This one really has one trying out different paths and choices. The stats are often not enough to get all things done one way or another, and it becomes clear that a specialization in one or two fields is the way to go. It is not easy pleasing everyone and one is bound to annoy one or two factions. I had fun trolling Alex his whole life, and the purists were easy to annoy. Can't go below zero, lest I be in the negative with them. Following the fight club path, I half expected that I'd become a champion or something. Didn't expect to become emperor of the universe. Oopsie me, just some inter galactic tomfoolery. Lulz.
So, this is my fourth IF game so Im not particularly savvy when it comes to this genre but I will offer my two cents. I absolutely love scifi games and storise so this made me very quickly fall in love with the world, the descriptions are quick and give you a good idea of what you need to know, the aliens are interesting and plentiful and the simulation of being a cadet and rising through the ranks was fantastically well done. The actual roleplay is easily the strongest part of this interactive fiction, there is a lot of options in who you want your character be and what they concentrate on. There also seems to be quite a bit of replaybility and your choices do matter, at least from my experience, either that or the illusion of it is very good. The plot itself is very solid, you eventually end at your galactic war of course but there is a good build up to it bar a few jarring places where it feels like you skipped a few pages. Sadly it does drop off quite significantly towards the end as everything felt a lot more rushed. Even the unique endings are very brief and the epilogue isnt really one as it essentially just recaps what you did, not what happened after. The drop off affects the characters, your friends, loved ones and companions as well. In the first half of the game, these people felt really quite important and were well fleshed out for the time, however this slowly diminishes untill it essentially dissapears into much interchangeable dialogue or one sentence acknowledgements of their existence and presence. Hell, my spouse happened to leave abruptly towards the end of the game and not only was there essentially no reaction from me or anyone, no special options or choices to account for the relationships, but it wasnt adressed afterwards either as the game simply switched to adressing my formerly better half as a friend and I assume swapped into the general dialogue. The shenanigans with the pronouns are also too plentiful for me to really ignore it choices of, xym, xem and whatnot isnt something I want to hear about everytime a character is introduced unless its an awesome alien and thats its name. The biggest flaw with this IF game is its ambition, it simply tried to do too much in my opinion. It does A LOT of it very well, some of it amazing even but other sides, especially the romances and friendship interaction past the first half gets completely shafted. But overall, this was a very fun experience, I enjoyed the variety of characters it offered and their personalities, Kyle seemed is a very cool idea for a character, but it just doesnt go far enough or deep enough in areas other than what the title promises. You will feel like a space captain (eventually) and the vast variety of options on how to get there, what you do and who you are are very well executed, but ironically enough the plot kind of starts to flounder around the time you do become one and your emotional investement better not be spent on your friends by that time. Maybe that is just me, maybe its different for other characters, but I did feel let down a bit by the end. Still, very much recommended.
Life of A space Force Captain, Hay do you like Star Trek? Then this Choice game is for you. finished it 7 hours according to my Steam time, and its a grate ride though your Career. Lots of world building, alien races, and of course Choices to be made. Start as a child of 12, a bit of back story to go though then rise though the ranks of the Space Force over a long fleshed out career, from a cadet freshly graduated from the academy to the Captains chair. Who and What are you? What kind of career will you have? What will you sacrifice along the way? Will you learn psyonsic abilites or get some blackmarket cybernetics? All of these choices and more await.
if you like interactive fiction this its good but dont expext a masterpiece
Choices matter and life is full of hard choices . This brought me back to so many of the choose your path books . In an era of no internet , computer games or cell phones , it fired the imagination. I enjoyed my first run through , it was fun and I felt the angst of what some of my favorite sci-fi heroes felt in making similar decisions . Try it out , you will be surprised !!!!
Like with a lot of these Choice of Games games, whether you should go for it depends more on if the premise is based on something in which you already have an interest, rather than relying upon the writing to carry a subject you're not into, alone, as you need to be invested to get imagining your character. For what it's worth, though, the narrative style is capable of making a gripping narrative, if I'd perhaps prefer more descriptive text to flesh out the worldbuilding rather than leaning so much on imagination. When it comes to the "gameplay", my one complaint is that I feel like you're put into "choose which of these two hostages you make hate you or die" situations too often, and in situations where my RP leanings would make me take one choice that is "sub-optimal" for how I want to manage who hates me how much. (If the gray-style alien says eating vegan meat substitute is unethical because it still resembles food and the warrior race guy says no animal suffered so how could it be 'unethical', why would I side with the gray except to just suck up to him when their argument is so clearly nonsensical? This is like a strawman parody of a vegan that hates even other vegans for not veganing hard enough.) The references to previous games are just Easter Eggs (the VR game the kids play is set in the same land the author's previous works were set in). I didn't feel like I was missing anything not having played those games, the way a couple other reviews said.
Quite possibly one of the most well written pieces of interactive fiction I've had the joy of playing, and most definitely the best science fiction/space opera examples of the genre. It's not without faults, including a couple of minor coding/syntax errors, but the story is deep and involved, with multiple different paths in each of the chapters even if the overall plotline doesn't massively change. The characters, especially the companion/friend characters, are both well written and believable, and for the most part you'll genuinely care about what happens to them. My only real gripe is the ending - once you've made your choice, the game generally takes you straight to an epilogue that, for the first few screens, will be recounting what happened to you earlier in the game before giving a very brief description of the result of your choices. The endings definitely felt like they would benefit from being fleshed out. Despite that, I definitely recommend Life of a Space Force Captain
nice story with plenty of options and endings
Wow! Probably one of the best, longest, and most in-depth stories in the Choice of Games genre. You take your PC, decide their race, background, etc. and play through their entire life from childhood to Golden Years. Wonderfully re-playable and very different each time. Your choices matter A LOT. Don't pass this up, worth every penny. Thanks to the Author, who has put out a number of great stories like this.
If you like choose your own adventure stories you'll love this game. Some advice is to spec into a few skills unless you want a bad ending.
