Well I just want to say that I am very much enjoying this game. I am a very young 70 year old lady who has been playing video games since the days of 'Nintendo', 'Sega', 'Genesis', 'Playstation', etc. I love these types of dungeon crawling games and they are hard to find. I also love the 'single player' aspect because I am not into the 'Multiplayer Games'. To perhaps the younger generation, you may not be as appreciated as those of us who know just how much brain work goes into making one of these games. Keep on making these because there is folks out there that still love these dungeon crawling games. Also if you are ever interested I have a son who would love to join someone like you into making video games. He is in his 40's, not a teenager. Also I own close to a thousand games here on Steam and I am happy to own yours in my library. I am still enjoying this game and I will to the finish. I with you luck in your endeavor to create more video games.
I hate to give a negative review for what might be the developer's first game (at least under their current brand), but while it looks nice and is competently made, I also find it hard to recommend. Or rather, I don't know who I would recommend it to. Because while it does a lot competently, it is also very straightforward to the point where I would almost call it casual. And there lies its biggest problem: I can't imagine a lot of casual gamers being interested in grid-based dungeon crawlers. And there isn't enough complexity or novelty here to keep people who normally play such games interested. On the positive side, I like the graphic style and the wacky premise, the levels are competently designed (there are 10 of them) and everything works - I played the game start to finish (took 7 hours according to Steam) without encountering any bugs or other issues. On the "what is missing" side, however: - The game features a single character which is not a problem on its own but there also isn't any kind of character selection or development. All characters start the same and while they level up, they all level up the same. All the player really gets to choose is whether they will equip a ranged or a melee weapon, what spells they will use and whether they will use armor that offers better protection or lower protection with a mana increase. And these choices don't make a lot of difference in the end. All in all, there isn't much opportunity for role playing or very different playstyles. - The combat system is pretty basic and, since combat is realtime, it also falls into the trap of many other real-time grid-based dungeon crawlers where you can cheese most encounters by attacking and then stepping away from the enemy before they can attack back (or step sideways if the enemy shoots projectiles). Using a turn-based system instead of real-time would certainly help with resolving this. - There are some puzzles but they are really basic and often hinted too strongly. For example,
there is a section of the game where a character needs to step on a pressure plate that opens a door and then get to a door before it closes. There is a plaque that says to "hurry up" next to the pressure plate. And there is also a scroll of haste right next to the pressure plate.
I mean, it's difficult to imagine anyone not getting the hint at that point. - There is not a lot in terms of settings and, most notably, there is only a single save slot. Good luck if you find yourself surrounded by enemies and accidentally press save instead of load (almost happened to me). All in all, I wish the game spent more time in development after being "finished" to add more complexity, specifically a more complex rpg system, more complex and challenging combat, puzzles etc. to appeal to people who regularly play dungeon crawlers.
fun game, haven't even come close to finishing it yet but it's geniunely really fun already
I either have to really dislike a game or really love a game to leave a review before finishing it. Add "Labyrinth: The Wizard's Cat" to the list of games I cherish, and I'm still not done with it. What you have here is what you see in the small video and screen shots, a retro-inspired dungeon crawl, not too dissimilar to a single-person version of Dungeon Master. What really stands out for me in "Labyrinth..." is just how perfectly balanced everything is. The levels have secrets, twists and turns, and traps galore, but none of it feels intentionally unfair the way the classic dungeon crawlers do. You'll die if you aren't careful fighting the assortment of typical dungeon fare (spiders/zombies/slimes/etc) and if you don't watch out for the fire pits/spikes getting in your way. As I've mentioned in other reviews, the thing that instantly ruins a dungeon crawler for me is gimmicky traps (see my Vaporum: Lockdown review for more on this) and through four levels here, I haven't encountered anything like that. Don't come in thinking this is a deep RPG with character customization, romance, or top notch graphics...but if you're looking to scratch the Dungeon Master itch, "Labyrinth..." more than does the trick. It's nice seeing a game that is stripped down and focuses on what makes these games fun...battling a variety of enemies, uncovering secrets, and the satisfaction of completing levels and travelling further down to see what's next. Another thing that I'm thankful for and is almost mandatory for me these days is a decent mapping system. I fully admit I've become all too used to modern conveniences in games, like not having to bust out graph paper to just figure out where I'm going. The automap in "Labyrinth..." does just the trick. Want a more hardcore experience? Don't use it! The game is well worth the $7.99 paid. HIGHLY recommended!
Nice little game, a little bit too easy, would like more mob based attacks not just single monsters, you can just stay at a distance use rage and fire an arrow fast at anything, The magic armour should replenish your magic pool and equipping a full suit of gear should give you an extra bonus to damage, the end monster should be a beast with a lot more attacks and be a bit faster, love the puzzles and traps, I couldn`t find much of a use for the pyramid teleport, may need to be a little bit more devilish with some puzzles, loved the graphics and sound, loved the feel of the environment and the atmosphere, play ability and responsive input on keys is great. Nice game, Thanks for creating it.
I quite enjoyed this game. Don't go in to it expecting another Legend of Grimrock, EOB or DM. This is a lightweight dungeon crawler. Not much depth, but lots of charm. Well worth £5-£6 though. I'd like to see the developer build on this with a more in-depth game, I'd buy it!
Really dumbed down dungeon crawler, no skill trees, no character customization, just walk around and strafe attack enemies. Like theres not even a minimap, just an inventory map that is impossible to read.
A fun game that got me hooked wanting more. It was a bit slow in the start but got more and more enjoyable the longer I played and felt to short once it ended. I don't really see that as something negative though. I see it as well spent hours.
This game makes the right kind of simplifications to the old school dungeon crawler formula. No character builds, but power progression through exploration. Nice pixely graphics. Some puzzles, but nothing too complex. Short and sweet. I would recommend it for fans of the genre.
