounds, music and graphics are fantastic for this style of game. The art is solid, kind of takes a bit to figure out what to do. Only have played a few times, very tense and foreboding. I will have to give it some more time, to see if I can figure out more and progress. Not a typical shooter, makes you think to progress. Once I get more game time, I will amend my review. Overall a hidden gem for the right kind of player looking for this type game style.
