MAFIA: Family’s Secret is a small-scale crime game that wears its indie identity proudly, delivering a focused blend of top-down action and noir-inspired storytelling. Developed and published by Tails Games, the game sets its sights firmly on atmosphere rather than spectacle, placing players in the role of a member of the Guidice mafia family during the 1950s. Instead of attempting to rival large-budget crime epics, it opts for a more intimate approach, framing its narrative around family loyalty, buried truths, and the consequences of life in the underworld. From the outset, it makes clear that this is a story-driven experience filtered through retro sensibilities, combining classic crime fiction themes with arcade-style gameplay. The narrative backbone revolves around uncovering long-hidden secrets within the Guidice family, and the game leans heavily on noir tropes to sell that mystery. Dialogue scenes and story interludes are used to flesh out characters and motivations, giving context to the violence that follows. While the writing can occasionally feel rough around the edges, the intent is clear: this is a tale about power, betrayal, and the fragile bonds that hold a criminal family together. The period setting helps reinforce that tone, even if it’s more suggested through dialogue and mood than through lavish environmental detail. The result is a story that may not always be subtle or perfectly paced, but one that provides a strong thematic anchor for the action. Gameplay is built around fast, unforgiving top-down shooting. Missions drop you into compact maps filled with hostile gang members and law enforcement, demanding quick reflexes and careful positioning. Combat has an almost arcade-like immediacy, where mistakes are punished swiftly and success comes from learning enemy patterns and mastering movement. There’s a rhythm to the encounters that recalls classic twin-stick shooters, emphasizing awareness and precision over raw firepower. With more than thirty missions to work through, the game maintains a steady cadence, gradually escalating difficulty and layering new challenges without dramatically altering the core mechanics. Visually, MAFIA: Family’s Secret embraces a stylized look rather than realism. Environments are clean and readable, prioritizing clarity during combat, while character designs and color choices help differentiate enemies at a glance. This approach works well with the top-down perspective, ensuring that action remains legible even when firefights become chaotic. The presentation may be simple, but it’s cohesive, and it supports the gameplay rather than distracting from it. Paired with moody music and sound effects, the overall aesthetic does a respectable job of evoking a pulpy crime-drama atmosphere. Where the game occasionally stumbles is in polish and balance. Certain mechanics can feel a bit rigid, and some players may notice rough edges in controls or settings that don’t behave as intuitively as expected. The transition between story segments and action can also feel abrupt, sometimes interrupting narrative flow. These issues don’t completely derail the experience, but they do remind you that this is a modest indie project rather than a fully refined blockbuster. For players who value smooth presentation above all else, these imperfections may stand out more than intended. Taken as a whole, MAFIA: Family’s Secret is a compact but earnest crime game that succeeds through focus rather than scale. It offers a solid run of challenging top-down combat, wrapped in a noir-flavored story that adds weight to each mission. While it doesn’t reinvent the genre or deliver flawless execution, it provides a distinctive experience for fans of retro shooters and crime dramas alike. For those willing to accept some rough edges in exchange for atmosphere, challenge, and a clear creative vision, it stands as a worthwhile and memorable indie entry in the crime-action space. the game is perfect for those who have free time, with this game the time will fly by!
The Godfather is resting, in a lot of action and meat!)
Beautiful dynamic top-down shooter with good graphics and awesome soundtrack :)
Mafia stories with Hotline Miami-style shootouts.
And a wonderful game it is too, if you've got the balls for it.
Today, fewer games come out in a similar setting with a top view, which is very upsetting. The game is pretty good, you can immediately see the developers prepared for the release. A good product.
a fun game, my friend and I bought it as soon as it came out, I liked it
