Lord Goblin, developed by BBBen and his Big Brass Band and published by TinyHat Studios, is a narrative-focused hybrid that mixes light management mechanics with a branching, choice-driven structure set in a dark fantasy world. Rather than positioning itself as a deep strategy or simulation game, it leans heavily into storytelling, using its systems primarily as a way to frame decisions and consequences. The result is an experience that feels closer to an interactive narrative with resource elements than a traditional management title. The premise centers on an unlikely rise to power. You begin as an unremarkable goblin whose circumstances change dramatically after a magical incident, placing you in a leadership role within a chaotic and often unpredictable society. This setup gives the game a foundation for both progression and storytelling, as you navigate responsibilities, manage limited resources, and deal with the personalities around you. While the world itself is not extensively developed, it provides enough context to support the game’s events and character interactions. Gameplay is structured around a combination of decision-making and basic management tasks. Players are asked to allocate resources, make choices that affect relationships, and determine how certain situations unfold. These systems are intentionally simple, ensuring that the focus remains on the narrative rather than complex mechanics. While this makes the game accessible, it also means that strategic depth is limited. Most decisions are less about optimizing systems and more about exploring different narrative outcomes. The branching structure is one of the game’s most prominent features. Choices made throughout the experience can lead to different events, character interactions, and endings, encouraging multiple playthroughs to see how various paths unfold. This gives the game a sense of replayability, as players can experiment with different approaches and observe how the story changes. However, the extent of these variations can be inconsistent, with some paths offering more meaningful differences than others. Visually, the game adopts an anime-inspired style that aligns with its genre and tone. Character artwork is expressive and serves as the primary vehicle for conveying emotion and personality. Environments are more static and function mainly as backdrops for dialogue and events, reinforcing the game’s narrative focus. The overall presentation is cohesive, though it remains relatively simple in terms of technical execution. Thematically, Lord Goblin commits strongly to its tone and subject matter, integrating its themes directly into both narrative and gameplay. This gives the game a clear identity, but it also narrows its appeal. It is designed with a specific audience in mind, and players outside that target group may find it difficult to engage with its content, regardless of its structure or mechanics. Pacing can vary throughout the experience. Some segments move quickly, introducing new scenarios and choices, while others linger on similar interactions, which can lead to repetition. The lack of evolving gameplay systems contributes to this, as the core loop remains largely unchanged from beginning to end. While the narrative branches provide some variation, the underlying mechanics do not significantly expand. Despite these limitations, Lord Goblin succeeds in delivering a focused and cohesive experience. It understands its strengths and builds around them, offering a choice-driven narrative that rewards experimentation and exploration. While it may not offer the depth or variety of more complex simulation games, it provides a clear and structured experience that aligns with its design goals. In the end, Lord Goblin stands as a specialized title that prioritizes narrative agency over mechanical complexity. It offers a replayable, decision-driven experience that will appeal to players interested in its particular blend of storytelling and light management. While its scope is limited and its systems are simple, it remains engaging within its niche. Rating: 7/10
Pretty good VN with light management aspects. The art and voice acting make for some good H-scenes and I actually enjoy reading the non-spicy bits. My only concern is that it's Early Access and the pace of development.
GAAWWBLIN. For real, though, you play as a Goblin who gets put in control of the local land and you have to develop it with the assistance of four lovely ladies. The management is a bit of grind, but once you get the ball rolling it's smooth sailing (at least from my experience). The art style is what stands out the most, was a bit hesitant about but really grew on me. It blends well with the animated scenes, which are quite enticing to watch. I look forward in seeing the relationships between the main characters, only gone through the Az'ea path so far which turned out more wholesome (and sexy) than expected. Not sure if there are endings in this game or if they'll be added in the final product, but I hope marriage and pregnancy will be included. Only gripe right now is the lack of voice lines in parts that could have used them. Other than that, I enjoyed this game and look forward to more updates from the developers.
