Looks like a mobile game.
Nice little strategy game. You build a village to grow an army and expand... they all die and you try again. The simplistic UI is very deceptive, there are quite a few mechanics at play and hard choices to make. It's a real game. It's pretty good and it's pretty cheap. Easily 10 to 20 hours of content. A lot more if you chase achievements or hard difficulty. Re-playability is limited (a positive if you want to play few days and move on with your life). It feels repetitive after the third map (there are five), though in fairness I am still finding new strategies to play, I feel like I'm just starting to understand how things come together. PROTIP: You don't need to win a run in a single go, you can save scum and retry.
Kingdom Ascension is a medieval-themed strategy and management game developed and published by RainRingStudio that centers on the gradual rise of a small settlement into a powerful kingdom. Rather than focusing exclusively on warfare or city construction, the game attempts to combine multiple strategic systems into a single progression-driven experience. Players assume the role of a lord tasked with establishing a thriving domain, gathering resources, researching technologies, recruiting armies, and expanding their influence across a dangerous and ever-changing world. The game's strongest quality is its satisfying sense of growth. Players begin with very limited resources and only the most basic infrastructure. Every building constructed, every upgrade researched, and every new territory acquired contributes to a tangible feeling of advancement. Watching a modest settlement evolve into a prosperous kingdom creates a rewarding long-term progression loop that consistently encourages players to push forward. The journey from survival to dominance is handled effectively, giving even small achievements meaningful value. Resource management serves as the foundation of the experience. Food, construction materials, and other essential supplies must be carefully collected and allocated to ensure steady development. Early decisions can have lasting consequences, forcing players to balance immediate needs with long-term ambitions. Investing too heavily in military growth may weaken economic expansion, while focusing exclusively on production can leave the kingdom vulnerable to external threats. This constant need to prioritize objectives creates a satisfying layer of strategic planning that remains relevant throughout the game. Construction and infrastructure development play an equally important role. Expanding the kingdom requires more than simply gathering resources; players must create an efficient network of buildings that support economic growth, military recruitment, and technological advancement. Each new structure unlocks additional possibilities and contributes to the overall strength of the settlement. The visual transformation of the kingdom over time reinforces the feeling that every decision is helping shape a growing and increasingly powerful realm. Technology research adds depth to the management systems by providing multiple paths toward improvement. Economic upgrades increase productivity and efficiency, while military advancements strengthen troops and unlock new strategic opportunities. The research tree gives players a constant stream of objectives to pursue and ensures that progression never feels stagnant. Deciding which developments deserve immediate attention often becomes a critical factor in determining the success of the kingdom. Military expansion is another major component of gameplay. Players recruit soldiers, organize armies, and prepare defenses against hostile forces while simultaneously seeking opportunities to claim additional territory. Different troop types provide tactical flexibility, encouraging experimentation with army compositions and battlefield strategies. While combat systems remain relatively accessible, they offer enough depth to make military victories feel earned rather than automatic. Exploration introduces an element of adventure that helps distinguish Kingdom Ascension from more static management games. The world map contains ruins, treasures, hostile encounters, and unexplored regions waiting to be discovered. Sending forces into unknown territory creates moments of risk and reward that break up the routine of city management. Successful expeditions often provide valuable resources and new opportunities, encouraging players to venture beyond the safety of their established borders. One of the game's most appealing qualities is how interconnected its systems feel. Economic development fuels research, research improves military performance, military victories unlock new lands, and exploration reveals additional resources that further strengthen the economy. This cycle creates a natural flow that keeps gameplay engaging. Progress in one area directly benefits several others, making every action feel like part of a larger strategy rather than an isolated task. The presentation favors functionality over spectacle. The visuals are straightforward and designed primarily to support the strategic gameplay. Buildings, units, and resources are easy to identify, while menus remain accessible and easy to navigate. Although the graphical presentation lacks the detail and scale of larger-budget strategy games, it succeeds in delivering information clearly and efficiently, which is ultimately more important for this type of experience. The game's biggest weakness is that some mechanics can feel repetitive during longer sessions. Resource gathering, expansion, and combat eventually settle into familiar patterns, and the early game may test the patience of players who prefer immediate action. Certain systems also feel streamlined compared to the deeper mechanics found in major grand-strategy or 4X titles. However, these simplifications also make the game easier to approach for newcomers who might otherwise feel overwhelmed. Kingdom Ascension succeeds because it understands the appeal of building something from nothing. Every upgrade, conquest, and discovery contributes to a constant feeling of forward momentum. The game combines city building, economic management, exploration, research, and military strategy into a cohesive package that remains enjoyable throughout its progression. While it may not offer the complexity of the genre's biggest names, it provides a solid and rewarding kingdom-building experience that is easy to learn and difficult to put down once its progression systems begin to take hold. Rating: 8/10
