Without any introduction or backstory, you begin inside a house controlling a slime. There’s only one way to go, so you head outside and figure out what you’re supposed to do. One of the first things you’ll notice is how strange the control scheme feels. By default, you have to use both the keyboard and mouse buttons, which is awkward because the game only needs six inputs. Four are for movement, while the other two activate your special power. Even though the game appears to have no gamepad support, you can actually bind controls by pressing gamepad buttons, and they will register. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help much because the control settings are broken. The bindings are mixed up, so if you try to change the down button, the game registers the jump button instead. To make things worse, the jump button can’t be rebound at all. Whether you like it or not, you’re stuck playing with a keyboard. Your goal is to find numbered scrolls by solving platforming challenges. The world is open, allowing you to travel freely between different areas. Some sections focus on traditional platforming, asking you to jump over spikes and pits or across disappearing blocks. Thankfully, these challenges are fair because the blocks stay solid as long as you’re standing on them. The more interesting mechanic revolves around a magical crown. It lets you jump higher and move through water. Without it, the current pushes you downward and prevents you from jumping. Its main purpose, however, is teleportation. You can place the crown on the ground, usually on a pressure switch, walk through the newly opened door, and then recall the crown back to you. You can also swap places with the crown. Both abilities work across multiple screens, which opens up some clever puzzle possibilities. You can leave the crown in one area and recall it from another. If you place the crown and then die, you respawn next to it. If you die while wearing it, however, you respawn at the nearest checkpoint, represented by small flags scattered throughout each area. One mechanic I genuinely enjoyed is how certain objects change the crown’s abilities. Flowers growing from the ground transform the crown into a floating platform, letting you reach higher ledges or safely cross spikes. As soon as you recall the crown, it returns to its normal form. The part I enjoyed much less is how little guidance the game provides. There’s no map and almost no explanation of how anything works. The only hints are numbers and arrows pointing toward the next scroll. That quickly becomes frustrating because you can get stuck very early until you accidentally discover that placing the crown on top of a candle lights it, and swapping places with the crown next to a pulsating orb removes it. Unfortunately, the orb reappears after only a few seconds. Many puzzles require completing several steps in the correct order, and making a single mistake forces you to restart the entire sequence. That often means repeating several minutes of climbing and platforming. It’s also surprisingly easy to fail because important puzzle elements, such as candles and orbs, can be spread across multiple screens. Even worse, if you accidentally press the recall button instead of swapping places with the crown, all your progress is instantly erased, leaving you to do the whole sequence again.
