Yes.
"Item Tower" was quite a train wreck. The game, now thankfully removed from Steam, was at face value a weak Tetris ripoff designed for the Nintendo Switch. The game had basically no players at last, then, suddenly, In the last 2 weeks of June 2024, the player counts spiked to over 10,000 concurrent players... huge success. Then the players evaporated overnight. What happened? Well, from what I can piece together, the developers decided to "flip" the game... they shoved an NFT-like selection of "rare drops" into the game and pushed them on the Steam Marketplace (using that as a substitute for the blockchain behind most modern NFT scam games... but make no mistake, just because the back end is different, the scam is the same). That "banana" like item rarity (which of course the devs used to get rich quick after farming up their own items first to sell) caused the player spike. So, basically, this was a scam. If you try to take it seriously as a game, you'd be disappointed even if it wasn't a scam. Visually, this has some fairly mediocre/dated looking graphics that will understandably be a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. This is only superficially free. The real purpose for this game is for the developer to farm and exploit Steam Inventory items that drop through the game. They can then sell these items in bulk on the Steam Community Marketplace. This kind of Steam abuse, combined with a minimum-viable-product non-game, does no service to gamers whatsoever. This is pollution... it's harmful to everyone. It hurts genuine indie devs, who have to compete with this pollution to get visibility for their sincerely made games. It makes indie devs look bad. It makes it harder for gamers to find those genuinely made games. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
