Pretty, but I wish there was more of an explanation as to what's going on.
too short.
Bardzo krótka, ale i bardzo ładnie przedstawiona historia z wymagającą miejscami rozgrywką - szczególnie jedno miejsce ;)
Kintsugi is a compact 2D adventure platformer that takes inspiration from the Japanese practice of repairing broken objects with gold, turning the concept into both a gameplay mechanic and a metaphor for healing a damaged world. Developed by Studiohoho and published by IIM Digital School, it is presented as a short student-made experience rather than a large commercial platformer. Its modest scale is immediately apparent, but the game compensates with a distinctive artistic direction, a thoughtful environmental theme, and a clear sense of identity. The adventure centers on Kyō, a young apothecary living in a world suffering from humanity's greed and mistreatment of nature. A mysterious event begins transforming people with gold, and Kyō finds himself affected by the same phenomenon. His transformation also grants him an unusual power that allows him to manipulate gold and use it to restore damaged parts of his surroundings. This creates an interesting contrast between something initially perceived as an affliction and something that may ultimately become a means of restoration. The idea of kintsugi works particularly well within this premise. Instead of pretending that damage never occurred, the game embraces the idea that broken things can be repaired while retaining visible evidence of what happened to them. Gold consequently becomes much more than an attractive visual effect. It represents recovery, change, and the possibility of rebuilding something that has been harmed. Connecting this philosophy to environmental destruction gives the story a meaningful foundation without requiring lengthy exposition. Gameplay is built around traditional side-scrolling movement combined with Kyō's golden abilities. Players travel through different environments, overcome platforming sections, and interact with obstacles using the powers acquired through Kyō's transformation. The platforming is relatively approachable, while light puzzle elements encourage players to consider how gold can affect their surroundings. Restoring parts of the environment also produces visible changes, reinforcing the feeling that progression involves repairing the world rather than merely traveling through it. The game's short duration naturally limits how far these mechanics can develop. There is not enough time for the platforming, puzzles, or restoration powers to evolve into deeply layered systems. Players looking for challenging precision platforming, extensive exploration, elaborate progression, or a lengthy campaign will find the experience extremely limited. In many ways, Kintsugi feels like a polished demonstration of ideas that could support a much larger game. The upside is that it avoids unnecessary padding and remains focused throughout its brief journey. Visual presentation is one of its strongest qualities. The environments combine colorful fantasy scenery with Japanese-inspired imagery and striking golden effects. Restoring damaged areas gives the world additional vibrancy and creates satisfying visual feedback for the player's actions. The contrast between wounded environments and glowing repairs supports the central theme especially well. Its art direction gives the project considerably more personality than its small scope might initially suggest. Music and atmosphere further strengthen the experience. The soundtrack complements both peaceful exploration and more dramatic moments, helping establish an emotional tone without relying heavily on dialogue. Since the adventure is so short, presentation becomes especially important, and the combination of music, scenery, animation, and environmental changes helps make the journey memorable. The game feels more interested in creating a specific mood and communicating an idea than overwhelming the player with mechanics. Kintsugi is also an accessible experience due to its straightforward controls and relatively gentle mechanical demands. It supports controllers and includes Steam achievements for completion-focused players. Its free-to-play availability is particularly appropriate considering the short runtime, allowing players to experience the project without having to evaluate its limited amount of content against a purchase price. Steam Deck compatibility is currently best considered Unverified rather than officially confirmed as Verified or Playable. The game's 2D design and controller support suggest that it may be suitable for handheld play, but the absence of an official Steam Deck compatibility rating means players should not assume completely trouble-free operation. Manual configuration or compatibility adjustments may potentially be required. Ultimately, Kintsugi works best when approached as a short artistic experiment rather than a fully developed platforming adventure. Its strongest achievement is how consistently it connects story, visual design, environmental restoration, and gameplay to the concept of repairing something broken instead of erasing its scars. The mechanics could have benefited enormously from a longer campaign, but the limited runtime does not prevent the central message from coming through clearly. As a student project, it demonstrates imagination and an encouraging level of artistic cohesion. The journey ends before its concepts can reach their full potential, yet that brevity also makes it easy to recommend to players who enjoy atmospheric indie projects and experimental platformers. Kintsugi offers a small but meaningful experience built around restoration, environmental responsibility, and finding beauty in what has been damaged. Rating: 8/10
