jade order is a hitman go-like. always happy to play one of these, but this has as many issues as things going for it. there's some fluff serving as 'story', a few screens before the first level and a couple after the last, but replaying the level plays the cutscene every time and it also shows tutorial screens for each retry. would be annoying even if these messages weren't available anytime from the pause menu, but they are. 50 levels divided into 5 packs, everything unlocks one by one. it's basically killing enough enemies from behind or the sides to light a beacon, then leaving the level through it. undo works from a fail state, which is always excellent news, though you have to wait for the death animation to finish and it can't be held to take back multiple steps. no level reset hotkey/icon is not great either, have to go to the pause menu to retry. no need to kill everything, but there are optional collectibles and a similarly optional move limit, which can be exceeded but the counter stops at 99 even though you can keep playing. completion, loot and the move limit make up the rating system for each level, and much like in hitman go, they can be completed during individual attempts. mostly because they cancel each other out anyway, obeying the move limit isn't possible if you also want to grab the coin. basic completion is not that hard for the most part, there were only a few levels in the second half that took a while. coins I gave up on after 30-odd levels and didn't bother with the move limit after the first pack, partly due to the controls (see below). the usual variety of stationary and mobile enemies, worth noting that gaps don't stop them from killing you if they can do so by stepping next to them. a neat thing is enemies bumping into each other bounce back and if you're sandwiched between them, you come out unscathed. besides moving around, there are a few blessings/abilities to use, mostly unlocked with new level packs. pick up green macguffins (or kill enemies carrying them) and use them to single out a nearby foe to move while everybody else stays put (i.e. skip a turn), or teleport to an adjacent tile (there are also regular portals that don't use resources). paralyzing enemies is also an option, they can be anywhere on the level and attacked from any direction while stunned. and the last one simply lets you kill anybody anywhere but uses two greenies. both keyboard and mouse work for controls, no rebinds or alternatives and controls don't feel great. while I'd expect to play something like this with keys, it's not advised here. you see, arrows only move the cursor, not the character, then have to press space to move there. why? simply clicking a valid tile actually moves the guy, much better. except the delay between arriving on a tile and movement options appearing is noticable enough to be annoying, going for all medals is a lot more tedious like this. what's worse, no direct hotkeys for blessings. a simple 1-2-3-4 would work just fine, but have to press shift, then click one or mess around further with arrows and space. the game looks and sounds great, though there's very little difference between the locations and sometimes scenery blocks important stuff (e.g. a spark on the bottom of level 4-1), but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the (lack of) settings are horrible. a couple of languages are available but no exit button, only alt+f4 works in full screen, and the autosave message says 'don't turn off the console', so instead of a lazy mobile port we got a lazy console port. so much better... there are resolution options and windowed mode, but they all have to be cycled through one by one and resolution changes instantly. the game first starts in a window and instead of choosing a resolution from a list and clicking a full screen toggle or pressing alt+tab, I had to go through a million resolution options until I found my native one in full screen. but wait, there's more. the audio setting (singular) is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke: 'enable or disable all sounds and music', on/off. thanks... level numbers are only on the pause screen and settings aren't available while playing a level, of course. progress is lazily stored in the registry. yet again a developer with excellent pixel art skills and a good concept (lifted from another game), there's even a demo and the price wouldn't be too bad either, but until some basic functionality gets patched in, it's not something to recommend. contacted the dev a couple weeks ago with some general feedback, so they had plenty of time to add a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ exit button and whatnot. alas...
Good game. If you liked Squenix's GO games - this is exactly like them, with a few original ideas. Difficulty is fine. Not too big, but so is the price.
Очередное пополнение игр с механикой GO (Hitman Go, Lara Croft Go, Deus Ex Go и несколько других.)
The gameplay is straightforward: to advance to the next stage, you must navigate your hero across the grid and eliminate enough enemies to light up the beacon. The trick is that enemies move with your every step and you can attack them only from their rear or sides. The number of enemies that need to be destroyed is shown in the upper left corner. The only thing you need to worry about are new enemies with different attack patterns. While there are several unexpected surprises along the path, enemies usually just stand on the spot or move around. In case you make a mistake or die, you can press the "undo" button as many times as you want without any penalty. You are quickly introduced to the unique mechanic of blessings. You get these unique abilities as you advance through the game. There are four of them and they help you affect the movement of the enemy. For instance, the first one enables you to make one enemy in your immediate vicinity move while everyone else remains still. These abilities cannot be used at will, though. You must first gather a tear that can be found on the playing field, most often on the opposite site, or carried by an enemy. Stages aren't challenging; virtually anyone can figure out a puzzle by moving around and watching how the enemies move. It gets trickier if you want to beat everything. As you choose which power to use or when to rely on a special technique that allows you to survive when two enemies collide on the same spot, your strategic abilities will be put to the test. Moving could have been done better. Since you can only move in four directions, using a keyboard should allow you to move more quickly. But first you have to go through the extra step of selecting a node and confirming the movement. Playing with a mouse is therefore considerably more enjoyable because you can simply click on the node without taking that additional step. Each of the five provinces has ten stages. While the pixel art is very well done and not just a static image, the grid textures stay the same throughout the game. Provinces are separated from each other by a distinctive background and a few fresh elements, such as trees and ruins, but I would’ve wished for an additional playing field. A stage invites multiple replays due to the three medals that can be obtained. The first one is given simply for completing a puzzle, while the other two are tied to completing the task with the fewest moves possible and grabbing the gold coin. You can never earn all three in one try. In conclusion, Jade Order is a fun puzzle game with nice art that costs less than five euros. Everything in this game works except for the quit/exit game button that's mysteriously missing from the main menu.
A good puzzle in the vein of hitman/ tomb raider/ deus ex go with solid pixel art and music to much. The puzzle difficulty curve feels fair and well implemented undo mechanics smooths the gameplay further. Aesthetically coherent, it offers a fun experience for fans of things mentioned above, especially as it's very reasonably priced. The intro story could've been better spaced by sprinkling the slides between intro area levels, but it's workable. I'm looking forward to either As for the purely technical issues issues that should be addressed: - no exit button on menu screen, requires to alt+f4. - tutorials replay every time you start the relevant section. They can be skipped fast but it's still a bit detracting from experience since getting all medals requires at least one replay. - no way to play with controller. It might be that the game somehow doesn't see mine, but there is no way to switch controls in settings either.
Cannot believe this doesn't have more reviews. I like pretty much everything about this game: the music, the art, the puzzles, and the optional objectives. None of the levels feel samey and all of the abilities are really cool. My only minor complaint is that moving the character is a bit clunky, having a slightly too long "cooldown" to walk smoothly across the field. Still, I think it's a shame this game didn't get any more attention.
So far I am quite happy with the game. It's very polished, much better than I expected for the price. I especially like the pixel art, the colors chosen and the sounds. I just miss the option to disable music only, not all audio altogether. The sound effects are cool, and I'd like to listen to my music while playing.
