Leisure Suit Larry 5 - Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work

Leisure Suit Larry 5 was part of the free Leisure Suit Larry - Retro Bundle on Fanatical, and as a fan of point-and-click and retro games, I decided to give it a shot. This was my first time playing the series. The bundle includes the VGA remake, not the original version. Also, despite the name, this is actually the fourth game in the series since Leisure Suit Larry 4 doesn't exist. The game starts with a ridiculously long intro. You sit through tons of text and scenes jumping between characters you don't know, and it takes forever before you actually get to control Larry. This basically sets up what you're in for with the whole game, and the pacing never improves. The game comes after Leisure Suit Larry 3, but doesn't continue from where that one left off. You're never told what happened between the games, even though something major clearly went down. Larry and Patti start in completely different places. They don't even meet until the very end. There are also references to the "missing" Leisure Suit Larry 4 throughout, which just confused me. You switch back and forth between these two characters, and each one has their own sections to play through. The story itself isn't bad, but the actual gameplay gets mind-numbingly repetitive. Larry goes to airports that all follow the same pattern. The limousine sections do the same thing for both characters. Larry even jokes about how every airport looks identical, which pretty much sums up the problem. The game does make some improvements though. You get more music tracks, better sound effects, and improved graphics with 256 colors. That's a step up from the previous games. The art style is cartoony with exaggerated features on most characters, though the younger women are drawn more attractively. This new direction didn't bother me. It reminded me of the first game's VGA version, just with better details. This is also the first game in the series to use point-and-click mechanics instead of text commands, which was a nice change. The difficulty is the easiest of the first four games. I never died once. I'm not even sure if you can die in this one. The game mentions a time limit at the beginning, but it never seemed to matter during gameplay. It was probably just part of the dialogue. I decided to play in windowed mode because of the low resolution, but that created its own problems. Moving between screens requires clicking near the edges, and it's so imprecise that I kept accidentally clicking outside the game window. The UI doesn't help either since it's cluttered and not very user-friendly. The long outro was one of the worst parts. Patti goes through everything she did in excruciating detail, as if we hadn't already played through and seen all that stuff. It felt completely pointless. I also have no idea what to think about the weird gynecologist scene. Was it supposed to be "erotic" or was it a parody? I am not going to shame someone's fetishes, but this was clearly written from a male perspective and just came off as uncomfortable and cringy. The humor stays true to the series with plenty of funny scenes, though it's much less explicit than earlier titles. There's no age verification system this time, but you'll still need the poorly scanned manual to find symbol combinations for flight tickets. One good change is the save prompt when you arrive at certain locations for the first time. This is a big improvement over the constant save reminders in the previous game. I think this is the weakest game in the series so far.

after playing larry 1-2-3 and had fun with it I think this one is the worst Leisure suit Larry game so far, too much changing pov but nothing much happened, really boring plot

This review is based only on my short experience. [h2]Who will love it[/h2] Maybe hardcore retro adventure fans or people with nostalgia for the Leisure Suit Larry series may enjoy it. For everyone else, I do not think this is worth playing today. [h2]Replay value[/h2] For me, replay value is none. I tried it once, and I do not want to continue. [h2]Final note[/h2] Leisure Suit Larry 5 may have some value as an old 90s adventure game, but I personally found it too boring to continue. Even with cutscenes, it did not hook me at all. No traps, no deaths. This is perhaps the best Larry game I've played in the series, and the ending is just spectacular. A lot of fun following Larry (and sometimes Patti) along on a journey through four U.S. cities and seeing the shenanigans Larry gets into in each place. Puzzles felt logical, and no item-environment combo felt far fetched. Would recommend for any fan of humorous Point N Click adventures. Sierra had a real gem with this one.

This is one where Larry start looking different then in original games. Art changing and games get more easy to play. Same pervy jokes and fun still so it is good game.
