The story is just overly stupid and silly it is not funny just stupid and boring as all hell.
Although I still recommend this game because it is very well written, I couldn't continue after a certain point of utter ridiculousness when the concept of the Damsel Guild is first introduced. The constant jokes, gags and general silliness were too much for me. If that is your thing you will love this game.
this story is pretty bad tbh its lack of direction its terrible plot and the decisions you make are so random even if you want to go a certain way you will be forced to do something different at a different point. this is nothing like choice of robots which is superior to this and choice of alexandria is also a good one compared to the rest of the choice novel games i suggest checking those 2 out instead of this
damnit golins!
good story but the story is extremely long and the ending kind of sucks.
I think i just wasted my 2$ on this o_O i like the company tho they've been on my radar since my last year of grade school. it's fun but doesn't offer a lot of replay value. i mean.. i squeezed 5 hours out of it out of sheer will to see if there were more interesting paths, but it got repetitive around the 2nd/3rd time afaik. i think there are better stories in the choice of games arsenal
This was a fun bit of whimsy. I enjoyed it. It's silly but the writing is actually really funny, and the story is pretty entertaining too.
Delightfully written. You will need to play through more than once to grok the mechanics, once you do shaping the story to your aims becomes much easier, especially once you see the author's style of cause and effect. I laugh every time I play. I cried at the death of a monster. Sobbed honestly. Artistically brilliant.
Not sure why this game has so many negative reviews; its a fun and lighthearted cyoa for a steal. Not perfect by any means but I enjoyed the writing, the characters, the choices and the story - and it stands up to be replayed multiple times!
This is one game that I will warmly recommend, despite my initial reservations due to me knowing of it's comedic tone (I don't like comedy most of the time). It's a more lighthearted story than a lot of CoG / Hosted Games works usually are, but still has some heavier subjects here and there, and a surprisingly compelling cast of characters. Of course, it's not without a few cons, but the pros outweight them heavily, in my opinion. PROS: - The story itself: it's well structured and the pacing makes it so it never gets dull. - The characters: they are intentional clichés, sort of stereotypes of often seen fantasy archetypes. But the "parody" here is obviously intended, and their two dimensional premise adds to their actual appeal in how interestingly it's written. Not to mention, the few unexpected aspects are also pretty compelling. As an example, you have the love interest I had picked, your typical "knight in shining armor" - but you learn pretty fast that
he's initially in it only because he wants to become king, and he never actually shies away from saying that out loud, even until the very end - that doesn't prevent the MC from loving him if you want them to, and from said character to clearly also developing true feelings, but the feelings don't make him forget about his goal if it remains attainable.
I think it's a refreshing approach that adds some spice to these archetypes. - A fairytale rythm to the story: it may not seem like much, but it allows a lot of creativity in the writing and naturally induces suspension of disbelief in the players' minds, which makes it so it doesn't seem rushed that so little time goes by in the game when the whole main adventure takes place, for example. - A good balance between stats and roleplay: this is something I always applaud. The game is mostly story oriented, but there are a LOT of skill checks, and they did never impede me from roleplaying my character the way I wanted, as long as I remained coherent with my own choices and decision for his personality. Now, there are some caveats to this, but I'll go over that in the cons. - A cool protagonist: it may not seem as much, but I enjoyed the MC a lot in this game. For me at least, the balance was very good between allowing player agency and making it so the character had an actual personality. CONS: - The comedy (sort of): like I said it before, the tone is more comedic than a lot of other works and it may not be to everyones' tastes. But like I also said, I don't usually like comedy and I adored this story. The humor was somehow very funny and unobtrusive to me. It may not be for everyone though. - Maybe a bit short (sort of, again): it's not a short story by any means! But it was so enjoyable and I got so attached to the characters that I would have wanted for more. - Very short epilogue: this is one of the issues of the fairytale rythm pro. As most "classic fairytale" do, it ends on a "and they lived happily ever after" note, but that means there is virtually no epilogue to see how the MC lived with their chosen parter and so on. - Obtuse stat checks and penalties for "failing" them: this is probably my biggest gripe with the game, and is a byproduct of the good balance I mentionned before, sadly. The author clearly wanted to make it so stats are actually important, and they managed to. And the stat checks are usually pretty easy - if you have two skills on a high level and one middling one, you should get by pretty easily. I had good Enchantment (magic) and Strategy, and middling Grace (useful for sneaking, combat etc). You're also checked on your personality stats, how much of a "damsel" or not you are and your and affinity with some characters at various points. Because of that, consistency in your choices is highly advised (my MC was traditionalist yet people oriented instead of nobility oriented, and very independent in general - also clearly a "badass" not a "person in distress"). As long as you play into your strengths when it comes to your skills and are consistent when the game relies on your character's personality, you should succeed in everything you do. The issue is that while usually it's obvious, there are quite a few instances in which you simply don't know what will be tested because of the similar tones of some of the choice options. And to add insult to injury, you'll get pretty penalized for each "failed check". So I'm assuming it's very easy to put yourself in a sort of failstate if your character is not well liked in the kingdom (related to how "successful" you are in each trial and tribulation of your adventure) and if both of their siblings hate them, or if you distributed your stats too thin or built the wrong stats (seriously, Strategy and Enchantment are the MVPs, at least with my personality archetype). Now, like I said, I had NO issues whatsoever in my playthrough but I have played and tested enough interactive fiction to see how some players may stumble upon frustrating problems. All in all though, despite the small issues, the game is more than worth it's price in my opinion, and I highly recommend giving it a go!
