Letters and Legends is part word game and part RPG. It has plenty of content and manages to mix up play with different elements keeping your interest.
I had played many hours on a word game called "Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey" in the past and this reminded me of that game so it immediately piqued my interest. They are very similar in structure actually but I would say Letters and Legends probably has enough differences and different modes to distinguish it from the other. Letters and Legends is a word game where you create words from a selection of letters on a grid and try to damage your opponents. Using special tiles, potions, equipping special items, or making longer words causes more damage. Sometimes, you will have a string of enemies to defeat and you take in turns making words whilst trying to remove their hearts (representing health) and keep your hearts plentiful. If you do get damaged you can buy health potions with coins earned from winning rounds and use them whenever, although you only have a maximum of ten potions and they only give you a small health boost, or you can incorporate blue tiles in your word to replenish some health. Other potions include strength potions which multiply the damage caused or defence potions which help limit damage taken. There are also special items you can equip which help you in battle like extra time, or extra health, or more obscure items like consonants giving you extra damage but vowels causing none. There's quite an array of items to use as you get further into the game and you can equip and unequip items depending on the type of battle ahead. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3323910434 There are five huge chapters to play with a boss battle at the end and you have to finish the previous level to move on to the next. A chapter takes an hour or two to complete and each chapter gets more difficult as you progress. There are also unlimited modes where you can fight endlessly until you die and register a high score, and a recent addition called "The Lost Levels" which are a very imaginative and challenging set of ten levels which you can play independently to satisfy those who want a particularly difficult set of rules. There are lots of rule changes as you progress making the game feel fresh. For example, the game throws special tiles on the grid like flaming tiles or poison tiles that if included in your word can cause your opponent or yourself damage; corrupt tiles that can not be used in a word; opponents that force you to use even or odd numbered words; opponents that can only be damaged if you make a word a certain length; and forcing you to only use letters from one row. Then some rounds are timed, or the grid changes size to allow you less letters or larger grids with more letters. The opponents are quite good and will pull out longer words during these large grid battles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3324129686 There are three difficulty levels to use which can be changed in the settings but I found the harder difficulty to be about right but it is a nice option to have. The opponents do come out with some decent words and you will definitely need to utilize potions and make the right decisions on what special item to use to be successful. The enemies are quite funny too because they always have a slur to say to you before the fight or they will crack a very poor pun, in a good way of course. I loved these little gems of fun. It kept it from feeling too serious and with the relaxing music playing in the background the game felt casual and upbeat. There are a few options I would like to see included, like the ability to change tiles during play and the ability to buy a vowel with coins. There is a shuffle button but if you use it the letters on the grid are all replaced and you lose a turn. I would have liked to have a shuffle button that just re-organizes the letters you already have without replacing them. That is a good way of getting inspiration when you can't think of a word. I'd also like to see lots more achievements added because this can drive longevity. I would suggest looking at Letter Quest to get an idea of achievements as they have it nailed.
🍳Conclusion🍳

Letters & Legends is a relaxing and rewarding game designed for people who like making words out of a grid. The variety in game play and different modes should secure longevity and with the amount of content here it will keep you busy for a while. Some of the fights are timed however, which can add a bit of stress and urgency to proceedings, and because the game is designed to flow by level to level, this might be a problem for those who don't enjoy timed levels as they won't be able to progress. The timed levels aren't that frequent though and mostly they aren't to difficult to win. I would recommend this to word lovers as there aren't that many decent word games around and this is certainly one of them.

Thank you for reading my review. In Letters & Legends dominate your rivals with the might of words, watching them crumble before you as you spell out their fate.
Gameplay & Features
Setting options include; Audio controls, Difficulty slider, Show clock (or hide it), Pulse effects on or off and a link to the credits, tutorial and rules. The game does auto-save. In Letters & Legends you make words to battle your enemies and depending on which class you use (Mage, Brute or Rogue) will determine what type of words hold more power. Words with 5 letters or more buff the Mage, if you use all of the letters in a row or column it empowers the Brute and if you use shorter words it enhances the Rogue’s skills. Unique challenges level up your characters and there are over 40 magical items to find to enhance your gameplay such as a stopwatch to to give you extra time to weapons that will add extra damage. Certain tiles in the game will have special powers such as fire, heal, poison, electric, ice, locked tiles and more. Some attacks can inflict status effects (negative or positive) on either you or your enemies. Positive effects such as buffing strength, increasing defense or regen tiles that recover some health every turn. Or negative effects such as lower strength, missing a turn or bleed where you lose health every turn. Your inventory holds special drinks or potions that improve your chances of winning a round. The game is divided up into 5 chapters with a lot of levels within each chapter. Some are special chapters devoted to each specific character, others are story driven and some are extra challenging.
Tips N Tricks
* When you go into your items tab press “Potion Shop” (blue button under the list of potions you own on the right). It will switch over to the item shop and you can buy the item of the day. * For windowed mode just hit alt + window and resize to your desired size. (It won’t give you the option in settings to change display settings. * For all the characters level them up in the first chapter. Each has their own unique level only for them. For the Mage you cannot inflict any damage on the enemy but when you get to your last turn he will self-destruct and you’ll win the round. Just hold out long enough by having a few extra potions in your inventory if you need them.
Shortcomings
I do not have many gripes with this game, it is fun and challenging. I just wish when we scrolled over the enemies card or clicked it, it would tell us their strengths and abilities. It tells you at the start of the round but if you forget there is no way to click on their card to get the stats again.
Overall Experience
Overall this game is fun and has hours of entertainment for the price point. If you like games like Bookworm this one will be right up your alley. It is challenging but starts off easy and ramps up per chapter. Recommended for word game lovers! IndieGems wishes to thank Bow & Arrow Games for providing a free review copy for this game. This gave me massive nostalgia feels and I was delighted to find something like this word puzzle spell-a-thon. The comparisons to Bookworm adventures are inevitable but warranted - this is certainly a knowing tribute and fond homage, with a similar setup and structure to that classic. Battle ever increasingly difficult enemies using your faithful word grid, some power ups and your personal lexicon, for better or worse! But it is so much more than that, it's an improvement in every way. There's a choice of characters to play with differing strengths and weaknesses, a lovely art style, multiple challenge types and a fine bestiary to battle against. While perfect for kids and adult wordsmiths, make no mistake that this game can be fiendish at times and gets difficult towards the end - you will be challenged, but you can always take a step back and replenish your powers so you don't get stuck. It's all very nicely structured and thought through and hugely satisfying when you notice that killer word. Not short either, it will probably take around 10 hours to complete and get all achievements, and another 5-10 to complete every bonus level so you'll be getting great value for money too. I always enjoy games where the thought and effort is apparent, and in this case topped off by a responsive and helpful (single) dev which makes all the difference. The entire game is just making words from a random set, so if that sounds boring to you then stay away but I reckon most everyone who enjoys a word puzzle now and again will be enamoured with this.
You make words to kill stuff That's what you do There's monsters and bosses And undead things too It's a phone game, you see But plays fine on PC It's fun and so cheap It feels almost free See the trailer above That's all I can say To play this fine game You must buy it today
Responsive developer - added an accessibility option based on feedback.
Being a fan of Bookworm Adventures, I really like and enjoy playing this game! Very challenging at times, which is a good thing. Flexibility with purchasing items to help you win levels. I constantly search for word rpg roguelike games such as this one. Word games are my favorite. To the developer, thank you very much for this Bookworm Adventures inspired game and give us more! We definitely need more BWA-like word games. Was previously waiting for the finished version of Writer's Block to be released, Letters & Legends has filled the void! *Besides Bookworm Adventures, I have also compared this game to Orbi's Chronicles, Paperback Adventures, Spellspire, Scroodles, Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey, Syllablade and Word Charmer.
Thoroughly recommend Letters & Legends. An obvious premise with familiar gameplay, but that's part of its charm. The game is simple to pick up, yet there's enough strategy to give it depth and a satisfying challenge as you progress. For just a couple of quid, there's very little to lose and plenty of fun to gain. Definitely worth a buy.
This game is so well thought out and simply amazing. If this is your kind of game, just get it. For the full price I paid, I feel the dev(s) got cheated. The levels are plenty and it gets very challenging very fast. I would love to see a few save files so my nephew could start from scratch. He's 11 years old and this is part of his homework. He's home schooled. You will put MANY hours into this if you want to beat the game. I've just unlocked the 4th world and cannot wait for what's ahead. Thank you for this!~
Super fun word game to play solo. Lots of different challenges. Give this game a try and you wont regret it, worth full price!
