Island Explorer is a short, relaxing VR experience with no quests, tasks, or enemies to disturb you. Nothing but you and nature... with some tunes. Keep calm, stay relaxed and take a zipline or drive around a beautiful Island.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality
You can view my gameplay & initial impressions review here: https://youtu.be/S5SBPELVrLA So I really love this game. It's honestly my dream VR game concept: drive a vehicle in VR in a beautiful landscape. Casual simulation driving for VR. You can also do more than just drive a jeep. However, it needs polish. So yeah it's not perfect, not by a long shot. Steering can be very tricky. You will easily careen off the roadway, especially if you try to drive fast. I found that driving with only one hand on the steering wheel is the best way to control the jeep through those curved roads. However, you can do everything with your motion controls. You can move the windshield wipers or flip the windshield over if you want a clear view of the road. You set the parking brake manually. You even change gears from 1 to 3 or reverse. The only buttons you push are the gas and the brakes. You even get to honk your horns with the motion controllers movements. You can also get on a plane and view the island from above. The plane is on auto-pilot so it's only sight-seeing. It's still a pretty cool ride. I tried moving the controls on the plane, but they had no effect. There's also zipline rides you can get on. There is full locomotion and snap turning. There are instructions for getting to the menu by double tapping, however, I couldn't do it on the Oculus Rift or WMR, no matter what I pressed or double-pressed. There is a vignette on by default that is annoying. It goes on and off for apparently no reason when climbing stairs or going down the zipline. Unfortunately, there's lots of pathing issues and I got stuck on several places. If your jeep is nearby you can teleport towards it if you get totally stuck, but otherwise you are SOL and have to quit and restart. You can also totally clip through some objects, including the jeep. Then there's invisible walls or barriers in some locations. The collision physics is just off for most of this game. There is a day and night cycle as well. Even though the game doesn't have the highest quality textures, it does look pretty. On my 1060 GTX, the game did run at about 45 fps. Despite all the above issues, I still really like this game. I think it's a must download, as long as you are okay with dealing with some of those bugs. It's going to be on my top 100 list of FREE Steam VR games. I would pay for a more polished experience though. Rate 7/10. This could be one of the best games in VR with just a smoother & more polished experience. p.s. A relaxing sandbox and one of the few games with full VR driving controls out there right now. To drive you need to use VR controllers to move the wheel, push buttons and using the stick. Might not be the most polished but definitely worth a try.
The Type of Casual VR Experience that I Really Enjoy
It's a nicely-crafted environment with an adjustable day/night cycle. You can walk around the island, using free motion or teleport, or you can drive the car. The car steering can be a little finicky, but it's generally accurate and responsive enough for a leisurely drive and taking in the sights. You can also fly over the island in a plane. This part is an on-rails experience, so you don't actually control the plane. There are a couple of zip lines on the island. The zip line towers are nice spots for a view of the sunrise/sunset. If you like the kind of VR experience in which the only objective is to relax and enjoy the surroundings, then you'll probably enjoy this.
great, just driving around, and take it easy.or take the zip liner or...airplane.nice game for free.
Not really a gamegame as in, you dont do anything but explore, you can grab a ride on a place or drive a jeep, the driving is not that complicated but it could use some polish. As the description says, its an exploration game with a relaxing environment, where time passes leisurely and calmly, lots of place to check out, but ultimately not much to do other than watch, as there are no quests weapons, tasks, or enemies.. I get the positive review because its free and its pretty polished, and if you are looking for a relaxing look around game, this is a great choice.
Wow, I have not been disoriented by VR in a long time but drive off the road a little and the perspective gets all messed up. Hard to get control over the vehicle too... I would not recommend as a first time VR experience. Experienced users should read up on the controls and just close their eyes if they drive off the road (until the visual stabilize).
